It is not a clean slate: the character leaves its guild, loses its in-game quest log and social lists, and may have faction-specific reputations, achievements, mounts, and pets converted, reset, or left without an equivalent.
Prepare the character before buying the service. Clear mail and auctions, resolve guild leadership, remove any WoW Token, finish or abandon quests whose items are difficult to replace, and make sure no other character service is pending. After the change, Blizzard imposes a three-day wait before another faction or race change, while service processing can take up to 24 hours.

What Faction Change does
Faction Change is a paid World of Warcraft character service sold through the Battle.net or in-game shop. You choose the opposite faction, then select a race available to that faction and your class, along with a new appearance and, if desired or required, a new name. Blizzard describes the included race option this way: “Your faction change also includes a free race change for your class, so you’ll fit in with your new friends.”

How much does a WoW Faction Change cost?
Blizzard’s cited promotional page lists one Faction Change at a regular price of $30. During that promotion, bundles were listed at $21 for one service, $42 for three, and $95 for eight. Those bundle figures are promotional prices, not permanent rates. The amount charged to you can differ because Blizzard applies regional currency, taxes, and time-limited discounts.

Because shop pricing and service policy are volatile, open the current Faction Change listing immediately before paying. The checkout page is the authority for your account’s currency, tax, and available bundles.
Who cannot use the service?
Faction Change is unavailable for Starter Edition accounts, Classic Era characters, Remix characters, and class-trial characters. A character can also be blocked temporarily by another service or by failing account and character requirements.

Service conflicts and recent changes
- A pending character service can prevent purchase until it finishes.
- A character boost used within the previous 72 hours can make the character ineligible.
- A race change or faction change within the previous three days can block another transaction.
- Blizzard applies a three-day cooldown after a completed faction change before that character can change faction or race again.
Character-state requirements
The character must satisfy Blizzard’s current level, mailbox, auction-house, guild-leader, and gold-limit rules. The exact limits can vary with the current expansion and service policy, so check the live support article and the purchase screen rather than relying on an old guide.
Prepare the character before purchasing
Preparation prevents the most painful losses. Complete the following on the character that will change factions.

- Resolve quests and quest items. Finish quests you can reasonably complete, or abandon anything that has a unique item you may not be able to replace. Blizzard clears the quest log when the service completes, abandons active quests, and destroys ordinary quest items in the inventory. Make notes or screenshots of quest names and objectives so you can reacquire unfinished content.
- Empty the mailbox. Retrieve every message and attachment. A character with mail is not eligible until the mailbox is clear.
- Cancel auctions and collect proceeds. Remove active auctions and wait for returned items or currency to arrive before starting the service.
- Fix guild status. Transfer guild leadership to another character or leave the guild. The changing character cannot remain guild master and leaves its guild as part of the process.
- Remove any WoW Token from the character’s inventory. Blizzard blocks the service while a token is present.
- Check all pending services. Confirm that no boost, race change, faction change, realm-related character service, or other transaction is still processing.
- Record social and progression information. Screenshot your in-game friend and ignore lists, active quest objectives, faction-specific reputation totals, and any achievement progress you care about. These records do not preserve the data automatically; they make recovery and reacquisition easier.
Do not destroy items casually while preparing. Anything destroyed, vendored, or disenchanted cannot be restored after the faction service.
How to buy and complete a Faction Change
- Open the World of Warcraft shop in-game or the World of Warcraft section of Battle.net and select Faction Change.
- Choose the eligible character and confirm that the service is available for that account and character.
- Select Horde or Alliance as the destination faction.
- Choose a race that your class can use on the destination faction. The included race change is part of the service, not a separate purchase.
- Set the character’s appearance and choose a name. If you change the name, the former name is reserved on that realm for 30 days.
- Review the confirmation screen carefully, including the destination faction, race, name, and any warnings about guild, mail, auctions, or restrictions.
- Submit payment and let the service process. Blizzard’s transfer guidance says processing can take up to 24 hours.
- Do not log in to the character while the service is processing. A premature login can cause the transaction to fail or leave the character locked until support resolves it.
- After completion, log in, verify the new race and faction, and rebuild your quest and social workflow before spending or deleting anything.
What carries over unchanged
The service preserves many character and account systems, but “preserved” does not always mean that the visible faction label remains identical.

Raid-lockout detail
Changing faction does not erase the character’s raid lockout. However, if the character started a Mythic raid before the change, it cannot continue that same run afterward. Plan around scheduled Mythic groups rather than assuming the transferred lockout is fully usable.
What is converted rather than simply retained?
Titles
Faction-specific titles convert to equivalent cross-faction titles when Blizzard has defined an equivalent. A title may therefore appear under a different name or category after the change rather than disappearing outright.
Mounts and pets
Faction-specific mounts and pets can convert to the other faction’s equivalent when Blizzard supports a matching item. Collections are account-wide, but not every faction-exclusive mount or pet has an equivalent. An item without a supported counterpart should not be treated as guaranteed to remain usable on the new faction.

Reputations
Faction-specific reputations convert to an equivalent reputation when one exists. If Blizzard has no equivalent, the reputation can return to neutral. Allied Race reputations do not convert because Allied Races are not loyal to either Horde or Alliance. Check any reputation tied to a vendor, unlock, or achievement before changing; a converted or neutral reputation may require rebuilding before that benefit is available again.
Faction-specific achievement progress
Faction-specific achievement progress can convert or reset. Incomplete faction-specific progress should be treated as at risk, even when account-wide achievements remain safe. Finish a near-complete objective first when doing so is practical, and capture the achievement’s current state before purchase.
What is lost or disrupted?
Guild membership
The character leaves its guild. Transfer leadership or arrange a replacement before starting, then join the destination-faction guild after the service completes.
In-game friends and ignores
The in-game friend list and ignore list are cleared. Your Battle.net friends list is not cleared, so account-level contacts remain there even though character-level lists do not.
Quest log and ordinary quest items
The entire quest log is cleared, active quests are abandoned, and ordinary quest items in the inventory are destroyed. Reacquire unfinished quests after the change where the game still offers them. Unique or obsolete quest chains may not be immediately available, which is why documenting them beforehand matters.

Irrecoverable item actions
Items destroyed, vendored, or disenchanted before or during preparation cannot be restored after the service. Store valuable gear, materials, and collectibles safely instead of cleaning your bags aggressively.

Faction Change is most useful when preserving the existing character matters more than avoiding a service fee. Rerolling avoids Faction Change eligibility rules but starts a new character, while a realm transfer addresses location rather than faction. The available evidence does not establish current realm-transfer or reroll pricing, so those cells are intentionally marked as not stated.

The practical choice is therefore a trade-off: pay to preserve level, gear, collections, and most lockout data while accepting conversion and social disruption, or start a new character and avoid the service’s eligibility and cooldown rules at the cost of character-specific progress.
After the change: a verification checklist
- Confirm the character displays the intended faction, race, appearance, and name.
- Check the mailbox, bags, currency, equipment, transmog collection, and mounts before deleting or selling anything.
- Rejoin the intended guild and rebuild the in-game friend and ignore lists.
- Open the reputation panel and identify conversions, neutralized reputations, and any unlocks that now require work.
- Review achievements for faction-specific progress that converted or reset.
- Reacquire abandoned quests and replace destroyed ordinary quest items where the game allows it.
- Check raid information before joining a group, especially if the character had an active Mythic lockout.
- Wait out the three-day cooldown before attempting another faction or race change.
Troubleshooting common blocks and mistakes
The shop will not let me select the character
Check the account type and character mode first: Starter Edition, Classic Era, Remix, and class-trial characters cannot use Faction Change. Then check for a recent boost, race change, faction change, or another pending service.
The transaction is pending
Allow up to 24 hours and do not log in repeatedly while processing. Logging in too early can fail or lock the character. If the service remains incomplete after the stated processing window, use Blizzard support with the transaction details.
I still have mail, auctions, or a WoW Token
Retrieve all mail, cancel active auctions and collect returned items or proceeds, and remove the WoW Token from the character’s inventory. These are character-state blockers, not optional cleanup.
I am the guild master
Transfer guild leadership before purchasing. The character cannot remain guild master through the faction change.
A mount, pet, reputation, or achievement looks different
Faction-specific data is converted only when Blizzard has an equivalent. Review the collection or reputation panel for the destination-faction version, and expect unsupported equivalents or incomplete faction-specific progress to be absent or reset.
How long until you can change back?
Blizzard applies a three-day cooldown before the character can undergo another faction change or race change. This is separate from the service’s processing time, which can take up to 24 hours. A name change also reserves the old name on the realm for 30 days, so changing back does not guarantee that the former name is immediately available.
Rules for current expansion content, Classic modes, gold limits, cooldowns, and promotional pricing can change. Recheck Blizzard’s live support guidance and the shop immediately before purchase, especially if your character has valuable faction reputations, an active Mythic lockout, or a recently completed character service.
