Start your Angular app, open its reachable URL in a Playwright page, then call page.screenshot(). Use fullPage: true for the full scrollable document or a locator’s screenshot() method to capture one component. This guide covers saving images and setting up repeatable visual checks.
1. Start Angular and confirm its URL
Run the project’s configured serve command, commonly ng serve. Angular CLI serves the application and rebuilds it when files change. The usual local URL is http://localhost:4200, but use the URL and port printed by the CLI or configured for your project. The Playwright process must be able to reach that address.

2. Install and run a basic Playwright capture
In a project using Playwright Test, create a test such as tests/angular-screenshot.spec.ts. Ensure the destination directory exists before the test runs:

});Run it with your project’s Playwright Test command, commonly npx playwright test. The path option writes the image to disk; without a path, page.screenshot() returns a buffer that your code can save or process. If the app is not running, configure a web server in Playwright Test or start Angular separately before running the test.

3. Choose what to capture

For a component-level image, choose a locator that identifies the intended element reliably. Prefer user-facing roles or labels, or an explicit test ID, to long brittle CSS or XPath chains. See the Locator API and locator guidance.

Playwright’s screenshot APIs provide options including output path, image type, full-page capture, clipping, scale and animation handling. Select the output format and capture area to suit the consumer: for example, a viewport image for a focused UI check or a full-page image for a page overview. CSS-pixel scale can produce smaller output on high-DPI systems; device-pixel scale captures device pixels. Check the current Page API and Locator API for exact option names and availability in your installed version.

For a stable capture, navigate to the intended route and wait for the UI state you need before taking the image. Angular pages may render asynchronous data or images after initial navigation; use an appropriate locator or app-specific readiness signal rather than assuming navigation alone means every visual element is ready. Avoid arbitrary delays where a meaningful condition is available.
5. Use screenshot assertions for visual regression
If the goal is to detect visual changes rather than simply save an image, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion:

});The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing against the expected image. It belongs to Playwright Test, not the standalone page screenshot call. See the visual comparisons guide and page assertions API.
Rendering may vary by operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in a consistent environment; otherwise, environmental differences can create changes unrelated to your Angular code.

6. Keep Angular testing paths distinct
Angular’s end-to-end guide documents Playwright integration through ng add playwright-ng-schematics, followed by configured end-to-end tests run with ng e2e. Confirm the commands and project configuration for your Angular version.
Angular’s testing overview also describes a default Vitest setup and optional browser testing with @vitest/browser-playwright. That configures browser-mode unit tests; it is distinct from an end-to-end workflow that navigates the running app and captures a page. Check your project’s angular.json and Angular’s current end-to-end testing guide and testing overview.
7. Troubleshoot common capture problems
- Navigation fails or times out: confirm Angular is serving, use the exact URL and port printed by the CLI, and ensure the machine running Playwright can reach it. A container or remote runner may not share the same localhost as your development machine.
- The file is missing: check the test’s working directory and create the parent directory named in
pathbefore saving the screenshot. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: verify that the route loads and that the content has reached the intended state. Wait for a relevant element or app readiness signal before capture.
- The element screenshot fails: check that the locator matches the intended element and that it is present and visible. Prefer a stable role, label or test ID rather than a fragile selector chain.
- Full-page capture misses expected content: check whether that content is actually rendered in the document and whether it depends on scrolling, delayed data or lazy loading; wait for the relevant state before capturing.
- Visual tests differ on another machine: run baseline creation and comparisons with consistent operating system and browser conditions, since rendering can vary across environments.
