To show thumbnails on Notion database cards, use a Gallery view and choose where each card gets its preview: the page cover, the page content, or an image in a Files & media property. A URL property is useful for storing a link, but Notion’s help documentation does not establish that it automatically fetches the website’s thumbnail.
Set up a Gallery view and choose its preview source
- Open the database. Add a view using the plus sign beside the database name or current view, then choose Gallery.
- Open the database settings menu at the top right and choose Layout.
- Open Card preview and select Page cover, Page content, or the Files & media property you want to use.
- Add an image for each database record using the source you selected. For Page content, put the desired image or video in the first block of that record’s page.
- Choose whether to turn Fit image on. When on, the whole image fits inside the card frame; when off, the image is cropped to fill it. Hover over the image and select Reposition to adjust its placement.
These are the card-preview options described in Notion’s Gallery view documentation. The image source and its framing are separate settings: choose the source first, then adjust fit and position.

Choose where to maintain each thumbnail
| Preview source | Where you maintain the image | Best fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Page cover | As the cover on each database record’s page. | You want to set a distinct cover for each record. |
| Page content | As the first block on each record’s page; an image or video in that position can appear as the preview. | You are comfortable keeping the desired preview first in the page content. |
| Files & media property | In an image-containing Files & media property, which you select as the card preview source. | You want images maintained in a dedicated database property. |
Choose based on where you want to manage the image and whether first-block ordering suits your records. For more control over the card composition, turn Fit image off to crop, then use Reposition.
Does Notion automatically fetch a website thumbnail from a URL?
Notion’s Gallery documentation lists page covers, page content, and Files & media properties as card preview sources. It does not establish that entering a website URL in a database property automatically retrieves the site’s thumbnail. For predictable card images, add the image yourself through one of the documented sources and select that source in the Gallery layout.

Notion’s Reading List guide describes using Web Clipper to save web pages and links to lists. Saving a link and assigning a Gallery card image are distinct steps; the guide does not say clipping automatically fills an image property or sets the card preview.

If you need to generate an image from a webpage before adding it to a Notion record, a screenshot API can return the page as an image. This does not change Notion’s Gallery settings: add the resulting image to a cover, the first page-content block, or a Files & media property, then select that preview source.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts one GET request with a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a thumbnail image, use a supported image format such as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webpSee the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting missing or poorly framed previews
- The card shows no image: Check that the Gallery’s Card preview setting points to the source where you added an image. A URL property alone is not a documented image source.
- Page content shows the wrong image: Move the desired image or video to the first block of the record’s page, since the first block is used for the preview.
- The image is cut off: Turn Fit image on to show the full image inside the card frame. If you prefer a filled frame, keep it off and use Reposition to adjust the crop.
- Web Clipper saved the link but not its image: Treat link capture and card-image assignment separately. Add an image through a cover, first content block, or Files & media property.
