On Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings > Accessibility > Button Mapping to remap a connected controller. Choose the controller, edit its button assignments, then select Save. The GL and GR buttons on compatible controllers are configured separately through Quick Settings while a game is running.
Change button mapping in System Settings
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Accessibility, then Button Mapping.
- Select the controller you want to change, then choose Edit Controller Mapping.
- Select a button, then select the function you want it to perform.
- When you are finished, select Save.
Nintendo Support’s Guide to Accessibility Features on Nintendo Switch 2 notes: “Only controllers that are currently connected will be displayed.” Connect the controller first if it does not appear in the list.

To restore the default assignments, return to the Button Mapping menu and select Reset Controller Mapping. Nintendo says this does not delete registered presets.
Map the GL and GR buttons during a game
The GL and GR buttons on the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller are assigned through Quick Settings while playing a game—not through the general controller-editing steps above.

- Start a game and hold the controller’s HOME button to open Quick Settings.
- Open the GL or GR button assignment option and choose the function you want.
Nintendo’s Quick Settings guide says these assignments are saved per game and per user, and shared between compatible controllers. You can also add Button Mapping to Quick Settings as a shortcut to its System Settings page; that shortcut does not replace the in-game GL/GR assignment route.
Which controllers can be remapped?
Nintendo lists these controllers as supporting button mapping on Switch 2:

Mapping is not available for every physical control. Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessibility guide says POWER, volume, HOME, and SYNC buttons cannot be configured, and another button cannot be assigned to act as POWER, volume, or SYNC.

Find stick, vibration, and other controller options
Button Mapping is for assigning button functions. Related controls are separate settings: Switch 2 lets you change which side receives left-stick and right-stick input and change the orientation of Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con control sticks. The System Settings overview also lists controller grip/order, controller vibration, Joy-Con 2 Mouse Controls, and mouse sensitivity. Understand the wrench icon and reset prompt
A wrench icon beside the controller currently in use means that one or more of its inputs has been remapped or disabled. If a message appears when waking the console from sleep, choose Reset the Button Mapping to restore defaults or Use Without Resetting to keep the custom mapping. Nintendo explains the message in its button-mapping notice.
The Switch 2 menu path is Accessibility > Button Mapping. Do not use the older Switch-only Controllers and Sensors instructions for this console; Nintendo’s separate Nintendo Switch button-mapping guide covers that older menu route.
