The browser runs on a Grid machine, so plan how the resulting image reaches your client or CI artifacts; a path on the remote machine is not automatically a path on your local machine.
Start Selenium Grid and identify its URL
Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands from a client to remote browser instances. It supports parallel execution and testing across browsers and platforms. For a local, single-machine example, Standalone mode runs Grid components in one process. Selenium’s getting-started guide lists Java 11 or newer, a browser, a browser driver, and the Selenium Server JAR as prerequisites; it also describes using Selenium Manager to configure drivers when enabled. - Start a Standalone server using the Selenium Server JAR. The guide’s local endpoint is
http://localhost:4444. - For a distributed or hosted Grid, use the URL reachable from your test client instead. Confirm the endpoint and that a node can launch Chrome.
- Keep the client and browser locations distinct: the client sends commands to Grid, while the browser and its driver run on the remote machine.
The Selenium Server version is time-sensitive. Selenium’s downloads page listed 4.49.0 as stable, released September 9, 2026, when checked; consult Selenium Downloads for the version available when you install.

Create a remote headless Chrome session
Pass both the Grid URL and Chrome options to RemoteWebDriver. Selenium’s Chrome guide lists --headless=new among commonly used arguments and says Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. The Python example below uses the documented RemoteWebDriver and screenshot APIs; adjust the endpoint to your deployment.

driver.quit()For a remote Grid, replace http://localhost:4444 with its reachable URL. The chosen viewport is an example, not a required dimension. Set it deliberately when layout or image dimensions matter. Selenium’s Chrome-specific functionality and Remote WebDriver guides cover Chrome options and remote session setup.
Wait for the right state, then capture
A screenshot records what the browser has rendered when the command runs. A successful navigation command does not necessarily mean that asynchronous content, images, or an application-specific state is ready. Wait for the condition your test actually needs before capturing; the right condition depends on the page and test.

driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png") saves the current window as a PNG. Selenium’s Python API says the filename should be a full path ending in .png and the method returns False if an I/O error occurs. Check the return value if you need to fail the test explicitly on a save error:

The documented screenshot is best-effort, so do not assume every binding and browser captures the entire scrollable page. For an element-focused image, use the binding’s element screenshot API where supported rather than capturing the window and cropping afterward. Get the screenshot from the remote machine to your client
In the example, save_screenshot writes through the active WebDriver session. Because the browser and driver are remote, do not assume that the written path is shared with the test client or CI workspace. The cited Selenium documentation establishes the remote-machine boundary but does not specify one universal file-transfer mechanism for every Grid provider.
- Use your platform’s artifact mechanism: configure the Grid host, node, or CI environment to publish the screenshot through its supported artifact storage or transfer process.
- Write on the client: obtain screenshot bytes or base64 through the client binding, decode if needed, and save the data in the client process or upload it to your artifact store.
- Verify the destination: after capture, check that the file exists where the CI job expects it and that the artifact is actually uploaded. A successful browser command alone does not establish that a local artifact was created.
Choose the transfer path for your Grid or CI provider; it cannot be inferred from a local Standalone example.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Remote session cannot be created: check that
command_executorpoints to the reachable Grid endpoint, that the Grid is accepting sessions, and that a node can launch the requested Chrome configuration. A remote session needs the Grid address and browser options. - Chrome fails to start or reports a driver error: align the Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions. Selenium Manager can configure drivers in supported setups, but confirm it is enabled and applicable to your Grid deployment; do not assume a client-side setting configures a separately managed node.
- The screenshot is missing from the local workspace: the browser wrote on a remote machine. Use the Grid or CI artifact mechanism, or retrieve image data through the client and save it there.
- The image is blank or incomplete: wait for an application-specific readiness condition before capture. Check that navigation reached the expected page and that asynchronously loaded content has appeared.
- The image has the wrong dimensions or layout: set the browser window size explicitly before navigation or capture, and confirm the viewport is appropriate for the responsive layout under test.
- You need only a component: use an element screenshot method supported by your binding and target browser.
- The PNG save reports failure: check the destination path and write permissions in the process or machine handling the save. In Python, inspect the boolean returned by
save_screenshot.
