As a baseline, a continuous 10 Mbps 1080p30 H.264 feed sends about 3.24 TB of data in a 30-day month before overhead. A low headline VPS price does not establish that the plan includes enough transfer for that workload.

This assumes a 30-day month and converts megabits to decimal terabytes. It is an arithmetic estimate, not a provider’s billable-usage measurement. Add headroom for protocol overhead, reconnects, and any other traffic generated by the server.

YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. Use the recommendation for the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to send, rather than choosing a bitrate based on the VPS’s advertised transfer quota. The VPS sends one feed to YouTube; YouTube handles delivery to viewers, so do not multiply VPS outbound traffic by audience size. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance also recommends constant bitrate and a 2-second keyframe interval.
How to estimate an Indian VPS bill with GST
- Choose the stream settings. Select resolution, frame rate, and codec, then use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as the input. YouTube recommends RTMPS for a protected connection. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers recommended settings.
- Calculate continuous transfer. Apply the formula above for a 30-day month, then allow for overhead, reconnects, and other server traffic.
- Check the allowance for the exact VPS region and plan. Compare the workload with that plan’s applicable quota, not just the provider’s headline price or a quota shown for a different region.
- Check overage charges and other metered usage. Establish what happens if the stream exceeds its allowance and whether any other server usage is billed separately.
- Add the tax shown for your account at checkout or on the invoice. Provider, customer location, and account circumstances can affect the actual tax treatment.
The resulting figure is a useful estimate only when the plan’s regional quota, overage terms, and actual tax treatment are known. The published examples below do not establish an all-in INR bill for a particular stream and customer profile.
What AWS Lightsail’s published price does—and does not—tell you
AWS Lightsail’s published Linux bundles start at $5 per month. Its general price table lists 1 TB of transfer for that tier and 3 TB for the $12 tier. AWS says Mumbai-region bundles include half the transfer allowance displayed in the bundles. Therefore, the headline starting price and general quota do not show that a low-tier Mumbai VPS can carry a continuous 1080p30 feed, which is estimated at about 3.24 TB per 30 days before overhead. How GST applies to AWS India cloud services
AWS says GST applies to cloud services AWS India sells to customers in India. Its guidance describes 9% CGST plus 9% SGST for customers located in Delhi, and 18% IGST for customers elsewhere in India. This is AWS’s explanation of its own tax treatment, not a guarantee of how every provider will invoice every account. For a reliable estimate, use the provider’s checkout or invoice treatment for your own account rather than applying AWS’s description to another VPS provider or assuming a displayed base price already includes GST.

Server suitability is more than transfer quota
A plan with sufficient data transfer can still fail to sustain a stream. The VPS must have enough CPU capacity to encode the selected video in real time if it is encoding, and its route to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint must be stable. You also need monitoring and a way to restart the stream if the encoder or connection stops. YouTube advises testing encoder settings and monitoring stream health. Common cost-estimate mistakes
- Using the wrong regional quota: a provider’s general bundle table may not reflect the allowance for its India region; AWS says Mumbai allowances are half the displayed bundle transfer amounts.
- Ignoring the stream bitrate: a continuous feed’s data use scales with bitrate, so a 10 Mbps workload cannot be priced from a low-bandwidth use case.
- Treating payload arithmetic as the invoice total: the estimate excludes overhead, reconnects, overage, other server traffic, and tax.
- Assuming a tax treatment applies to every provider: AWS’s India GST explanation is specific to AWS services and does not establish another seller’s invoice treatment.
- Assuming bandwidth guarantees a stable stream: CPU capacity, network route, monitoring, and recovery setup also matter.
