To add AI captions to a live stream, first choose where the captions should be created and delivered: use YouTube’s built-in automatic captions for an eligible English stream at normal latency, send a separate caption feed through compatible software, or add captions through an encoder or on-screen text overlay. These methods are not interchangeable: they differ in language support, setup, viewer controls, and whether the words appear in the replay.
Choose the right caption method
| Method | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic live captions | An eligible English-language YouTube stream using normal latency | Channel eligibility, stream language, latency, and whether captions are available for that individual stream |
| YouTube external caption feed | An event with compatible captioning software or a captioning provider | Signed caption ingestion URL, software compatibility, broadcast delay, and one-feed-per-entry-point limit |
| Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions | A production encoder that can carry captions in the video stream | Encoder support and the selected caption format |
| OBS plugin such as LocalVocal | A creator willing to install and configure a plugin for transcription, text display, caption delivery, or optional translation | Current OBS compatibility, release instructions, and how captions reach the destination platform |
| Google Cloud Live Stream AI captions | A team operating an HLS or DASH service | Supported language and service location, plus the timing and latency trade-off |
Turn on YouTube’s built-in automatic captions
YouTube’s built-in route is the simplest option when it is available: it does not require an OBS overlay or a separate caption feed. YouTube Help says automatic live captions are available in English only. The feature is limited to eligible channels and may not have been enabled for every channel. It is configured for individual live streams, not as a single channel-wide setting. See YouTube Help’s automatic captioning guidance.

- Set up the live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the stream you intend to broadcast and check its stream settings.
- Use English as the video language. The automatic live-caption option is English-only.
- Use normal latency. YouTube’s guidance lists normal latency as a requirement; low or ultra-low latency may make this route unavailable.
- Turn on captions for this stream. In the stream’s settings, open the Closed captions control and choose Automatic captions if the option appears. The control is per stream.
- Verify before relying on it. Confirm that the option is present and that captions appear during a test or preview. If it is absent, the channel may not be eligible or the feature may not yet be enabled for it.
Improve the speech signal
Automatic recognition depends on the audio reaching YouTube. YouTube identifies poor sound, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages spoken at the same time as possible reasons captions may fail. Reduce competing voices where practical and make the main speaker easy to hear. Recognition can also misrepresent accents, dialects, mispronunciations, or noisy speech; review captions where possible. YouTube does not provide an accuracy percentage in the cited setup guidance, so do not assume a particular error rate.

Know what happens after the live broadcast
Live automatic captions do not remain on the replay. YouTube generates separate captions for the video on demand later, and those captions may differ from the live version. If replay captions matter, check the recording separately after the stream.

Use a separate caption feed for a YouTube event
If YouTube’s automatic option is unavailable or unsuitable, its event workflow accepts captions from compatible captioning software through a signed caption ingestion URL. The caption feed is separate from the video stream, so your captioning software or provider must support YouTube’s delivery workflow. YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point.
- Set an accurate system clock. YouTube recommends this for the event caption workflow.
- Configure broadcast delay. YouTube recommends a 30- or 60-second delay for this workflow. Plan for that added delay in the event experience.
- Enable captions in the event settings. Turn on captions for the stream, then copy the signed caption ingestion URL.
- Give the signed URL to compatible caption software or your captioning provider. Confirm that the chosen system can send captions in the required format.
- Check security software if delivery fails. YouTube notes that antivirus software can interfere with captioning software.
Keep the signed ingestion URL private and share it only with the captioning system or operator that needs it. For the current event controls and workflow details, consult YouTube’s live caption setup guidance.

Use embedded captions or an OBS plugin
Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions
YouTube also documents an encoder-based route: select Embedded 608/708 captions and configure the encoder to provide EIA-608/CEA-708 captions. This is appropriate only if the encoder and production workflow can generate and carry that format. Check the encoder’s current documentation and confirm the result in the destination stream; choosing the option alone does not create captions.

OBS and LocalVocal
The LocalVocal project documents local real-time transcription, display through an OBS text source, file output, RTMP caption sending, and optional translation. Those are project-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that a given release works with every OBS version or streaming destination. Before a broadcast, check the project’s current release and installation instructions, then test how the captions appear in both the live stream and recording.
An OBS text overlay is a presentation choice, not the same thing as closed captions. Text rendered into the picture is visible as part of the video image; separately delivered captions depend on the destination player and caption workflow. Choose based on whether viewers need caption controls and whether captions must be available independently of the image.

Add translated captions to an HLS or DASH service
For operators of an HLS or DASH streaming service, Google Cloud Live Stream documents AI-generated captions and translated captions. This is a service-side streaming workflow, not a simple toggle for a typical creator going live on YouTube. Supported language codes vary by service location, so confirm that both the desired language and the region are supported before building around it.
Google documents generated captions as asynchronous by default. Synchronous display can reduce the mismatch between caption timing and audio, but increases end-to-end media latency. See Google Cloud Live Stream’s caption documentation for the service workflow and location-dependent language details.

Troubleshoot missing or poor captions
- Automatic captions are missing in YouTube Studio: Check that the stream is set to English and normal latency. The feature is limited to eligible channels and may not be enabled for yours.
- Captions appear late or fail to keep pace: Check the audio signal and the selected delivery method. For Google Cloud’s HLS/DASH workflow, asynchronous captions can be offset from audio; synchronous display reduces that mismatch at the cost of added media latency.
- Words are inaccurate: Improve sound quality, reduce overlapping voices, and avoid multiple simultaneous languages where practical. Review captions for errors rather than assuming automatic recognition is exact.
- The external caption feed does not connect: Verify that the software supports YouTube’s signed ingestion workflow, that the correct URL was copied, and that only one feed is configured for the stream entry point. Check the system clock and whether antivirus software is interfering.
- An OBS plugin stops working after an update: Check LocalVocal’s current release notes and installation instructions for compatibility with your OBS version, then test both the caption rendering and destination delivery before going live.
- Captions are absent from the replay: YouTube says live automatic captions do not carry over. Check the separate VOD captions after YouTube generates them.
