Yes—you can change your website’s domain while keeping the same hosting account and origin server. The safe sequence is to add the new hostname to the existing server, recreate the DNS records, point the new domain at that server, issue a TLS certificate, update your application, test everything, and only then switch visitors and search engines with permanent redirects from the old URLs.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The domain registration, DNS delegation, web-server binding, HTTPS certificate, email records, application URLs, and redirects are separate layers. Changing one does not automatically change the others. Keeping those layers aligned prevents outages, broken email, certificate warnings, lost deep links, and avoidable search-visibility problems.

What changes—and what stays the same
Your server can remain in place because a domain name is an address, not the machine that serves the site. A browser resolves the hostname through DNS, connects to the resulting IP address, negotiates HTTPS, and sends an HTTP request containing the hostname. Your web server then chooses the correct site configuration and document root.
| Layer | What you change | What can remain unchanged |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | Buy or renew the new domain and set its nameservers at the registrar. | Your existing registrar account, if desired. |
| Authoritative DNS | Create a zone for the new domain and copy the records that should exist under it. | The current DNS provider, unless you deliberately delegate elsewhere. |
| Web server | Add the new hostname as an alias, addon, virtual host, or primary-domain replacement. | The origin server, operating system, application files, database, and server IP. |
| TLS | Issue a certificate containing the new apex and any required subdomains. | The existing certificate for the old name until its redirects are retired. |
| Application | Change base URLs, canonical links, cookies, integrations, and generated assets. | Your content and database, after a tested backup and URL migration. |
| Search and visitors | Use permanent, URL-to-URL redirects and update sitemaps and properties. | The old URLs during the overlap period. |
| Recreate MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, autodiscover and verification records where applicable. | The mail service itself, if it supports the new domain. |
Because these layers are independent, changing nameservers alone does not configure your web server, and adding a domain in a hosting panel does not automatically recreate every third-party DNS or application setting.

Choose the migration model before touching DNS
Add the new domain alongside the old one
This is usually the lowest-risk approach. Add the new hostname as an alias or addon on the existing account, keep the old site live, and test the new hostname before changing traffic. It gives you a rollback path while recursive resolvers still hold cached DNS data.
Rename the hosting account’s primary domain
Some control panels support a primary-domain rename. cPanel documentation says a domain rename can update associated services such as email accounts, DNS records, and the document root. That automation is convenient but host-specific: confirm exactly what will be changed, what will not be changed, and whether existing aliases, cron jobs, API callbacks, and hard-coded URLs are affected. Take a backup first.

You can leave DNS authoritative at the current provider and create a new zone there, or delegate the new domain to a different managed DNS provider by changing nameservers at the registrar. The latter introduces another dependency and another propagation window. Do not change providers merely because you are changing the domain unless there is a separate reason.
| Decision | Lower-risk choice | When the alternative makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting configuration | Add the new domain alongside the old. | Rename the primary domain when your panel documents the behavior and you have verified dependencies. |
| DNS authority | Keep the current DNS provider. | Delegate to a new provider when its features, ownership, or operational requirements justify migration. |
| Redirects | Map every old URL to its matching new URL. | Use a host-wide fallback only for URLs with no meaningful counterpart. |
| Cutover | Run both domains during a staged overlap. | Immediate replacement only when downtime and rollback risk are acceptable. |
Inventory the old domain before making changes
Make a written inventory and export configuration where possible. The list is your migration checklist and rollback reference.
- A and AAAA records for the apex and every active subdomain.
- CNAME records, including
www, CDN endpoints, verification hosts, and service aliases. - MX records and mail-related TXT records: SPF, DKIM, DMARC and provider verification.
- CAA records, if used to restrict certificate authorities.
- CDN, WAF, firewall, rate-limit and bot-management rules.
- Web-server virtual hosts, document roots, rewrite rules and forced-HTTPS settings.
- CMS or framework base URL, canonical tags, cookie domain, media URLs and hard-coded absolute links.
- Sitemaps, robots directives, analytics properties, Search Console properties and conversion tags.
- Payment, OAuth, webhook, API callback, SSO and third-party verification URLs.
- Cron jobs, scheduled scripts, upload paths, mobile-app endpoints and links in email templates.
- Certificates, renewal jobs, private administrative URLs and any allowlists keyed to the old hostname.
Lower the DNS time-to-live (TTL) before a planned change only if your provider allows it and you understand its effect. A lower TTL does not override cached nameserver delegation; nameserver changes can still take considerably longer to be observed.
Step-by-step: move the domain while keeping the server
1. Register the new domain and preserve the old one
Register the new name before changing production settings. Do not let the old registration, DNS zone, certificate, or mail records expire during the migration. The old domain must remain resolvable so it can return redirects and receive straggling requests.
2. Add the new hostname to the existing hosting account
In your hosting panel, choose the option labelled Alias, Addon domain, Additional domain, or the equivalent virtual-host setting. Point it at the existing document root only when both names should serve the same application. If the panel creates a separate directory by default, set the document root deliberately and verify file permissions.

If you are changing a primary domain, read the panel’s migration warning and record the current document root, email accounts, DNS zone, redirects and service paths. Confirm that the rename will not silently delete aliases or overwrite a custom configuration.
3. Create the new DNS zone
Create a zone for the new domain at the authoritative DNS provider. Copy records selectively rather than blindly cloning every entry:
| Record | Typical purpose during this move | Migration action |
|---|---|---|
| A / AAAA | Maps the hostname to the origin IPv4 or IPv6 address. | Use the same address only if the new domain should reach the same server and that address is still valid. |
| CNAME | Points a subdomain to another hostname, such as a CDN or service endpoint. | Recreate only the aliases required by the new domain; confirm that the target service accepts the new hostname. |
| MX | Identifies inbound mail servers. | Copy the mail provider’s records exactly if mail is moving or must continue under the new domain. |
| TXT (SPF) | Authorizes systems that send mail for the domain. | Publish the provider’s new-domain policy; do not create multiple competing SPF records. |
| TXT (DKIM) | Publishes the public key used to verify signed mail. | Generate or copy the selector required by the mail service. |
| TXT (DMARC) | Sets receiving policy and reporting for mail authentication. | Recreate it for the new organizational domain and review reporting addresses. |
| TXT / CNAME verification | Proves ownership to analytics, search, payment and SaaS providers. | Reissue or copy each verification record as the provider instructs. |
| CAA | Restricts which certificate authorities may issue certificates. | Preserve compatible entries or certificate issuance may fail. |
Leave the old zone intact. A copied web record is not proof that mail, verification, API callbacks or subdomains will work under the new name.

For an authoritative DNS setup, publish the required A, AAAA or CNAME records. Decide explicitly how the apex and www hostname behave: either can be canonical, but both should resolve predictably and redirect or serve the intended site. If you are changing nameservers, enter the authoritative nameserver set at the registrar exactly as supplied by the DNS provider.
Check DNS from more than one recursive resolver and from a network outside your office. Look for stale answers, an unexpected IPv6 address, missing www, or a nameserver that still serves an empty or old zone.
5. Provision HTTPS for every required hostname
Obtain a certificate whose subject names cover the new apex and all live hostnames, commonly the apex and www. A certificate for the old domain does not authenticate the new one. Install the complete certificate chain and verify automated renewal before launch.
Test both HTTP and HTTPS. Confirm that HTTP redirects to the intended HTTPS URL, HTTPS does not loop, and the server presents the new certificate when the request uses the new hostname. Test representative pages, forms, logins, uploads, images, JavaScript, CSS, webhooks and API endpoints. Mixed-content warnings often reveal absolute old-domain URLs embedded in the application or database.

6. Update the application and integrations
Back up the database and files before changing the application’s base URL. Update the canonical site URL, generated asset URLs, cookie settings, allowed origins, trusted-host lists, password-reset links, email templates and any absolute URLs stored in content. Search the codebase and database for the old hostname, but review replacements so you do not alter historical references or third-party URLs accidentally.
Update analytics and search properties, submit the new sitemap, check robots directives, and add the new domain to payment, OAuth, webhook, SSO and API allowlists. Keep the old callback URLs active until every dependent service has been migrated.
7. Configure permanent, path-preserving redirects
Once the new hostname works, configure redirects on the old host at the web-server layer. Google Search Central states: “Start the site move by configuring the server to redirect from the old URLs to the new ones.” Use HTTP 301 or 308 for a permanent move.
Prefer one-to-one mappings:
https://old.example/about?ref=nav→https://new.example/about?ref=navhttps://old.example/products/widget→https://new.example/products/widget
Preserve paths and query strings when the destination exists. Avoid redirect chains, blanket redirects to the homepage, temporary 302 responses, and rules that strip useful campaign parameters. If a page has no equivalent, return an intentional 404 or 410 rather than sending unrelated content to a generic page.
8. Launch with both domains live
Change the application’s canonical domain and publish the new DNS while the old domain still resolves. Do not shut down the old virtual host or certificate. Test from a clean browser session and from a device that has not cached the site.
Verify:
- The apex and
wwwresolve as intended over IPv4 and IPv6. - The new certificate is valid, trusted and renewed automatically.
- Old URLs return a single permanent redirect to the matching new URL.
- New URLs load without mixed content, broken assets or login-cookie failures.
- Mail sends and receives, and SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment behaves as expected.
- Webhooks, APIs, forms, analytics, search verification and scheduled jobs still function.
9. Monitor, then retire old configuration
Watch server access logs, error logs, DNS answers, certificate status, analytics, mail delivery and support reports for both hostnames. Search crawlers, bookmarked links, cached documents and third-party integrations may continue using the old name after launch.
Keep the old domain registration, DNS zone, certificate and redirect virtual host active until traffic and logs show that they are no longer needed. There is no universal number of days that guarantees completion; the right duration depends on traffic patterns, resolver caching, link usage and business-critical integrations.

DNS propagation: what “up to 48 hours” means
Amazon Route 53 documentation says recursive resolvers commonly cache nameserver data for 24–48 hours and that replacing nameservers can take up to 48 hours to become fully visible. This is a caching window, not a promise that every user will switch at exactly the same time. Some networks update sooner; others retain data until its cache expires.
During the window, two visitors can receive different DNS answers. That is why the old and new configurations must both be valid. An incomplete nameserver change can make the domain unavailable if some resolvers reach a zone that lacks the required records.
How to check propagation
- Query the domain through multiple public recursive resolvers and at least one resolver on a different network.
- Query the authoritative nameservers directly to confirm that the intended zone is published.
- Check A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT records separately; web success does not prove mail success.
- Compare results over time and record the resolver, timestamp and answer.
- Inspect the certificate and HTTP response from each resolved address, not only from your local browser.
Protecting search visibility during the move
A domain change is also a URL migration. Search engines must discover the new URLs, understand that the old URLs moved permanently, and recrawl the destination pages. Preserve the existing URL paths wherever practical, map every old URL to its closest new equivalent, update canonical tags and publish a sitemap containing the new URLs.
Use permanent server-side redirects rather than relying on JavaScript or meta-refresh techniques. Keep redirects active while crawlers and users transition. Monitor crawl errors, indexed pages, impressions, clicks, ranking queries and server logs in the search console and analytics systems you use.
The available documentation does not establish a universal percentage for ranking loss, downtime or migration success. Results depend on redirect completeness, DNS and certificate correctness, application behavior, content changes, crawl timing and monitoring quality. A technically clean move can still show temporary volatility while URLs are recrawled.
Email: why changing the website domain can break mail
Web hosting and email are often configured in the same DNS zone but are separate services. A new website A record does not move mail. Conversely, copying only the old website records can leave the new domain without MX or authentication records.
If mail addresses are changing, provision the new mailboxes or aliases before publishing the new address. Recreate the provider’s MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records exactly, including selector names and policy syntax. Update forwarding rules, autoresponders, address books, signatures, transactional-mail settings and applications that authenticate with the old address.
Best Value
Keep old mailboxes or forwarding active during the transition. Test inbound delivery from an external account, outbound delivery to major recipient domains, authentication results, attachments and password-reset messages. A successful website cutover is not evidence that email is ready.
Common failure modes and fixes
The new domain shows the wrong site
The hostname may not be bound to the correct virtual host or document root. Confirm the alias/addon configuration, remove conflicting host entries, and test with the exact Host header and HTTPS SNI that a browser sends.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHTTPS reports a certificate error
The certificate may cover only the old name, the new name may not have passed validation, or the server may present the wrong certificate. Issue a certificate containing every required hostname, install its chain, verify DNS validation records, and test renewal.
Some visitors see the old site and others see an error
Resolvers may be using cached nameserver data, or one authoritative zone may be incomplete. Query each authoritative nameserver directly, compare records, and keep both old and new configurations operational until caches expire.
Redirects loop or lose paths
Conflicting HTTPS and canonical-host rules commonly create loops. Reduce the migration to one authoritative destination, remove duplicate rules, preserve the request path, and test a representative sample of query strings and trailing-slash variants.
Images, scripts or stylesheets fail
Search for old absolute URLs, blocked mixed content, restrictive content-security policies, and CDN host settings. Update stored content and allow the new origin before forcing HTTPS everywhere.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Mail stops arriving
Check the new zone’s MX records first, then SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Confirm that the mail provider has accepted the new domain and that forwarding, aliases and mailbox provisioning are complete. Do not delete the old MX records until the old address transition is intentional.
API callbacks or logins fail
Third-party providers often authorize exact hostnames. Add the new callback, redirect, webhook, CORS and cookie origins, verify them in a test environment, and leave the old entries enabled until migration is complete.
Registrar transfer is a different operation
Moving a domain registration from one registrar to another does not automatically move the website or DNS. A transfer can avoid downtime when the existing nameservers continue to function, as registrar documentation explains, but you still need to configure the new domain, certificate, application and redirects separately. Treat registration transfer and domain-name migration as two independent projects unless you have a specific reason to combine them.
Quick Recap
Final go-live checklist
