Capture the price and the conditions around it
Go to the exact product page and record its full resolved URL. Before capturing, select the relevant product variant and note anything that changes the price, such as size, bundle, seller, membership status, coupon, delivery charge, or geographic setting. The page should show enough context to identify the product and retailer, the price and currency, and any promotion or qualification that applies.

Capture the full relevant page where practical. If it is long, use a verified full-page capture or several overlapping screenshots. A cropped image of the price may omit the product identity, seller, or conditions needed to understand it. If the browser image does not include the address bar, record the URL separately. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) describes web snapshots as copies of content at a particular time; its guidance is for records management, not a ruling on consumer evidence. Keep the capture itself unchanged. Record the capture date and time with a timezone or UTC offset in a separate note or log rather than adding a timestamp or annotations to the image. NARA defines a reliable website as one whose content can be trusted as a full and accurate representation of the transactions, activities, or facts to which it attests. That is a records-management definition, not a finding that any particular consumer screenshot is authentic or admissible.

Use a repeatable preservation workflow
- Open the exact listing. Select the relevant seller, variant, and offer conditions. Record the complete URL after the selections are made.
- Capture promptly. Include the product, retailer, price, currency, and applicable qualifications. Use overlapping images or a full-page capture for a long page, and check that the result is legible.
- Save the original file. Keep it in its native image format and do not overwrite it. If you need to crop, highlight, redact, or annotate, make a separate working copy.
- Write a capture note. Record the URL, date and time with timezone, who took the capture, method and browser if known, and a short note about the relevant offer or dispute.
- Collect related records. Keep the order confirmation, receipt, checkout total, retailer emails, and offer terms. They can document different parts of the event: what the page displayed, what you ordered, what you paid, and what the retailer represented.
- Verify the saved files. Open each image or PDF and check that the product, seller, price, currency, conditions, and any relevant URL or time context are readable and not cut off.
- Store a master and working copies separately. Keep a documented master in secure storage and make edits only to copies. A second secure copy, such as one on an external SSD, can reduce the risk of losing the file; the backup does not establish when the screenshot was taken or authenticate its contents.
- Keep the records through the dispute. There is no universal consumer retention period established here. If formal proceedings are contemplated, follow the instructions for the relevant forum and preserve the original files and related records.
A practical filename might be 2026-10-03T201844Z_retailer_product-price.png. Use a companion text note or log for the exact URL, timezone, capture method, and event details. This is an organizational convention, not a formal standard.

Keep a clear master and an audit trail
Preserve one documented, unaltered master and track where copies are stored or transferred. Official UK digital-imaging guidance for police and criminal-justice practitioners describes secure master copies and audit trails. Treat those principles as a useful preservation analogy, not as a rule that consumers must follow. A hash may be part of a careful file-handling record, but it cannot substitute for capture details or corroborating documents.
UK civil procedure guidance says that when altered copies are supplied, the original unaltered version should be preserved; it also addresses native-format files and metadata. Its requirements are jurisdiction-specific, not a universal consumer rule. UK Ministry of Justice, Practice Direction 31B – Disclosure of Electronic Documents. NARA likewise notes that preservation choices and capture frequency depend on operational requirements and risk.

Troubleshoot incomplete or unclear captures
- The seller or offer is unclear: Reopen the exact listing, select the relevant seller or variant, and capture the visible product identity and conditions. Put selection details in the companion note.
- The price is cut off or too small to read: Retake the image at a readable scale or use overlapping screenshots. Open the saved file and inspect it rather than assuming the capture succeeded.
- The page is long or content loads as you scroll: Use a verified full-page capture or multiple overlapping screenshots. Check that lazy-loaded content and lower-page terms actually appear in the saved result.
- The PDF is missing sections: Compare it with the live page and supplement it with screenshots. Print-to-PDF does not always capture the entire website.
- The file has been edited or annotated: Preserve the unaltered original if available, and make any redaction or annotation on a separate copy. Keep a note describing the relationship between versions.
- The screenshot lacks a visible URL or timestamp: Do not modify the image to add them. Record the exact URL and capture time with timezone in a separate note, and link that note to the filename.
- The retailer later disputes what the image proves: Preserve corroborating material such as order records, checkout totals, offer terms, and correspondence. The screenshot records visible content; it does not alone establish authorship, server state, or what transaction was completed.
Retain records according to the dispute and forum
No universal consumer retention duration is established by the sources cited here. Keep the files while the dispute remains active and follow any instructions from the relevant complaint process or court. In England and Wales, Practice Direction 31B says that once litigation is contemplated, legal representatives must notify clients to preserve disclosable documents. That is a jurisdiction-specific civil-procedure requirement, not a general rule for every shopper.

Does a screenshot prove what I paid?
Not by itself. It records visible page content; an order confirmation, receipt, or checkout record can help document the completed transaction.
