Start with the game’s Steam language setting, then check the title’s own Options or Settings menu. Steam can switch the files a game uses, but many PC games keep interface, subtitle, and voice choices in separate in-game controls. Controller mappings are usually under Controls, Controller, or Button Mapping; if a mapping will not save, remove any duplicate assignment and try again.
Use this order to find every setting
There is no universal “make this game English” switch. A Chinese PC game may obtain language files from Steam, expose a language selector on its title screen, or provide only the languages that were built into that particular release. Subtitle text and spoken dialogue may be independent, and controller support may be full, partial, or limited to gamepad-only options.

| What you want to change | First place to look | What the change affects | Could a download be required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole game language on Steam | Steam Library > right-click the game > Properties > Language | Language files supplied by the Steam edition; the exact scope depends on the game | Yes. Steam says files for the selected language may need to download before you play. |
| Language inside the game | Title screen > Options, Settings, or Language | Whatever channels that title exposes, which can include interface text | Usually uses files already installed, but the title may require a restart or additional files. |
| Subtitles or captions | Audio, Accessibility, Subtitles, Captions, or Messages | On-screen dialogue and message text, separately from spoken voices when the game supports that split | Only if the selected subtitle language is an optional language pack. |
| Voice language | Audio or Language settings | Spoken dialogue; some games keep this separate from interface and subtitle text | Depends on the title and its installed language files. |
| Controller layout | Controls, Controller, or Button Mapping | Which physical buttons perform each in-game action | No language download; support can still be partial or gamepad-only. |
Changing the Steam client’s own interface does not necessarily change a third-party game. Steam documents the client path as Steam > Settings/Preferences > Interface, while individual games can use their own language controls.
Check which languages the game actually supports
Before troubleshooting a missing English option, verify that the specific game and edition include English text or audio. Steam warns that some languages are unavailable for particular games. Open the game’s Steam store language table or the publisher’s FAQ and distinguish between interface, full audio, and subtitle support if those categories are shown.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Do not treat “Chinese” as one option
A title can list Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese as separate choices. The official A Summer’s End: Hong Kong 1986 PC manual, version 1.2.1, lists English, Cantonese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese separately. Selecting one Chinese variant does not imply that the other is present, and neither listing proves that Chinese voices and Chinese text are bundled in the same way.
Check the installed edition and version
- Compare the Steam language table with the edition you own, rather than relying on a video or guide for a different platform.
- Read the publisher FAQ when Steam’s listing is unclear; a game can expose a language in its own menu even when the wording differs from Steam’s table.
- Note the game version when consulting a manual. Language lists can change between releases, as the version number on the A Summer’s End manual illustrates.
If English is absent from both the game’s supported-language information and its menus, changing Windows or Steam’s client language will not create an English translation.
Change a Steam game’s language
For a game installed through Steam, use the per-game setting first. This is separate from the language of the Steam application.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game’s name and choose Properties.
- Open the Language tab.
- Select English, another supported language, or the Chinese variant you want.
- Close the Properties window and wait for Steam to apply the change.
- If Steam starts a download, let it finish before launching. Steam’s support guidance says language files may need to be downloaded before you can play.
- Launch the game and check its title screen. If the interface remains unchanged, continue with the in-game procedure below.
What to do when the Language tab has no English option
A missing option normally means the Steam edition does not advertise that language. Check the game’s language table and publisher FAQ before trying unrelated system settings. Steam explicitly notes that some languages may not be available for a game, so an empty or limited list is a support limitation rather than a controller or display problem.

When Steam changes files but the game still opens in Chinese
- Open the game’s own title-screen Options, Settings, or Language menu and select English there.
- Exit and relaunch if the game does not apply a language change immediately.
- Confirm that the Steam download completed. A partially downloaded language pack cannot be expected to provide the selected text.
- Check whether you changed the game’s per-title setting, not only Steam > Settings/Preferences > Interface.
Use the game’s own language menu
Many games apply language from their title screen rather than from Steam. Open the first menu shown before loading a save and look for Options, Settings, or a menu explicitly labeled Language.
- Start the game and remain at the title screen.
- Open Options or Settings.
- Select Language.
- Choose the supported interface language.
- Confirm the change using the on-screen command, then return to the title screen or restart if requested.
Example: a title-screen language control
Capcom’s Steam FAQ for Dragon’s Dogma 2 documents the path as the title-screen Options > Language menu. That is a useful pattern for other games, but it is not evidence that every Chinese PC game uses the same labels.
Example: changing language after you have started playing
Some games keep the same control in the pause menu. Capcom documents Dragon’s Dogma 2 as Pause > System > Options > Language during play. If you cannot find a language setting at the title screen, pause the game and inspect a System or Options submenu.

Why a game can ignore Steam’s selection
Third-party games may read Steam’s setting only at launch, may require their own selection, or may offer a narrower set of supported languages. The Steam client’s interface language and a game’s language are independent controls; changing one does not guarantee a change in the other.

Set English subtitles while keeping Chinese voices
Look for separate controls rather than assuming one language selector controls every channel. Subtitle options may be called Subtitles, Captions, or Messages, and they are commonly placed under Audio or Accessibility.
- Open the game’s Options or Settings menu.
- Enter Audio, Accessibility, or a similarly named section.
- Find Subtitles, Captions, or Messages.
- Turn subtitles on, then choose English if a subtitle-language selector is provided.
- Find a separate Voice, Voice Language, or spoken-language control and leave it set to Chinese when that option exists.
- Apply the settings and test a dialogue scene so you can confirm both the spoken and written languages.
When mixed-language output is possible
English text with Chinese or Japanese voices is possible only when the game exposes those channels independently and includes both language resources. The official Van Helsing PC manual distinguishes VOICE, MESSAGES (subtitles), and INTERFACE, and includes a subtitle on/off setting. That layout demonstrates the kind of separation to look for; it does not guarantee that every title offers an English subtitle selector or Chinese voice pack.
When the game offers only one combined language choice
If the menu has one language setting and no separate voice or subtitle controls, you may not be able to mix Chinese audio with English text. Check the game’s language table for separate audio and text support. A title that lists English interface text but no English audio can still provide English menus and subtitles with Chinese voices, but the exact combination must be exposed by the game.
Subtitles are not the same as interface text
A game can translate menus while leaving dialogue messages in another language, or offer translated subtitles without translating every interface label. Test a menu, a spoken line, and an on-screen message separately after changing the settings.

Configure a controller and save button mappings
Connect the controller before launching the game when possible, then open Controls, Controller, or Button Mapping. Some manuals mark individual options as gamepad-only, while publisher documentation can describe PC controller support as partial rather than complete.
- Connect the controller and confirm that the operating system recognizes it.
- Launch the game and open Options or Settings.
- Enter Controls, Controller, or Button Mapping.
- Select the action you want to change, such as movement, confirm, cancel, or camera control.
- Press the physical button you want to assign.
- Save or apply the layout, then test it in a menu and during gameplay.
Fix a mapping that will not save
Capcom warns that duplicate controls can prevent a mapping from being saved. If the game rejects your layout, inspect the list for an action that already uses the button you are assigning.
- Return to Button Mapping and identify the button that fails to save.
- Find every action currently assigned to that button.
- Remove the conflicting assignment or move it to another button.
- Assign the desired action again.
- Save the layout and test the result.
A conflict can be intentional in some games, so do not remove an assignment unless you understand which action will lose that button. If the game provides a reset-to-default command, use it as a recovery option and then make one change at a time.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Understand partial and gamepad-only support
“Controller support” does not always mean that every menu, action, or button can be customized. A title may support a gamepad for gameplay but leave some settings accessible only with a keyboard and mouse. Manuals can also identify particular options as gamepad-only. If a control is missing from the mapping screen, check the game’s manual or publisher FAQ instead of assuming the controller is defective.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
The game remains in Chinese after selecting English
- Verify that English appears in the game’s supported-language information.
- Set the language in Steam Library > Properties > Language and allow any files to finish downloading.
- Check the title-screen Options or Settings > Language menu.
- Restart the game so it can reload language files.
- Confirm that the setting was applied to the correct Steam game installation or edition.
Menus are English but dialogue text is not
- Open Audio, Accessibility, or Messages and look for a separate subtitle-language option.
- Turn subtitles on; an interface-language change does not necessarily enable captions.
- Check whether the title supports English subtitles independently of English voice audio.
English subtitles are available, but Chinese voices disappeared
- Return to the voice or audio-language control and select Chinese if it is listed separately.
- Do not assume that the subtitle selector controls spoken dialogue; the Van Helsing manual’s separate VOICE and MESSAGES controls show why these can be independent.
- If no voice selector exists, the game may tie voices to the primary language choice.
The controller works in gameplay but not in menus
- Check whether the game documents only partial controller support.
- Look for settings marked gamepad-only and use the keyboard or mouse for options the game does not expose to the controller.
- Open the controller menu after connecting the device and confirm that the game is displaying a gamepad layout rather than keyboard prompts.
The game refuses to save a custom layout
- Look for duplicate button assignments and remove the conflict.
- Save after each small change to identify the assignment that triggers the failure.
- Restore the default layout if necessary, then reassign controls without reusing a button for conflicting actions.
A practical decision path
Use the following sequence whenever you install a Chinese PC game and want English text, Chinese audio, subtitles, and a controller:
- Confirm support: read the Steam language table or publisher FAQ, noting separate Chinese variants and whether English applies to text, audio, or both.
- Set the per-game Steam language: Library > right-click the game > Properties > Language; wait for any language-file download.
- Check the title screen: open Options or Settings, then Language. If the game documents a pause-menu path, use that while playing.
- Separate the channels: in Audio or Accessibility, configure subtitles or messages independently from voice and interface settings.
- Configure the controller: use Controls, Controller, or Button Mapping; save and test in both menus and gameplay.
- Resolve conflicts: if saving fails, remove duplicate button assignments and try again.
- Record what worked: note the game version and the exact menu path. This makes it easier to restore the setup after an update or reinstall.
What the documentation tells you—and what it cannot promise
Steam’s language guidance establishes two important limits: language files may need to download, and some languages may not be available for a particular game. Capcom’s support pages show that a game can place language controls in the title-screen Options menu or, in Dragon’s Dogma 2, under Pause > System > Options > Language. The manuals for Van Helsing and A Summer’s End: Hong Kong 1986 demonstrate why subtitle, voice, interface, and Chinese-variant choices must be checked at the title level rather than inferred from the word “Chinese.”
Those examples are navigation patterns, not a universal control scheme. The supported-language table, the game’s own menus, and its controller documentation are the final authority for the release you have installed.
