To capture a website in dark mode with LambdaTest, first activate the website’s own dark theme, then take a screenshot using LT Browser for responsive checks or SmartUI with Selenium for repeatable visual testing. A device or browser set to dark mode does not necessarily make a website dark: the site must implement and activate its own dark styling.
Make the website itself render in dark mode
Dark mode in a testing tool and dark mode on the page are different things. TestMu AI’s device documentation says, “Web applications must implement their own dark mode CSS for the setting to take effect beyond browser UI.” TestMu AI’s device dark mode guide describes a system-level mobile-device setting; it does not establish a universal dark-theme switch for LambdaTest web screenshots.

Before capturing, trigger the site’s theme using the method it supports: its visible theme control, a system preference it honors, or its own test setup. Check the page content itself—backgrounds, text, and components—not just the browser or testing interface. If the site has no dark theme, changing the test device’s appearance will not create one.

Capture a dark responsive screenshot in LT Browser
- Open the target page in LT Browser at the mobile viewport or device size you want to inspect.
- Activate the website’s dark theme through its own control or supported setup. Do not treat LT Browser’s interface dark appearance as proof that the page is dark.
- Check that the page has finished loading and that its content is visibly in the intended theme.
- Use LT Browser’s screenshot capture control. Choose a viewport capture for what is currently visible; use a full-page option if you need content beyond the viewport and the current interface offers it.
- Record the URL and viewport size alongside the image if you will compare it with another capture.
The LambdaTest guide describes LT Browser as an interactive mobile viewport testing tool with screenshot capture. Exact current button labels and capture options are not established here; check the current interface if they differ.
Capture repeatable screenshots with SmartUI and Selenium
For a visual regression workflow, use a Selenium test to open the same page, place it in the intended theme, and send a snapshot through the SmartUI SDK. Configure the desired browser and viewport in the SDK setup. The cited LambdaTest Java guide documents full-page capture as the web-viewport default in its described configuration, but SDK commands and defaults are version-sensitive; follow the current guide for runnable setup code.

Keep comparison inputs stable: use the same URL, theme state, page content, viewport, browser settings, and relevant timing. Otherwise, a difference may reflect changed content or environment rather than a visual regression. For meaningful visual comparisons, hold constant the URL, theme state, content, viewport, and relevant browser settings. Treat this as test-design guidance, not a guarantee that any single platform will eliminate all rendering differences.

Common problems and fixes
- The screenshot is light even though the tool is in dark appearance. Activate the website’s theme. Tool chrome or device settings do not guarantee dark page styling.
- Only some parts of the page are dark. The site may have incomplete theme styling or may require a particular theme control, preference, or test setup. Verify the page state before capture.
- The result is not mobile-sized. Set the target viewport/device in LT Browser or configure the viewport in the automated workflow before capturing.
- A comparison reports changes on an otherwise unchanged page. Check that the captures use the same URL, theme, content, viewport, browser, and relevant settings; uncontrolled inputs can produce legitimate image differences.
- Your SmartUI snapshot does not match the expected page length. Confirm whether the current SDK configuration captures the viewport or full page. The cited Java guide documents full-page as its web-viewport default, but defaults can vary by version.
- An older API recipe or interface instruction fails. The cited Screenshot API index is an old crawl and does not establish current endpoints, authentication, or schema. Verify those details in current LambdaTest API documentation before implementing an integration.

No. The website must implement and activate its own dark styling; the system setting may affect browser UI without changing page content.
