How to Restart an Ended YouTube Live Broadcast From an Automated Playout Service

If YouTube has ended your live broadcast, treat recovery as setting up a new or scheduled stream—not as simply reconnecting to the ended event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream, confirm its stream URL and key, start the automated playout service’s output, and check the incoming preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow includes clicking Go live once the preview is ready. The exact restart controls in the playout service depend on that service.

First, confirm that YouTube ended the broadcast

“Ended” can describe different states: the playout service may have stopped sending its feed, or the YouTube event itself may have been ended. YouTube’s encoder guidance says stopping the content feed ends an encoder stream; its scheduled-stream instructions also tell creators to click End Stream and stop sending content. If YouTube has ended the event, don’t assume that restarting output will reopen the same live session. Set up a new stream or schedule one, then verify its preview and status.

YouTube’s public instructions cover its own stream and encoder workflow. They do not specify which button, retry policy, or job state applies inside an unnamed automated playout service. For those service-specific actions, consult that vendor’s documentation or support.

Restart the broadcast with a new or scheduled stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a new stream or schedule one. If the previous event’s details are still appropriate, YouTube offers Reuse settings; check the copied settings rather than assuming they match your intended workflow.
  2. Confirm the connection details. Get the stream URL and stream key expected by the new stream. The key is the credential the encoder uses to send its feed. If the playout service has an old or incorrect key, update it there. YouTube’s instructions also describe checking the RTMPS URL and encoder support when troubleshooting RTMPS connection problems.
  3. Start output in the automated playout service. Use that service’s documented control to start the job or output. The exact control and any retry steps vary by vendor. Watch Live Control Room for the incoming preview.
  4. Complete the YouTube start step for your workflow. With auto-start enabled, starting the encoder can start streaming. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow says to wait for the preview and click Go live when it is ready. These are distinct paths; don’t assume the scheduled-stream approval step is unnecessary.
  5. Verify the live event. Confirm that YouTube shows the broadcast as live and that its watch page is accessible. YouTube advises monitoring the stream and stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube.

Choose the right start behavior

Workflow What starts the broadcast What to verify
Encoder auto-start When auto-start is enabled, starting output from the encoder can start streaming. Check the auto-start setting and confirm the incoming preview and live status.
Scheduled stream Start the encoder feed, wait for the preview, then click Go live when it is ready. Confirm the correct scheduled event is selected and the preview is present before going live.

YouTube says its auto-start and auto-stop settings let creators start or stop streaming from the encoder. Reusing stream settings also copies those selections, so review them when creating the next event. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and its encoder setup instructions.

Troubleshoot when the new stream will not connect

  • No incoming preview: Confirm that the playout service is actually sending output, and compare its stream URL and key with the details shown in Live Control Room.
  • Encoder startup or key error: Check the key in Live Control Room and paste the correct key into the encoder or playout service. YouTube gives this as a troubleshooting step for third-party encoder startup errors: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
  • RTMPS connection error: Verify that the RTMPS URL is correct and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS; see its RTMPS guidance.
  • Feed is present, but the event is not live: Check whether the event is scheduled and waiting for a manual Go live action, or whether auto-start is enabled for the encoder workflow.
  • The service reports a failed or stopped job: The restart button, retry behavior, and job-state meanings are specific to the playout vendor. Use that vendor’s instructions rather than guessing at a control.

What happens to the ended broadcast

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archived recording is separate from starting a new live event; creating or scheduling another stream is the recovery path described above.
