To capture a website from an MCP-capable coding agent, connect the agent to a browser MCP server, navigate to the page, and call its screenshot tool. With Playwright MCP, use browser_take_screenshot for a viewport, selected element, or full page. To save a PDF, start the server with its PDF capability enabled and call browser_pdf_save. Give files explicit names when you need predictable paths.
What you need before capturing a page
An MCP server exposes tools that a compatible coding agent can call. Playwright MCP is one documented local option: it gives an agent browser navigation and capture tools. The exact place to configure a server depends on the MCP client, so use that client’s instructions alongside the Playwright MCP getting-started guide.

In the MCP client configuration, add a server connection to http://localhost:8931/mcp. The location and format of that configuration are client-specific; follow the agent’s current setup instructions rather than assuming one universal config file. The getting-started guide describes HTTP sessions with a five-second heartbeat timeout and a setting to change or disable that heartbeat if a client or proxy does not answer server pings. If the connection drops or appears idle, check the guide’s current heartbeat configuration.

Once connected, ask the agent to open the target URL and wait for the page to be ready for your intended capture. For visual review, request a screenshot. If you need to identify controls or interact with the page, ask for an accessibility snapshot and use its references instead of trying to infer click targets from pixels.
Choose the screenshot mode that fits the task

The Playwright screenshot tool reference documents browser_take_screenshot, which supports a filename and PNG, JPEG, or WebP output. PNG is the documented default unless another format is inferred from the filename extension or explicitly selected. Choose CSS-pixel scale for dimensions aligned with CSS coordinates; choose device scale when you need output at device-pixel dimensions. Positions in a device-scale image are not CSS-pixel click coordinates.
A screenshot is visual evidence, not a substitute for page structure. Playwright recommends using browser_snapshot to obtain references for interaction; screenshots are for looking at, not acting on. See the snapshot documentation when the agent needs to inspect structure or locate controls.

Capture and name a screenshot
- Ask the agent to navigate to the complete target URL and wait for the page to load to the state you want to document.
- Choose viewport, element, or full-page mode. If capturing an element, identify the target from the page structure; do not also request full-page mode.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotwith a descriptive filename and the intended image type. For example, ask: “Save a full-page PNG screenshot of the current page asartifacts/pricing-page.png.” Adapt the mode and filename to your task. - Check the tool response and the specified output location. Without a filename, the image is also returned inline in the tool response, and the saved output uses a timestamped name.
Relative filenames resolve against the workspace root. An explicit project-relative path makes the artifact easier for both the agent and developer to locate. The tool reference documents its own output behavior; do not assume the MCP server and Playwright CLI share the same default directory or naming convention.
Save a webpage as a PDF
PDF export is not necessarily available in every Playwright MCP setup. Start the server with the PDF capability enabled, for example:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931 --caps=pdf
Then ask the agent to navigate to the page and call browser_pdf_save, supplying a filename such as artifacts/page.pdf. The filename is optional; without one, the tool documents a timestamped default in its output directory. Consult the capabilities reference for how PDF is enabled and how capability names can be combined. The MCP introduction lists PDF export among available tools, but actual exposure depends on server configuration.

The Playwright CLI is a separate route, documented with playwright-cli pdf and playwright-cli pdf --filename=page.pdf. Its commands and output handling are not interchangeable assumptions for the MCP server; use the corresponding interface’s documentation: CLI screenshots and PDF commands.

These are different deployment choices, not equivalent setup steps. Playwright MCP gives developers a configurable browser-automation workflow in their development environment. Capture documents a hosted remote MCP endpoint for supported clients and bearer-token authentication. Capture’s documentation describes screenshots, PDFs, content extraction, and interactive browser sessions; consult its MCP integration documentation for connection and authentication details.

The agent cannot connect to the MCP server
- Confirm the server process is running and the client endpoint matches it: the documented example uses
http://localhost:8931/mcp. - Check that the MCP configuration is in the location and format required by your specific client.
- If an HTTP session is timing out, review the Playwright guide’s heartbeat setting; its documented default is a five-second heartbeat timeout.
The screenshot tool is missing
Check that the client is connected to Playwright MCP and that its tools are exposed to the agent. A tool name or availability may differ if you are using a different server or a client-specific integration.

The PDF tool is missing
Start Playwright MCP with the PDF capability enabled, such as --caps=pdf, then reconnect the client if necessary. PDF availability depends on the server’s configured capabilities.
The output file is hard to find
Supply an explicit filename, preferably a project-relative path, and check the workspace root and the chosen interface’s output behavior. When no filename is given, MCP screenshot and PDF tools document timestamped output names; CLI output handling has its own documentation.

Use CSS-pixel scale when matching browser CSS coordinates. Device scale creates device-pixel dimensions, so do not use its pixel positions as CSS click coordinates. For interacting with the page, request an accessibility snapshot and use its references rather than clicking based on screenshot pixels.
The full-page request fails with an element target
Full-page capture cannot be combined with an element target. Choose one mode: the entire scrollable document, or the selected region.

Can a coding agent use a screenshot to click the right control?
It can inspect visual appearance, but Playwright recommends using browser_snapshot for structured page information and interaction references.
Can I use Playwright MCP without enabling PDF support?
Yes for screenshot capture; PDF export is a capability-controlled tool and requires the server to expose PDF support.
