One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShort answer: AWS can cost under $2–$9 per month in older, usage-based examples when a Valheim instance runs about 20 hours a week, but those figures are from 2022 and exclude several billable resources. A server left on continuously costs far more in compute time. Managed Valheim hosting usually costs more than intermittent AWS compute, yet its monthly fee buys a control panel, support, updates and routine maintenance. Choose AWS if you can administer Linux and automate shutdowns; choose managed hosting if predictable billing and low effort matter more.
What you are actually comparing
AWS self-hosting means renting infrastructure and operating the Valheim server yourself. You select an EC2 virtual machine, install the dedicated-server software and its dependencies, configure network access, maintain the operating system, and create your own backup and recovery process. You pay for resources while they exist or run, not for a single Valheim-specific product.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Managed game-server hosting is a service built around the game. The provider normally supplies a preconfigured instance, a web panel, basic monitoring and a support channel. The exact hardware, player policy, mod workflow, crossplay support, backup retention and cancellation terms differ by provider, so a headline monthly price is not a complete comparison.
The important distinction is not simply AWS versus a host. It is variable infrastructure billing plus your time versus a predictable service fee plus less administration. Compare both on actual uptime, location and latency, memory and CPU headroom, backups, recovery, technical control and commercial terms.

AWS cost figures and what they mean
The published AWS examples below are historical estimates from 2022. They assume an instance is used for roughly 20 hours per week, not that it runs all month. They are useful for understanding the shape of the bill, but they are not current universal quotes.
| Example EC2 size | Memory in the example | Estimated monthly cost | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| t3a.small | 1 GiB | Under $2 | 2022 estimate at about 20 hours of use per week |
| t3a.medium | 4 GiB | Under $5 | 2022 estimate at about 20 hours of use per week |
| t3a.large | 8 GiB | Under $9 | 2022 estimate at about 20 hours of use per week |
| Route 53 domain and hosted zone in the example architecture | Not applicable | Under $1 | 2022 estimate; DNS charges are separate from EC2 |
These amounts can change with AWS Region, instance generation, storage size, snapshot retention, data transfer, public IPv4 pricing, taxes and the number of hours the machine is running. Recalculate with the current AWS pricing calculator before treating any figure as a present-day quote. The examples also do not establish a current price for a particular Valheim player count.
Why uptime dominates
Twenty hours per week is an intermittent schedule. A continuously running server uses 168 compute hours every week, roughly 8.4 times the weekly runtime in that example. The compute portion of the bill therefore grows dramatically before storage, addresses and backups are considered. A group that plays only on scheduled evenings can make AWS attractive; a world that must be available at any time loses much of that advantage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteResources that continue billing when the instance stops
A scheduled stop prevents EC2 runtime charges while the virtual machine is stopped, but it does not make the architecture free. Attached EBS volumes remain allocated. Snapshots can incur storage charges, and a public IPv4 address, DNS, data transfer and other resources can continue to generate charges. Include every resource in your budget and remove resources you no longer need.
Elastic sizing is a capability, not a recommendation
The reference design illustrates resizing from a t3a.nano with 0.5 GiB of memory to an m5.24xlarge with 384 GiB. That range demonstrates AWS elasticity; it does not identify a sensible Valheim size. Start with a measured, modest configuration, watch CPU and memory during peak activity, and resize only when evidence shows that you need more capacity. A larger instance raises the hourly rate even if your player group does not use the additional resources.

How the AWS reference architecture works
The reference design combines several AWS services rather than treating EC2 as a standalone box:
- EC2: runs the Linux operating system and Valheim dedicated server.
- Security groups: permit the Valheim traffic required by connected clients while leaving unrelated ports closed.
- DNS: provides a name that can be updated if the server address changes.
- Scheduled control: automation starts and stops the instance around play sessions and can optionally resize it on a schedule.
- Backups: daily restore points are retained for seven days in the reference setup.
This arrangement can be operated through a serverless control layer and an API that exposes actions such as starting, stopping and resizing the game server. Automation is valuable because it makes the cheapest schedule repeatable instead of relying on someone to remember to shut the machine down.
What stopping does and does not do
Stopping the EC2 instance stops its compute runtime billing. It does not delete the instance, its EBS data or its backup history. Players cannot connect while it is stopped, and any scheduled start must occur before a play session. Verify that the world is saved and that no one is connected before a stop action runs.
Backups and restore points
The reference architecture creates a daily restore point and keeps seven days. That is a defined retention policy, not a guarantee that every possible corruption or accidental deletion can be reversed. Decide whether daily backups are enough for your group, test a restore on a non-production copy, and document who can perform recovery.
What running the server yourself requires
Valheim’s official dedicated-server guidance describes a persistent world as useful for friends who want to play at any time, while warning that setup requires some scripting knowledge and, depending on configuration, router knowledge for traffic between the server and clients. On AWS, the provider supplies the infrastructure; you remain responsible for the software stack.

Linux and library prerequisites
The guide lists libatomic1, libpulse-dev and libpulse0 as additional Linux packages. It specifies minimum library versions of GLIBC_2.29 and GLIBCXX_3.4.26. If the host distribution is older than those requirements, running the server in Docker is an option. Confirm that your chosen image, storage paths and update process preserve the world files.
Operational duties
An AWS owner must handle:
- IAM users, roles and least-privilege permissions.
- Security-group rules and any required DNS updates.
- Operating-system security updates and reboots.
- Steam and Valheim dedicated-server updates, including checking that a new version does not disrupt mods.
- World-file backups, retention and restoration.
- Monitoring for failed starts, disk exhaustion and a stopped process.
- Incident response when players cannot connect or a save is damaged.
- Cost reviews for idle instances, snapshots, addresses and data transfer.
That work has an economic value even when the AWS invoice is small. If you spend an hour diagnosing a networking or update problem, the effective cost may exceed the infrastructure charge for the month.
A practical AWS setup and cost-control sequence
The following sequence mirrors the responsibilities in the reference design without assuming a particular Linux distribution or Valheim release.
- Choose a Region near the players. Latency and regional availability matter more to play quality than a tiny hourly price difference. Check that the selected Region offers the instance family, public IPv4 option and storage features you intend to use.
- Create a narrowly scoped IAM arrangement. Use separate administrative and runtime permissions. Avoid handing the game process credentials that can modify unrelated AWS resources.
- Launch the EC2 instance and storage. Select an operating system meeting the library requirements, allocate enough EBS capacity for the server and world backups, and record the volume type and size for cost calculations.
- Install dependencies and the dedicated server. Install the listed libraries, verify the GLIBC and GLIBCXX versions, then install the Valheim server through your chosen distribution method. Keep world data on a known path that is included in backups.
- Configure the security group. Open only the Valheim ports required by the official guide and administration method. Do not expose SSH or other management services to the entire internet; restrict source addresses or use a secure management path.
- Set the server identity and world settings. Choose the world, password and launch options your group needs. Test a connection from outside the AWS network before inviting everyone.
- Assign and manage addressing. Decide whether players use a stable public address or a DNS name. Remember that public IPv4 and DNS resources can cost money even when EC2 is stopped.
- Automate start and stop actions. Schedule starts before normal play times and stops after a safe shutdown window. Add a manual override for an unexpected session and alert on failed automation.
- Implement daily restore points. Retain seven days if that matches your risk tolerance, and periodically perform a test restore. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a verified recovery plan.
- Measure before resizing. Review memory, CPU, disk and network behavior during the busiest session. Resize only when a measured bottleneck justifies the higher rate, and include any reboot or downtime in your plan.
- Recalculate the bill monthly. Check compute hours, EBS gigabytes, snapshots, IPv4, DNS, transfer and taxes. Delete orphaned volumes, snapshots and addresses after migrations.
Managed dedicated game-server hosting: what the fee buys
A managed Valheim service bundles infrastructure with operations. Typical inclusions may be a one-click deployment, web console, automatic game updates, scheduled backups, file access, mod installation tools, monitoring and human support. None of those features should be assumed: ask the provider for an itemized description.
Questions to ask before subscribing
- Is the plan month-to-month, and what is the cancellation and refund policy?
- Does the renewal price differ from an introductory price?
- Where are the servers located, and can you select a Region near your players?
- What CPU model, memory allocation and storage type are included? Is the allocation shared or reserved?
- Is there a concurrent-player limit, and what happens when you exceed it?
- Are Valheim crossplay and the mods or plugins you use supported?
- How often are backups taken, how long are they retained, and can you download them?
- Can you restore a backup yourself, or must support perform it?
- What monitoring and support response times are included?
- Can you export the world and configuration if you migrate elsewhere?
- Are setup, migration, extra storage, additional backups or support charged separately?
A managed panel can reduce Linux and networking work, but it may restrict operating-system access, custom automation or unusual mod workflows. Confirm those limits before moving an established world.

Use a worksheet that separates predictable charges from usage-dependent ones. For AWS, record the hourly EC2 rate multiplied by actual running hours, then add EBS, snapshots, public IPv4, DNS, data transfer and taxes. For managed hosting, record the recurring plan fee plus setup, extra storage, backup, overage, tax and renewal charges. Add an explicit value for your administration time on either option.
| Decision factor | AWS self-managed | Managed Valheim host | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Billing pattern | Variable with uptime and attached resources | Usually a recurring plan price | Current rate, taxes, renewal and overages |
| Intermittent play | Strong fit when start/stop automation is reliable | You may pay while idle unless the plan supports suspension | Idle policy and automatic scheduling |
| Always-on world | Compute runs continuously; savings from shutdown disappear | Predictable monthly charge can be easier to budget | Included CPU, memory and traffic limits |
| Administration | You patch, secure, monitor and restore | Provider handles much of the platform work | Support scope and response times |
| Control | Root-level infrastructure and custom automation | Panel-led controls and possible restrictions | OS access, file access and mod policy |
| Recovery | You design retention and test restores | Backups may be included but vary by plan | Frequency, retention, downloadable exports and restore process |
| Migration | Standard files and infrastructure definitions can be retained | Export terms vary | World-file access and cancellation procedure |
When AWS is likely to win
AWS is a strong candidate when the group plays in concentrated sessions, someone can administer Linux, and automation can stop the instance safely. It also suits owners who need custom monitoring, infrastructure-as-code, unusual networking or the ability to resize for a temporary event. The low historical estimates are meaningful only when the instance is actually stopped outside those sessions and ancillary resources are controlled.
When managed hosting is likely to win
Managed hosting is usually the better fit when players expect a persistent world without an operator, the owner does not want to maintain Linux, or support and a predictable bill are worth paying for. It can also be preferable when the provider offers a nearby Region, tested Valheim updates and straightforward restores that would take you significant time to build on AWS.
Reliability, latency and player capacity
Price does not determine whether the world feels good to play. Compare the physical or virtual CPU performance, memory headroom, storage latency and network path to your players. A nearby Region can reduce latency even if its list price is marginally higher. Ask how the host defines a player limit: a marketing slot count is not the same as a guaranteed CPU or memory allocation.

For AWS, monitor the instance during the busiest simultaneous session and during saves. For a managed service, request performance details and an explanation of what happens when neighboring customers consume shared resources. In both cases, test the exact mods, crossplay configuration and client versions your group uses before making the world permanent.
Common failure modes and recovery
The bill is higher than expected
Check actual EC2 runtime first, then EBS volume size, snapshots, public IPv4, DNS, data transfer and taxes. Look for an instance that a schedule failed to stop, an old address left allocated, or snapshots retained beyond the intended seven-day window. Recalculate with current regional prices rather than relying on the historical examples.
Players cannot connect after a stop or restart
Confirm that the scheduled start completed, the Valheim process is running, the security group still permits the required traffic and the DNS record points to the current address. Check operating-system and game logs before changing multiple settings at once.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
An update breaks the world or a mod
Stop making changes to the live world, preserve the current files and restore the last known-good backup to a separate location. Verify game, mod and client versions, then test with a small group. Keep an export so migration to another host remains possible.
The server runs out of memory or storage
Use monitoring to distinguish memory pressure from a full EBS volume. Remove obsolete logs and backups only after confirming that required restore points are safe. Resize storage or the instance deliberately, recording the new recurring cost and any maintenance window.
A managed host cannot perform a restore
Ask support for the documented restore procedure and the location of downloadable backups. If the plan offers no usable export, treat that limitation as a migration risk and maintain an independent copy of the world whenever the terms allow it.
A decision checklist
- Estimate real weekly uptime, including unscheduled sessions.
- Choose the player Region based on latency first, then price.
- Price every AWS resource, not only EC2 compute.
- Value the hours you will spend on updates, security, monitoring and recovery.
- Require written details on managed-host hardware, backups, mods, crossplay, support and cancellation.
- Test start, stop, update and restore procedures before inviting the whole group.
- Keep a portable copy of the world and configuration.
- Review the bill and service terms after the first month and after any player-count change.
Final verdict
AWS can be the cheapest way to run a Valheim server for a technically capable owner whose group plays on a schedule and whose automation reliably stops the instance. The under-$2, under-$5 and under-$9 figures are 2022, 20-hours-per-week estimates, not guarantees, and related resources continue to cost money. For an always-on world or an owner who wants support instead of infrastructure work, a managed dedicated game-server plan can deliver better value despite a higher nominal fee. Make the choice from total cost, uptime, recovery quality and time required—not from the EC2 hourly number or a provider’s advertised monthly headline alone.
