Then inspect the images side by side or as an aligned opacity overlay; for recurring checks, use a visual-regression tool with an approved baseline. Matching viewport dimensions matters because responsive layouts change at breakpoints, but it does not guarantee pixel-identical rendering across different environments.
What “same viewport size” means
The viewport is the browser’s CSS-pixel area in which the page is laid out. It is not necessarily the same as the screenshot file’s pixel dimensions: device-pixel ratio and capture scaling can make an image’s pixel width larger than its CSS viewport width. Set the same CSS width and height in the browser or capture tool for both versions. Do not resize one screenshot afterward to imitate another viewport; scaling an existing image does not make the browser render the page’s responsive layout at a new size.

Choose dimensions that represent the state you need to review. If the site has meaningful mobile, tablet, and desktop layouts, capture and compare each relevant viewport separately. A page captured at one width cannot stand in for a different responsive breakpoint.
Make both captures reproducible
- Fix the viewport. Record the exact CSS width and height and use them for both captures. Keep zoom and DPR consistent as well.
- Keep the rendering environment stable. Use the same browser project and, where possible, the same machine or container, browser version, operating system, browser settings, and headed or headless mode. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode (Playwright visual comparisons).
- Use the same route and application state. Compare the same URL, logged-in state, test data, scroll position, and interaction state. A different banner, modal, carousel slide, or loaded account state can produce a real image difference unrelated to the change you meant to inspect.
- Wait for the page to settle. Ensure web fonts, images, and asynchronous content have loaded. For animated or frequently changing regions, disable animation in the test environment or suppress only the known volatile elements.
- Capture both versions under those settings. Save the original images without resizing or cropping one differently from the other. If you need full-page comparisons, use the same full-page capture behavior for each.
Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing against the saved expectation; that helps with transient rendering, but it does not make uncontrolled page data deterministic (Playwright PageAssertions).

Choose a comparison method
Side-by-side review
Open both images at the same displayed scale and compare matching regions. This is quick and useful when a changed component or layout shift is obvious. It relies on careful human inspection, so subtle shifts and small color changes can be easy to miss.
Opacity overlay
Place one image over the other with partial transparency after confirming that both have identical dimensions and alignment. Misaligned text, borders, and edges appear doubled, making shifts easier to spot. An overlay can be misleading if the captures differ in crop, scroll position, or viewport.

Pixel or perceptual diff
A diff tool marks regions that differ and may allow a threshold to ignore small rendering noise. A stricter threshold catches subtle changes but may flag antialiasing or other harmless variation; a loose threshold can hide a real small regression. Review the changed regions rather than treating the diff image as a verdict.

For repeated checks, save an approved screenshot as a baseline and compare new captures against it. Playwright Test documents a workflow that creates a reference screenshot on first use and compares subsequent captures, with diff configuration and a stylePath option to hide or filter volatile elements. Its visual comparison documentation identifies pixelmatch as the comparison algorithm and describes thresholds such as maxDiffPixels; run comparisons in the same environment as the baseline (Playwright visual comparisons).

Chromatic documents Playwright integration, viewport widths, change thresholds, and baseline comparison (Chromatic Playwright documentation). Its Snapshots documentation says Capture 9 uses DPR 2.0 and warns that differing DPRs register as changed; a fallback to DPR 1.0 can occur for certain browser image-size limits. This is a product-specific behavior, not a general DPR recommendation, and capture implementations can change (Chromatic Snapshots documentation).
Manual review or an automated tool?
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Manual side-by-side or overlay | One-time check, migration review, or visual QA without test setup | Fast to start, but depends on consistent captures and human inspection; small differences can be missed. |
| Playwright Test | Teams already using Playwright that want local or CI baseline checks | Requires a reproducible browser and test setup plus baseline maintenance; environment variation affects results. |
| Chromatic | Team review of component or Playwright snapshots at selected viewport widths | Hosted workflow; check current plan and usage details directly. DPR differences can register as diffs. |
| Percy | Hosted responsive comparisons at selected widths | Each configured responsive width counts as a screenshot toward monthly usage, according to BrowserStack’s documentation; check current plan limits (BrowserStack Percy responsive visual testing). |
For a single before-and-after check, an aligned overlay is often enough. Choose automation when comparisons recur and you need a consistent baseline, team review, or CI feedback. In either case, the important controls remain the same: reproducible captures, viewport coverage that matches your use case, controls for dynamic content, and human review of meaningful changes.

How to interpret and approve a diff
- Check whether the changed area reflects an intended design or code change.
- Look for environmental causes such as late-loading fonts, image changes, timestamps, rotating content, antialiasing, or a browser update.
- Confirm that viewport, DPR, crop, scroll position, and page state match before adjusting thresholds.
- Mask only known volatile regions. Broad masks can conceal layout defects.
- Update the baseline only after deciding that the new appearance is intended; do not approve a diff simply to make a test pass.
Common mistakes and fixes
| Symptom or mistake | Why it causes trouble | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Image files have matching pixel dimensions, but the layouts differ | The CSS viewport may differ, or DPR/scaling may differ. | Set and record the same CSS viewport, zoom, and DPR before recapturing. |
| A mobile capture is compared with a desktop capture | Responsive rules produce different layouts. | Capture both versions at the same target width and height; repeat separately for other breakpoints. |
| Text or images appear shifted inconsistently | Fonts, images, or asynchronous content may not have settled. | Wait for required assets and page state before capture; use stable test data where possible. |
| Many harmless pixel changes appear | Browser, OS, DPR, settings, hardware, or headed/headless differences can affect rendering. | Use the baseline environment and inspect changed areas before tuning tolerance. |
| A real small change disappears from the diff | The threshold may be too generous, or a mask may cover the area. | Reduce tolerance and narrow masks, then review the affected component. |
| A resized screenshot is used to represent a new viewport | Resizing changes the image, not the responsive layout the browser would render. | Recapture the page at the actual CSS viewport dimensions. |

For a screenshot you need to capture rather than a recurring baseline test, ScreenshotNeo can return an image from one GET request. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
