To keep white sneaker soles looking clean, brush off loose dirt regularly, wash stuck-on grime with sneaker cleaner or mild soapy water, and wipe it away before it spreads. For a surface scuff, try an eraser after cleaning. Yellowing that remains may be a change in the sole material rather than dirt, so routine washing may not reverse it.
Clean white soles without spreading dirt
Use the shoe maker’s care instructions first: sole materials and finishes vary. For a routine clean, work on the sole rather than soaking the shoe, and keep dirty water away from the upper.

- Brush away loose debris. Use a dry brush to lift grit, especially from the outsole grooves. Adidas demonstrates a hard-bristle brush on the outsole of its example shoe; choose a brush appropriate for your own sole.
- Wash stuck-on dirt. Apply sneaker cleaner or soapy water with a suitable brush. Paul Green also suggests diluted dish soap as an alternative to shoe cleanser.
- Wipe as you work. Use a microfiber cloth or towel to remove loosened soil and foam rather than letting dirty liquid sit on the sole.
- Let the shoe dry. Avoid soaking the shoe or transferring grime to its upper.
Adidas’s guide describes outsole brushing, cleaner or soapy water, and microfiber wiping in its shoe-cleaning instructions. Paul Green also recommends regular dry brushing in its sole-care guidance.
Tell a scuff from yellowing
Surface marks
If a mark remains after washing, try an ordinary eraser or a purpose-made dirt eraser on the sole. Clean first, and use a light touch. A persistent mark may be embedded in or part of the material, not removable surface dirt.

Yellowing
Yellowing that does not lift with cleaning may reflect a change in the sole material. Paul Green attributes gradual yellowing partly to sunlight and oxygen reacting with plastic in the sole, and says embedded dirt can speed discoloration. That is the brand’s explanation; it should not be treated as a universal account for every rubber or foam formulation. Its care advice distinguishes this kind of discoloration from removable dirt.
Reduce the chances of yellowing
- Brush off coarse dirt regularly so it does not remain embedded in the sole.
- Clean grime before it builds up, using a suitable brush and cleaner or mild soapy water.
- Follow the shoe maker’s care instructions for the specific materials. Avoid assuming that advice for one rubber sole also applies to foam, translucent materials, or the shoe’s upper.
These steps help with dirt and routine care; they cannot guarantee that a sole will not yellow as its material ages.

Consider a restorer only for eligible yellowed rubber
Tarrago describes its Sneakers Sole Restorer as an oxygenated solution for white and translucent rubber midsoles. Its product sheet gives the following directions: wear protective gloves, apply the product with a paintbrush, cover the sneaker with transparent plastic wrap, expose it to direct sunlight for 2–6 hours, then remove it with a wet sponge; repeat if needed. The sheet also contains a separate “KEEP AWAY FROM SUNLIGHT” warning. Because those directions conflict, do not improvise or treat them as a general DIY recipe: check the current packaging and ask Tarrago for clarification if its instructions remain unclear. Be cautious with home remedies and chemicals
Brand advice conflicts: Clarks suggests baking soda and white vinegar for rubber soles, while Paul Green warns that baking powder, bleach, and toothpaste may discolor shoes, weaken material, or make it brittle. Neither set of guidance establishes that a home recipe will work safely on every sole. Prefer the shoe maker’s instructions and products labeled for the material; if trying a treatment, test a small, inconspicuous area first and stop if the surface changes.

Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or another cleaner; Clorox warns that dangerous fumes can form. Its guidance discusses 3% hydrogen peroxide as a spot treatment for light-colored fabric shoes, not as a universal treatment for rubber soles. Consult Clorox’s shoe-cleaning guidance and Clarks’ white-shoe care advice in context, rather than mixing methods across materials.
