For stable visual regression tests, control the browser environment, put the page in a known application state, and use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() assertion. It waits for consecutive screenshots to match before comparing them with a baseline, but it cannot make changing application data or JavaScript-driven motion deterministic for you.
Why screenshots change when the interface has not
A screenshot is the output of both your application and its rendering environment. Playwright identifies the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that can affect rendering. Its guidance is to generate and compare baselines in the same environment when consistency matters. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation also advises keeping those environments aligned.

Fonts and rendering can differ across browser and platform combinations. If your project deliberately tests different browsers or operating systems, treat each rendering target as its own baseline set rather than comparing different targets against one image.

Pin the test environment
Use the same browser project and host or container image when you create reference images and when CI compares them. Keep browser version, operating system, and relevant settings consistent. For multiple targets, define separate projects and let each target have its own snapshots.
Reach the intended application state
Navigate and interact with the page through the test, then wait for conditions that represent the state you actually want to verify. For example, wait for a page-specific heading, loaded data, or a completed interaction before taking the screenshot. A navigation event alone may occur before asynchronous content has settled.
Playwright’s screenshot assertion retries until two consecutive screenshots are identical, which helps with transient rendering changes. That retry does not guarantee that changing content, timers, live data, or JavaScript-driven animation will settle into the correct test state. Make those conditions deterministic in the test or application setup.
Choose capture geometry and scale intentionally
Use a viewport screenshot when the contract is what users see within a particular viewport. Use full-page capture only when the entire scrollable layout is part of the behavior under test. Configure viewport and project coverage deliberately, and keep screenshot scale consistent across a baseline set. Playwright’s assertion defaults to CSS-pixel scale; device-pixel output can be larger in high-DPI contexts. See the screenshot assertion options for the available controls.

Use the screenshot assertion
A minimal test looks like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('landing page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Welcome' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png');
});
Replace the URL and readiness assertion with your application’s route and meaningful ready-state condition. On the first run, Playwright creates a reference image; later runs compare against it. Inspect a newly created baseline before treating it as the expected appearance.
Control motion and volatile content
Keep the default animation and caret behavior unless the test needs otherwise
Playwright screenshot assertions disable CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations by default. Finite animations are fast-forwarded, while infinite animations are temporarily canceled at their initial state. The assertion also hides the caret by default. These defaults reduce incidental variation; change them only when the rendered motion or caret is specifically part of the visual contract. Playwright documents screenshot assertion behavior and options.
CSS controls do not automatically stop every animation implemented in JavaScript. If JavaScript updates an animated value, pause or control it in the test or application fixture. Chromatic likewise documents pausing CSS motion, video, and GIF content, while JavaScript-driven animation must be paused by the test author. Chromatic’s animation guidance describes its approach.

Mask or hide only what is intentionally outside the contract
Use Playwright’s locator mask option for unstable regions, or a screenshot-only stylesheet through stylePath to hide or alter elements. These mechanisms are useful for content such as a deliberately variable timestamp when that content is not what the test should evaluate. Keep the excluded area narrow: masking a large region can hide a genuine layout or styling regression. Details are in Playwright’s screenshot options.

- Create a baseline: run the relevant Playwright test in the pinned target environment and inspect the generated image.
- Commit references: keep accepted snapshots in version control so changes can be reviewed alongside the code.
- Review a diff: when a test fails, inspect the actual image and diff before deciding whether the change is a bug, environmental drift, or an intended design update.
- Update intentionally: after approving a visual change, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsand review the updated files before committing.
Pixel tolerances can accommodate understood rendering noise, but they are not a substitute for a stable environment and deterministic state. Playwright’s guidance covers committing and updating snapshots.

Troubleshoot unstable visual tests
- The diff changes across local runs and CI: compare the host or container image, browser version, settings, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same target environment.
- Content appears or moves after navigation: wait for an application-specific ready state before the screenshot. The assertion’s retry for matching consecutive images does not replace waiting for the intended data or interaction.
- Only animated areas differ: rely on Playwright’s default CSS and Web Animations handling where appropriate. For JavaScript-driven motion, pause it in the test; mask only if the region is genuinely outside the test contract.
- The page looks right but the diff is large: verify viewport dimensions and screenshot scale match the baseline set. A switch between CSS-pixel and device-pixel output changes screenshot geometry.
- A baseline is missing: treat the generated image as a candidate reference, inspect it, and commit it only after confirming it represents the intended UI.
- A baseline update hides a defect: do not update snapshots merely to clear a failure. Review the diff and establish whether the design change was intended first.

If you need a clean capture rather than a repository-managed visual baseline, ScreenshotNeo takes screenshots through a single API request. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP capture of the target page:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can each be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
