In Dressmaker, you change a garment’s displayed color in the sketchbook and change its apparent texture by selecting a different fabric or patterned material in the fabric shop. There is no documented in-game dye, paint, or separate texture tool. Use fabric samples in the sketchbook to preview combinations, check the resulting style tags, then buy enough material and use it during cutting.
What changes color, and what changes texture?
Dressmaker treats color and material as related but separate design choices:

- Color: a panel-level choice made in the sketchbook. You can recolor individual garment panels without replacing the fabric sample.
- Texture or material: the visible surface character supplied by the selected fabric or patterned material. Examples shown in the fabric guide include cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet, but they are not an exhaustive list of the game’s library.
A fabric swap can change more than the surface appearance. Style tags are calculated from the combination of the selected fabric and the dress pattern, so changing only a panel’s color may not produce the same tag result as changing the material or pattern.

Change a dress panel’s color in the sketchbook
- Open the design. Enter the dress design in the sketchbook.
- Select the panel to edit. Work on the individual garment section whose displayed color you want to change.
- Apply the new color. Use the sketchbook’s color controls for that panel. Repeat the selection for every panel that should use the same color; recoloring one panel does not automatically recolor the entire garment.
- Inspect the whole dress. Check the preview for seams, contrasting sections and the way the color sits beside the other panels.
This operation changes the design preview. It does not, by itself, replace the fabric you must purchase for production. If the commission also requires a particular material, select and buy that fabric separately.

Change the apparent texture or material
1. Open the fabric shop
Browse the available fabric samples or bolts in the fabric shop. The exact stock, prices, unlocks and tag values can vary with your build and progression.
2. Read the shop card before buying
Check every part of the card associated with a candidate:
- Displayed color, pattern or color name
- Material name and visible surface character
- Style-tag values or descriptors shown by the shop
- Quantity supplied
- Price
Do not infer that two fabrics with a similar color will behave identically. Their material properties and pattern combination can produce different style tags.
3. Drag the fabric sample into the sketchbook
Drag a sample from the shop into the sketchbook to see how it looks with your current dress pattern. This preview is the practical way to compare material combinations before committing money or cutting cloth.

4. Try patterned materials as well as plain fabrics
If the desired surface effect is a print, weave or other visible pattern, select a patterned material rather than trying to reproduce it with a panel color. The fabric sample controls the material appearance; the panel color control is for displayed color.
5. Keep the combination that fits the commission
Compare the candidate’s color or pattern, material appearance, tags, available quantity and price. The in-game preview and shop card are authoritative for the current build.
How fabric and dress patterns affect style tags
Tags do not necessarily appear from the fabric sample alone. The developer explains that they are a combination of the fabric and the chosen dress pattern:

Use this sequence when a tag is missing or unexpectedly changes:
- Open the dress pattern in the sketchbook.
- Drag the fabric sample into the sketchbook instead of viewing the pattern by itself.
- Read the resulting tags for that exact fabric-and-pattern pairing.
- Swap one variable at a time—a fabric, a panel color or the pattern—so you can see which change affected the result.
A color change alone may leave the material and pattern relationship intact, while a fabric change can alter several tags at once. Treat the displayed combination, not a general expectation about cotton, silk or another material, as the meaningful result.
Buy enough fabric and use it in the cutting stage
Once you have chosen the combination, the design still has to be produced. Follow the game’s normal material-to-cut workflow:
- Confirm the required quantity. Compare the amount on the shop card with the amount needed for the commission and your available budget.
- Buy the selected fabric. Purchase enough of the exact sample or bolt used in the sketchbook preview.
- Enter the cutting stage. Move from design preparation to the cutting interface.
- Place every pattern piece. Arrange each piece on the fabric area shown by the game.
- Rotate pieces when needed. Use the available rotation input to fit pieces while respecting the current grain guidance.
- Check visible grain and quality feedback. The cutting interface’s current indicators take priority over rules from older guides or another build.
- Cut only after the layout is acceptable. A visually attractive color or texture does not compensate for wasted material or a poor cutting layout.
Buying a sample for preview is not the same as having enough material for all pattern pieces. Verify quantity before cutting, especially when the shop offers a small amount or when the dress uses many pieces.

Compare fabric choices before committing

Common problems and fixes
The whole dress did not change color
Color is edited at panel level. Return to the sketchbook and apply the color to each panel that should change. Check the complete preview afterward for sections that intentionally remain contrasting.
The fabric looks different from the color I selected
Color and material are separate. A color control does not replace the fabric surface. Drag the intended fabric sample into the sketchbook, then compare the resulting material appearance and pattern combination.
No style tags are visible
Drag a fabric sample into the sketchbook while the dress pattern is open. The tags are generated from that pairing and may not appear when the pattern is viewed without a sample.

This is expected when the fabric-and-pattern combination changes. Recheck the tags for the new sample instead of relying on the previous fabric’s result.
I cannot find a specific material
Stock and unlocks depend on build and progression. Check the current shop inventory and continue through the game’s available progression rather than assuming that an example listed in a guide is available immediately.
The cutting result conflicts with an older guide
Some beginner and cutting instructions describe archived Prototype 0.5.5 observations. Grain-line rules, rotation inputs, tag behavior and scoring details can differ by version. Follow the prompts and feedback displayed by your current build.
Will a certain color or texture automatically satisfy a commission?
No universal numeric scoring formula is published for the complete release. A color or texture can support a commission’s requested style, but it is not a guaranteed score by itself. Use the current commission requirements, sketchbook preview, tags and cutting feedback together.

Version and accuracy boundaries
The available beginner and cutting material combines released-game instructions with archived observations from Prototype 0.5.5. That means a control name, input, grain rule, tag response or scoring detail may not match your current build exactly. When the written instruction and the game interface disagree, use the current on-screen prompt and feedback.
The fabric examples—cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet—illustrate the kinds of materials you may encounter; they are not a complete catalog. Exact inventory, prices, quantities, unlock conditions and tag values are build- and progression-dependent.
A reliable workflow for every dress
- Open the design in the sketchbook.
- Recolor individual panels as needed.
- Browse the fabric shop and read each candidate’s card.
- Drag samples into the sketchbook to compare surface appearance and pattern combinations.
- Read the tags produced by the exact fabric-and-pattern pairing.
- Check quantity and price against the commission.
- Buy enough of the selected fabric.
- Lay out and rotate pattern pieces in the cutting stage.
- Use the current grain and quality feedback before cutting.
- Recheck the finished preview against the commission instead of assuming that one color or texture guarantees success.
This workflow keeps the three decisions distinct: panel color in the sketchbook, material appearance through the fabric sample, and production quality during cutting.
