1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo change Night light strength in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Night light and move the Strength slider. Moving it toward the warm end increases the blue-light reduction, which makes the screen look more orange. Moving it toward the cool end reduces the effect. Microsoft describes the slider as controlling the intensity of blue-light reduction, and it does not publish a numeric scale or a recommended position, so the right setting is the one that looks comfortable to you.
Change the Strength slider step by step
- Open Settings from the Start menu, or press Windows key + I.
- Select System, then select Display.
- Select Night light to open its settings page. If Night light is off, turn on its toggle first; the Strength slider is only adjustable while the feature is active.
- Drag the Strength slider. Each change applies to the screen immediately, so you can judge the result while you move it.
There is no universal correct position. Judge the setting by how text and photos look during the work you actually do, such as reading documents in the evening or editing images. If colors look wrong in a color-sensitive task, lower the strength or turn Night light off for that session.

Turn Night light on, off, or on a schedule
You can control the feature in two places:
- Display settings: use the Night light toggle on the Night light page described above.
- Quick Settings: open the Quick Settings panel from the Network or Speakers icons in the taskbar and select the Night light tile.
To run Night light automatically, go to the Night light settings page and turn on Schedule night light. Then choose one of two options:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Sunset to sunrise: Windows turns the effect on at sunset and off at sunrise, based on your location.
- Set hours: enter a custom start time and end time. Use this if you want the effect at fixed hours regardless of season.
The schedule and the Strength slider work together. A schedule decides when the effect runs; the slider decides how strong it is while it runs. Changing the slider does not change the schedule.

Troubleshooting when Night light will not change
The toggle is grayed out
Microsoft states that Night light is not supported with certain display drivers, including DisplayLink and Basic Display drivers. If the toggle is unavailable, check which driver your display uses. Where the toggle is grayed out, Microsoft says the display driver may need updating. Install the latest driver from your graphics adapter or PC manufacturer, restart, and check the Night light page again. If the toggle stays unavailable on a DisplayLink dock or a Basic Display driver, Night light cannot be used with that display setup.
The screen looks red or oversaturated on an HDR display
On HDR-capable devices, Microsoft says the appearance of Night light depends on the strength setting. A high strength can make the image look red-tinted or oversaturated. Lower the Strength slider until the colors look normal, or turn Night light off if the HDR image still looks wrong.

The screen is too dim, rather than too warm
Night light changes color temperature, not brightness. If the display itself is too dark, adjust the brightness control in Settings > System > Display, or use the monitor’s own on-screen menu for an external monitor. Changing the Night light Strength slider will not fix a brightness problem.

Health claims about blue light
Microsoft’s Windows display support article says warmer colors are easier on the eyes and that blue light may keep people awake at night. These are Microsoft’s statements; they are not independently verified here. Treat Night light as a comfort setting you can adjust, rather than a medical measure.

Summary of key settings
- Strength location: Settings > System > Display > Night light.
- Strength controls the intensity of blue-light reduction, and has no numeric scale in Microsoft’s documentation.
- Scheduling offers Sunset to sunrise or Set hours.
- A grayed-out toggle can point to an unsupported driver such as DisplayLink or Basic Display, or to a driver that needs an update.
- On HDR displays, lower the strength if colors look red-tinted or oversaturated.
Night light can be adjusted from Settings or Quick Settings, and changing its strength only changes the warmth of the display, not its brightness.
