Then select the new key and replace the key in your encoder. A custom key is useful if you want to reuse the same key or manually choose stream resolution; YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default.
What a custom YouTube stream key changes
A stream key is the credential your encoder uses to send its feed to YouTube. YouTube’s documented reason to create a custom key is to reuse that key. You can also enable manual resolution settings when creating one. A custom key is not required for ordinary streaming, and selecting one does not itself improve stream quality.

Leave the default automatic resolution and frame-rate detection in place unless you have a specific reason to control resolution manually. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default. If you need manual resolution selection, create a custom key and enable Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. YouTube’s stream settings instructions and its encoder settings guidance explain these options.
Create a custom stream key in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Create > Go Live to enter Live Control Room.
- Select the Stream tab.
- Open Select stream key and choose Create new stream key.
- Enter the settings you want. To choose resolution manually, turn on Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. Otherwise, keep automatic detection.
- Click Create. Select the new key from the stream key list.
- In your encoder, paste the new key into its Stream Key field, replacing the old one.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover connecting an encoder to a live stream. The exact appearance of encoder fields varies by software.

Keep the stream key and server URL in the right fields
The stream key and stream URL are separate values. The key acts as the stream’s password/address; the URL tells the encoder where to send the feed. Copy each into its matching field rather than pasting the key as the server URL.
If you are using RTMPS, copy the RTMPS stream URL separately from Live Control Room. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; select the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS option. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. This protocol choice is separate from creating a custom key and does not change the key-creation steps. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

When to keep the default or create a custom key
| Choice | Use it when | Resolution behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Default key and automatic detection | You do not need to reuse a custom key or manually select resolution. | YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection. |
| Custom key | You want to reuse the same key, or you need the manual settings option. | Manual resolution selection is available when you enable Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. |
If the custom key does not work
- The encoder will not start: Check that the encoder’s Stream Key field contains the newly selected key and that the server URL is in its separate URL field. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide recommends obtaining a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder if a third-party encoder fails to start.
- You reset or replaced the key: Update the encoder with the newly generated key; the previous value will not be the one to use. Only channel owners and managers can reset a key. Editors and viewers do not have that permission.
- You cannot find manual resolution settings: Confirm that you chose Create new stream key and look under Stream Resolution for Turn on manual settings. If you do not specifically need manual selection, use automatic detection.
- You are using RTMPS: Verify that the encoder has the RTMPS URL, not the ordinary RTMP URL, in its server field, and that the key remains in its own field.
Or let it run in the cloud

Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not camera streaming. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
