How to Add a Delay Before an Abstract Screenshot API Capture

Abstract’s Screenshot API supports a fixed capture delay. The available reference names the parameter, gives a 1,000-millisecond example, and leaves important limits and readiness behavior unspecified.

To wait before an Abstract Screenshot API capture, use the optional delay query parameter. The available API reference describes its value in milliseconds and gives 1000 as an example— a one-second wait. That fixed wait adds time before capture; it does not, by itself, guarantee that a page’s scripts or asynchronous content have finished loading.

Set the delay in milliseconds

Abstract describes its Website Screenshot API as a REST service that turns a URL into an image, and its product page advertises capture delays and custom timing. A generated API reference maintained by APIs.io names the optional parameter delay, describes it as the number of milliseconds to wait before taking the screenshot, and shows 1000 as an example.

For example, the parameter fragment is &delay=1000. Add it to a request that already includes the API key and target URL, following the request format in the API documentation you are using. This fragment illustrates the parameter; it is not a tested, complete request.

Choose a wait that fits the page

The value is expressed in milliseconds: 1000 represents one second. Choose a wait based on how long the page’s content typically takes to appear, then inspect the resulting capture and adjust if needed. A longer fixed wait also means a longer request, and the available sources do not specify a maximum or default value.

A delay is a timer, not proof of readiness. The accessible sources do not establish that Abstract’s API can wait for a particular CSS selector, a network-idle condition, or an application-specific ready state. If content loads unpredictably, a fixed delay may still capture the page too early; do not treat the example value as a guarantee.

What is—and is not—confirmed

  • Confirmed: Abstract advertises capture delays and custom timing on its product page.
  • Parameter detail: The generated APIs.io reference identifies delay, specifies milliseconds, and gives 1000 as an example. The accessible official product page does not expose those parameter-level details.
  • Not established by the accessible references: the supported range, default, exact complete request syntax, or interaction between the delay and page-navigation events.

Check Abstract’s current API documentation for the latest request syntax and any limits before relying on a particular value.
