Use Playwright to capture a trading dashboard as a viewport screenshot, a single chart or panel, a full-page image, or a PDF. The key choices are what to include and, for PDFs, whether to render print or screen styling. Make sure the dashboard has reached the state you need before saving: the file records what the browser rendered at capture time, not whether the market data is accurate or current.
Choose what the capture needs to show
Playwright supports three useful screenshot scopes: the visible browser viewport, a selected element such as a chart panel, and the full scrollable page. For PDFs, decide whether the result should follow the page’s print layout or preserve its screen styling.

| Need | Capture choice | What it preserves |
|---|---|---|
| Save the current dashboard view | Viewport screenshot | What is visible at the chosen browser size. |
| Keep one chart or panel | Element screenshot | The selected page element, rather than the full layout. |
| Include content below the fold | Full-page screenshot | The full scrollable page in one tall image. |
| Create a document for printing or sharing | The page rendered using print CSS by default, or screen styling if screen media is emulated first. |
Playwright describes a full-page screenshot as capturing the “full scrollable page” as if it were a very tall screen. See the Playwright Screenshots documentation for the available scopes and image options.
Capture a trading dashboard with Playwright
The example below uses Node.js and Playwright’s Page API. Install Playwright in your project, save the code as capture-dashboard.js, replace the URL with your dashboard URL, and run it with Node. The dashboard must be reachable in the browser context you use; authentication and any application-specific setup are not configured by this example.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com/trading-dashboard', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
});
// Choose one screenshot option:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png' });
// await page.screenshot({ path: 'chart.png', fullPage: true });
// await page.locator('.chart-panel').screenshot({ path: 'chart-panel.png' });
// For a PDF, use this instead of (or in addition to) the image captures:
// await page.pdf({ path: 'dashboard.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Replace .chart-panel with a CSS selector that identifies the element you want. Check the saved file: an incorrect or non-unique selector may target the wrong part of the page or fail to locate an element. Playwright’s Page API documentation covers navigation, screenshot, and PDF methods.
Set the browser size and image output
The viewport dimensions determine how much of the dashboard is visible in a viewport capture and can also affect responsive layouts. Use a size that matches the view you want to preserve. Playwright’s screenshot options let you set the output path and image type, and control pixel scaling. Choose the output format and scale for the image’s intended use: a report, a page preview, or a detailed chart. The screenshot guide distinguishes CSS-pixel output from device-pixel output; inspect the saved dimensions if the image will be placed at a specific size.
Capture one chart or the whole page
For a focused chart image, call screenshot() on a locator for the chart or panel. For content that extends below the viewport, set fullPage: true on page.screenshot(). A full-page image can be very tall; use an element capture when a single chart is the actual deliverable rather than the entire dashboard.

page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default. That means the PDF can differ from the interactive dashboard: the page’s print styles and page dimensions affect the result. If you want screen media styling instead, emulate it before generating the PDF:

await page.pdf({ path: 'dashboard-screen-style.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
Check the PDF’s page breaks, dimensions, backgrounds, and visibility of charts before relying on it. The method produces a PDF of the rendered page; the official API documentation does not prescribe trading-dashboard-specific handling for live charts or authenticated financial data.
Make the dashboard state reproducible
A capture is only useful as a record if the page shows the state you intend to preserve. Trading applications may render data asynchronously, animate charts, or retain user-selected filters. There is no universal Playwright signal that guarantees a trading chart is complete, so validate the right wait condition for your application rather than treating navigation completion as proof that every chart is ready.
- Open the intended dashboard and set the symbol, timeframe, filters, and layout you need.
- Wait for the application-specific chart or data indicator to show that the relevant content has rendered. If available, use a selector or application state that identifies readiness; a fixed delay alone may be unreliable.
- Capture the image or PDF at the intended viewport and review the saved output for missing data, loading indicators, clipped panels, or unexpected page breaks.
- Record relevant context alongside the file when it matters, such as the symbol, timeframe, and capture time. A screenshot records a rendered view; it does not independently verify the timeliness or accuracy of market data.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its API can remove cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can also be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot is blank or shows a loading state
Navigation finishing does not establish that a chart’s data has rendered. Add a wait for an application-specific ready selector or state, then inspect the saved image. Avoid assuming one fixed delay will work for every load.
The chart selector is not found
Confirm the selector against the rendered page and make sure the chart exists in the page context you captured. If the application creates the chart after navigation, wait for the element before calling its screenshot method.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The PDF looks different from the browser
PDF generation uses print CSS by default. Review the dashboard’s print styles and PDF page dimensions; if the desired result is screen styling, call page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) before page.pdf().
The full-page screenshot is unwieldy
Full-page capture includes the full scrollable page and can create a very tall image. Use an element capture for a specific chart, or capture a viewport if only the visible dashboard area matters.

Authentication or financial data is missing
This workflow does not configure login or establish a universal method for handling authenticated data. Set up the appropriate browser context for your application and verify that the intended account, symbol, and data are visible before capture. Treat the output as a record of the rendered page, not validation of the underlying data.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Choose the smallest capture scope that meets the need: one element for a chart, viewport for the current view, or full page for below-the-fold content.
- Large full-page images and PDFs may take longer to render than a viewport image; review output size and readability for the intended use.
- Waiting for an application-specific chart-ready condition can improve consistency, but the condition must be validated against the dashboard. Playwright’s official documentation does not define a universal signal for trading data completion.
- Playwright is a browser automation approach that you run in your own environment. The cited documentation does not establish a standard cost, runtime, or authentication recipe for every dashboard.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a dashboard screenshot prove the displayed price was current?
No. It records the browser’s rendered view at capture time and does not independently verify market-data accuracy or timeliness.
Can I save only a chart instead of the whole dashboard?
Yes. Use Playwright’s locator screenshot method with a selector for the chart or panel.
