Can you cascade windows in Windows 11?
There is no documented built-in Cascade windows command in Microsoft’s current Windows 11 taskbar and multitasking guidance. In particular, don’t rely on older instructions that say to right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Cascade windows: Microsoft’s current taskbar guidance describes Task view, not that command. This is a conclusion from the options Microsoft documents, rather than an explicit statement from Microsoft that it removed Cascade.

A user-submitted PowerToys feature request opened on February 20, 2024, also reports that its author could not find the earlier option in Windows 11 and asks for a similar feature. That is a dated user report, not an official Microsoft compatibility or removal notice. Read the PowerToys request.

Arrange open windows with Snap
Snap is the closest built-in choice when you want several windows arranged in defined areas of the screen. Microsoft describes Snap as a way to arrange open windows using a mouse, touch, or keyboard. Available layouts can vary with display size. Microsoft’s Snap guidance explains the options.

- Open the windows you want to arrange.
- Hover over a window’s Maximize button, or press Windows+Z, to see the available Snap layouts.
- Select a layout region for the current window.
- When Snap Assist shows other open windows, choose one to fill another available region. Repeat for any remaining spaces.
Snap a window by dragging or with the keyboard
Drag to an edge or corner
Drag a window to a screen edge or corner and release it when the Snap placement appears. If Snap Assist appears afterward, select another open window to place alongside it. This is useful when you want to position windows directly rather than choose a layout first. Microsoft’s Snap instructions cover mouse placement.
Use Windows+Arrow
Press Windows+Left Arrow or Windows+Right Arrow to snap a window to the corresponding side. Microsoft’s multitasking guidance also describes using the arrow keys to position windows. These shortcuts snap windows; they do not create a classic overlapping cascade. See Microsoft’s multitasking guidance.

Find a window with Task view
Task view is for locating and switching between windows or virtual desktops, not arranging windows in a cascade. Press Windows+Tab or select Task view on the taskbar to see open windows and desktops. Select a window thumbnail to bring it forward; Task view also lets you move apps between virtual desktops. Microsoft’s multitasking guide describes these features, and its taskbar guidance covers Task view.
