When a signup form spots a likely typo in a familiar email-provider domain, suggest a correction—but let the user choose. A typo hint can prevent an address from being entered incorrectly; it cannot prove the user owns the mailbox. If email access matters for account use or recovery, confirm it with a link or code.
Why a typo suggestion is useful—and what it cannot do
An address such as “[email protected]” may be a typo, but it could also be intentional. A suggestion gives the user a quick way to fix a likely mistake without treating the form’s guess as fact. GOV.UK and the U.S. Web Design System both advise warning about likely misspellings while still allowing users to proceed: GOV.UK’s email-address pattern says to warn users but allow them to continue in case the address is genuine, and USWDS guidance takes the same general approach.

Keep three separate jobs distinct:
- Format checking catches values that do not resemble an email address.
- Typo detection identifies a possible error and offers an edit.
- Ownership verification checks whether the user can access the mailbox.
Neither a plausible format nor a likely correction establishes that an address exists or belongs to the person signing up. OWASP distinguishes validation from verification in its Email Validation and Verification Cheat Sheet.
Design the interaction as a suggestion, not an automatic correction
Leave the address the user entered visible and editable. If the detector identifies a likely typo, show the proposed version in plain language with two clear choices: use the suggested address or keep the original. Do not silently rewrite the field, make the original difficult to retain, or block submission solely because a domain is unfamiliar.

This preserves user control while making the common correction easy. It also avoids assuming that a provider list covers every valid domain or that the most likely match is what the person intended. GOV.UK recommends confirming the entered address back to users so they can review and change it; OWASP likewise recommends preserving the original input.
Build the email field with useful browser support
Use a visible label and briefly explain why the service asks for an email address. GOV.UK recommends an email field with type="email", autocomplete="email", and spellcheck="false". Allow paste and show enough of the address for users to review it.

The browser’s email input provides a basic format check, not a test of deliverability or mailbox ownership. MDN explains that <input type="email"> checks whether the value has a format that could be a legitimate email address; it does not establish that the address exists. See MDN’s email input reference.
Avoid trying to solve every edge case with a strict custom regular expression. OWASP warns that overly restrictive regex validation can reject valid addresses or behave inconsistently. Use broad, well-tested format validation, then handle likely provider typos as a separate, optional hint.

Choose how much correction and verification to add
| Approach | Implementation and user friction | False-positive and data considerations | Does it prove mailbox control? |
|---|---|---|---|
| No typo detection; send a confirmation email | Simplest to implement, but a user who mistypes the address may not receive the message and may need a recovery path. | No suggestion means no typo-match false positive; the service still handles the email address as signup data. | Yes, if the user completes the confirmation step. |
| Client-side suggestions for common provider typos | A focused addition to the signup form; the user can accept the proposed edit or keep the original. | Matching rules need maintenance, and an overly broad list can produce distracting or incorrect suggestions. The address is still handled by the signup form. | No. A suggestion is not verification. |
| Broader email-validation service | Can add checks beyond a short inline typo list, but introduces an external service and its implementation and operating costs. | Review what data is sent, how it is handled, and what checks the service actually performs. | Not by validation alone. Ownership requires a confirmation workflow. |
For many signup forms, a small set of high-confidence suggestions is a proportionate starting point. Broader validation may suit teams with needs beyond typo hints; Mailgun’s signup-error guidance discusses that service category, but a vendor is not required to offer an inline correction.
When to verify the address
If the account relies on email for activation, important notifications, or recovery, send a confirmation link or code and require the user to complete that step before relying on the address. OWASP recommends secure, single-use, time-limited tokens and advises against activating accounts before verification is complete. A typo suggestion can help the user enter the intended address; only the confirmation step establishes access to the mailbox.

Do not make duplicate entry the default
Requiring users to type an address twice adds effort and can reproduce the same mistake in both fields. USWDS advises against requiring re-entry unless there is a good reason. GOV.UK’s guidance instead emphasizes letting users review and change the address they entered. If a particular service has evidence that a second entry helps its users, treat it as a deliberate design choice rather than a blanket substitute for typo suggestions or ownership verification.

Measure whether the hint helps without overstating the result
The cited guidance does not establish a measured conversion lift or a specific reduction in support requests from adding typo correction. If you introduce the hint, assess it using your own signup data and user feedback. Check whether people accept suggestions, keep their original address, complete email verification, or need help after signup; interpret those outcomes in the context of your service rather than treating acceptance as proof that the original was wrong.
