Playwright supports this workflow through its storage-state and screenshot APIs. The saved state is a credential: protect it, verify that the session still works, and treat the scheduler as best-effort unless its timing guarantees meet your needs.
How the workflow works
A recurring capture has two separate jobs: authenticate the browser and run the capture on a schedule. In a setup run, sign in through the site’s supported login flow and save the resulting browser state. In each scheduled run, create a browser context from that state, visit the target page, verify that authentication succeeded, then capture and store the image.

Use Playwright’s documented authentication and storage-state workflow and its screenshot API. The exact state a site needs depends on its authentication implementation; a copied cookie string is not necessarily enough.

Set up Playwright authentication state
Install the browser automation dependencies

Sign in and save state
Create a one-time setup script that performs the site’s supported login flow, waits for a reliable indication of successful sign-in, and writes storage state. Adapt the selectors, login URL and credentials to the target application:

});Playwright’s examples also support authentication through an API when the application provides a suitable login endpoint. Whichever route you use, wait for a dependable post-login condition before saving; merely clicking a button does not prove that authentication finished.
Protect the state file
Storage state can contain cookies and headers that let someone impersonate the account. Store it in a protected location, keep it out of source control, do not print its contents, and restrict access to any backup or CI artifact. A repository-level ignore rule can help prevent accidental commits:

playwright/.auth/Restrict access to the login credentials and state file to the job that needs them. Review logs, traces, reports and uploaded artifacts for sensitive content before enabling broad access or long retention.
Capture the authenticated page in each run
Load the saved state when creating a new browser context. Before capturing, check for an authenticated-page condition and fail clearly if the site has redirected to sign-in or the expected UI is absent.

});Use fullPage: true when the whole document should be captured; omit it for a viewport capture. Playwright’s screenshot API also documents image options such as clipping and output format. Choose an output location with appropriate access controls because screenshots may expose the same private information as the page itself.

Playwright storage state can cover cookies, local storage, IndexedDB and virtual WebAuthn credentials in documented scenarios. It does not automatically persist sessionStorage through the standard storage-state API. If the site depends on session storage, follow Playwright’s separate save-and-restore approach for it, and verify the result against the target site rather than assuming the cookie jar alone is sufficient.

Authentication state is application-specific. A site may also require a fresh login after expiry, a changed login flow, or an additional verification step. No generic saved-state file can guarantee continued access to every site.
Schedule the capture with GitHub Actions
A scheduled workflow can run the capture script on GitHub Actions. Put the workflow on the repository’s default branch and provide credentials and authenticated state through an appropriately protected mechanism rather than committing them as files. The example below assumes your runner can access the state file securely at the specified path and that the scripts and browser dependency are installed in the project.

retention-days: 7Store the serialized state as a protected secret only if that fits your organization’s secret-size and handling policies; otherwise use a protected runtime or secret-storage mechanism appropriate to the runner. Restrict artifact access and retention. Playwright warns that CI traces, reports and logs can contain credentials, access tokens, test source or application source. See its CI guidance.

GitHub says scheduled runs normally use UTC and can be delayed or dropped during high load; public-repository schedules may be disabled after 60 days without repository activity. Check GitHub’s current schedule-event documentation and add monitoring or choose a runner with suitable guarantees if missed or late captures are unacceptable.

Make the job observable and recoverable
- Check authentication: make the script fail if it sees the login page or cannot find a known authenticated element. Do not silently save a screenshot of the sign-in screen as a successful capture.
- Record safe diagnostics: log the run time, target URL and failure category, but never log passwords, cookies, authorization headers or storage-state contents.
- Control output access: screenshots, traces and reports can include private page data. Limit who can view them and how long they are retained.
- Plan state refresh: when the session expires or login changes, rerun the setup flow and replace the state securely. If login needs MFA or human interaction, determine an approved refresh process for that site rather than trying to bypass its controls.
- Decide what a missed run means: GitHub’s schedule trigger is not an exact-time delivery guarantee. Monitor the artifact or job outcome if the screenshot is operationally important.
Troubleshooting common failures
The run shows the login page
The session may have expired, the saved state may be incomplete, or the site may rely on storage not restored by the standard state file. Reauthenticate, save a fresh state, and verify whether the target uses session storage or another documented mechanism. Add an explicit post-login assertion so this failure is visible.
The state file is missing or unreadable
Check that the setup step writes the file to the exact path used by storageState, that the scheduled job receives it securely, and that the directory exists. Avoid relying on a file from a prior ephemeral runner unless your workflow explicitly preserves it through a protected channel.
The script times out waiting for a selector
The selector may not match the current page, the login may not have completed, or the page may have changed. Confirm the selector against the real authenticated UI and wait for a stable condition. Keep a failure screenshot or trace only if it can be stored with appropriate privacy controls.
No screenshot appears despite a successful run
Check the output path, ensure the directory exists, and verify that the artifact-upload step points to the same filename. Treat upload failure separately from capture failure so the workflow does not report a delivered image when it only created one locally.

The schedule runs late or not at all
Check the workflow’s default-branch placement and GitHub Actions run history. Load-related delays or dropped schedule events are documented behavior; use monitoring and an execution service with appropriate guarantees when timing is critical.
