Set the outgoing video dimensions in FFmpeg with its -vf video filter—for example, -vf "scale=1280:720" for 720p. YouTube normally detects the resolution and frame rate it receives; changing a YouTube setting alone does not resize FFmpeg’s encoded output. The VPS must also keep up with the chosen encode and deliver its bitrate reliably.
Set the output resolution in FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -vf option applies a video filter to the output video path. A scale filter changes the dimensions before encoding. For 720p, use -vf "scale=1280:720"; for 1080p, use -vf "scale=1920:1080". These examples assume a 16:9 output canvas. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for option details.

Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Adjust the mapping, filter, frame rate, bitrate, encoder and audio options for the actual source and YouTube’s current recommendations.

Preserve the source aspect ratio
A fixed width and height can distort video if the input has a different aspect ratio. To target 720 pixels high while retaining the source ratio, use -vf "scale=-2:720". The -2 asks FFmpeg to calculate a proportional width rounded to a value suitable for common encoders. If delivery requires a fixed canvas, scale proportionally and add padding rather than stretching the image. Check the input’s actual dimensions and aspect ratio first.
Make sure the filter applies to the intended stream
When a file contains multiple video or audio streams, use explicit stream mapping as needed, such as -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? to select the first video and optional first audio stream. Put the filter on the output video path. Inspect FFmpeg’s startup and progress output to verify the selected stream and resulting dimensions; option placement and filter behavior should be checked against the FFmpeg build installed on the VPS.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically. Its Live Control Room also supports manual resolution settings for a custom stream key; the YouTube Live Streaming API describes automatic detection with the variable option. In the usual FFmpeg workflow, set the dimensions in FFmpeg, then check what YouTube receives. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance if you use manual settings or need to confirm current ingest requirements.
Choose a bitrate for the resolution and frame rate
The following H.264 recommendations are YouTube’s published live ingest bitrates, checked on October 3, 2026. They are starting points for the incoming stream, not guarantees of image quality, encoder performance or viewer playback resolution.

Use the recommendation for the combination you actually send; resolution and frame rate both matter. YouTube lists constant-bitrate encoding for RTMP/RTMPS. The sample’s 4.5 Mbps video bitrate is not suitable for every output in the table and should not be treated as a general prescription. Leave outbound capacity above the combined video and audio bitrate so ordinary variation does not consume all available headroom.
Set frame rate and keyframes consistently
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 frames per second, a 60-frame GOP (-g 60) gives a two-second interval; for 60 fps, a 120-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds. Keep the keyframe interval consistent with the selected frame rate, and check YouTube’s current guidance before changing encoder behavior. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps for RTMP/RTMPS.

Choose codec, audio and other encoder options
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. H.264 with AAC is a common baseline for a command like the example, but confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the encoder you select. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its advanced guidance also covers progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame and Rec. 709 for SDR; these options should be matched to the source and encoder rather than copied blindly.

Scaling and software encoding consume CPU. Higher resolution and frame rate can increase the work, and a higher-quality encode generally needs more bitrate. A VPS’s advertised network bandwidth does not establish how many frames it can encode in real time. No cited OVHcloud specification guarantees that a particular VPS tier can encode a particular resolution and frame rate.

These allocations help you compare plans, but they do not predict FFmpeg performance for your input, filter chain and encoder settings. OVHcloud says its Control Panel can monitor CPU, RAM and network status. Assess actual use during a representative test rather than assuming the full advertised bandwidth is continuously available to your process.
If software encoding cannot keep pace, reduce resolution, frame rate or encoding complexity, or assess hardware acceleration. OVHcloud separately offers Cloud GPU instances and says its L4 GPU offering supports hardware H.264, HEVC and AV1 encoding and decoding. Availability depends on region and current service details; a GPU is not required just to apply FFmpeg’s scale filter. See OVHcloud’s Cloud GPU information and its GPU deployment guide.
Test the stream before relying on it
- Check the source. Confirm the input file, video dimensions, frame rate, aspect ratio and audio track. Decide whether to preserve the aspect ratio or use a fixed canvas with padding.
- Run FFmpeg with the intended output settings. Use the target scale filter, codec, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval. Confirm in FFmpeg’s output that the intended video stream is being processed at the dimensions you expect.
- Verify YouTube’s received stream. Start a private or unlisted test as appropriate for your channel, inspect the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages, and check whether YouTube detects the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test with audio and motion similar to the real stream, and make sure the connection has headroom beyond the combined audio and video rates.
- Watch the VPS while it runs. Observe CPU, RAM and network use during a representative encode. If FFmpeg falls behind, lower the workload or evaluate a supported hardware encoder before the real broadcast.
Troubleshoot resolution and stream-health problems
- YouTube shows a different resolution than expected: Inspect FFmpeg’s output dimensions and confirm the scale filter is applied to the selected video stream. Check YouTube’s detection and, if your workflow requires it, the custom stream key’s manual resolution setting.
- The picture looks stretched: The chosen width and height may not match the source ratio. Use a proportional scale expression such as
scale=-2:720; add padding if a fixed canvas is required. - YouTube reports bitrate or ingest warnings: Recheck codec, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current table for the selected output. Also check that the outbound connection can sustain the combined audio and video rates.
- FFmpeg cannot keep up or frames are delayed: Check CPU load and network use on the actual VPS. Reduce resolution, frame rate or encoding complexity, or assess hardware encoding if supported; the plan’s bandwidth figure alone does not show whether its CPU can encode your workload.
- The test works but a longer broadcast becomes unstable: Repeat the test for a representative duration with similar motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the event. A short idle test does not establish sustained performance.
