Give the agent a defined URL scope, a repeatable capture policy, and a per-URL reporting format. The sitemap supplies a starting inventory; it does not prove that every route, query state, or page on a site is represented. Ask the agent to inspect sitemap files, deduplicate the URLs in scope, visit each one, save consistently named screenshots, and report what happened to every entry.
What to include in the request
Be explicit about what “every page” means before the agent starts. A sitemap generally lists preferred canonical URLs, not every possible query-string variant, logged-in screen, or application state. Google recommends using the preferred URL when the same content is accessible at multiple URLs, and says sitemap submission is a hint rather than a guarantee that Google will fetch or use the sitemap (Google Search Central: Build and Submit a Sitemap).

- Site and allowed hosts: Give the root site URL and any explicitly authorized hosts the agent may follow from a sitemap index.
- Sitemap scope: Say whether to inspect a named sitemap, the sitemap index, or sitemap locations declared by the site. Require the agent to record which files it inspected.
- URL policy: Specify how to handle redirected destinations, query strings, fragments, locale paths, and duplicates. Preserve parameters that define materially different pages; remove tracking-only parameters only if you name them.
- Exclusions and access: List routes to exclude. Ask the agent to inspect applicable
robots.txtrules and stop or report when the requested scope is blocked or requires credentials it does not have. Google documents robots.txt as crawler access rules that apply to the host where the file is posted; that does not by itself determine authorization for every browser-automation task (Google Crawling Infrastructure: robots.txt specifications). - Capture policy: Choose viewport-only or full-page, fixed viewport dimensions, image format, output directory, and a consistent page-ready condition.
- Report: Require a result row for every manifest entry, including failures and exclusions, and a count summary that reconciles with the manifest.

Before browsing, inspect the applicable
robots.txtrules. Choose the screenshot scope deliberately
Viewport capture
Use a viewport screenshot when the review concerns what a visitor initially sees at a particular screen size, such as a landing-page layout or responsive breakpoint. Fix the viewport for the whole run so images are comparable.

Full-page capture
Use full-page mode when reviewers need the document’s entire scrollable content in one image. Playwright’s screenshot command can capture the viewport, a target element, or the full scrollable page; full-page mode applies to the current page, not all URLs in a sitemap. Very tall captures may be awkward to inspect, so for long pages you can instead define a section or tiled-capture policy before the run. The latter is an operational choice, not a guarantee of Playwright behavior.
The Playwright CLI supports custom output filenames and PNG, JPEG, or WebP screenshots. Its default filename is timestamped when none is supplied, so set names explicitly for an auditable batch (Playwright CLI documentation).

Run the batch and verify coverage
- Discover: Read the chosen sitemap or sitemap index and collect URLs only within the authorized host scope.
- Normalize: Apply the stated URL policy, retain meaningful query strings and locale routes, and deduplicate. Keep the original source URL in the manifest even if a normalized form is used for duplicate detection.
- Capture individually: Navigate to each URL and wait for a condition appropriate to the site—such as a key element appearing or the page becoming sufficiently stable—rather than assuming one fixed sleep works on all pages.
- Save predictably: Use the same viewport and image format, and a filename derived from the URL with a collision-resistant suffix. Record the final URL so redirects are visible rather than silently changing the inventory.
- Reconcile: Compare the manifest with the result log. Report discovered, deduplicated, attempted, successful, redirected, failed, and excluded counts, and provide a reason for every item not successfully captured.
Playwright’s quick start demonstrates an agent interaction loop of opening a URL, inspecting the page snapshot, interacting where needed, and inspecting the updated state. For sitemap work, repeat navigation and capture per manifest entry; the sitemap does not itself take screenshots (Playwright: Getting started).
Make “every page” a verifiable claim
Define completion against the manifest, not against an unbounded idea of the whole website. A useful report distinguishes URLs discovered in the sitemap from URLs successfully attempted and captured. If some pages fail, are inaccessible, redirect outside scope, or are excluded by policy, name them and give the reason. Even a fully processed sitemap cannot establish that no other pages exist: it may omit URLs, and canonical URL selection intentionally favors preferred versions over duplicates.

For security and operational clarity, keep the browser run within the authorized hosts and available access. Robots.txt can inform crawler access policy, but it is not a universal permission ruling for browser automation. Do not attempt to evade a block or enter authenticated areas without authorization.
