Martin Klíma, co-founder of Warhorse Studios, hopes Grand Theft Auto VI will sell strongly enough to give other publishers confidence to raise game prices. That is his view of the industry’s economics—not evidence that GTA 6 will trigger a wider price increase.
What did the Warhorse co-founder say?
In an interview reported by PC Gamer on October 1, 2026, Klíma argued that raising the per-unit price is one of the few remaining ways for publishers to increase revenue. “The last thing you can do is to increase the unit price,” he said, adding that he hopes GTA will “blaze the trail” and make it possible for other companies to raise their prices.

Klíma also said Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, are among the few companies that can afford or dare to raise game prices. He called an increase overdue and necessary for the business to survive. Those are his opinions, not a demonstrated conclusion about every publisher or a guarantee that higher prices would solve the industry’s financial problems.

As PC Gamer describes Klíma’s reasoning, development costs are climbing while the potential to grow audiences or extract more revenue from digital storefronts is limited. The article also places his comments against a post-pandemic industry period marked by layoffs and studio closures, after a temporary surge in demand. This is the context reported alongside his argument; it does not establish that any one factor caused those job cuts or closures.

- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
The underlying business question is whether charging more per copy can offset rising costs without pushing away enough buyers to undermine sales. A high-profile release could influence what publishers believe customers will accept, but its performance alone would not prove that a higher price works for games with different audiences, budgets, or sales patterns.
How much does GTA 6 cost, and when is it due?
As of October 3, 2026, Rockstar’s US store lists the standard edition at $79.99. That is a current US listing, not a worldwide price or a forecast for other publishers. Rockstar lists the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026, in its official announcement. Store prices and release details can change.

The $79.99 listing gives context to Klíma’s comments, but it does not mean GTA 6 has established a general $80 standard. Rockstar’s price applies to this listing; broader adoption by other publishers remains uncertain.

No. Rockstar says its boxed physical version contains a download code and does not include a disc. Buyers should treat it as a code-in-box package, not a disc edition. Rockstar’s store listing is for the Xbox version; the company’s announcement provides the format detail.

Will other studios raise game prices?
That has not been established. Klíma hopes GTA 6 will give other publishers cover to charge more, but no industry-wide response can be inferred from that hope or from Rockstar’s own price. Publishers make separate decisions, and this reporting does not show that a launch price will cause other studios to follow.
Customer willingness to pay is one potential constraint. Video Games Chronicle reported on October 2, 2026, that an unnamed recent survey found 62% of the most engaged video-game players no longer buy full-price releases and instead wait for discounts. The report does not identify the survey’s publisher, date, sample, geography, or methodology, so the figure should not be generalized to all players or treated as a precise measure of demand.
