To capture a useful Google search results page (SERP) for SaaS competitor analysis, run a fixed query under recorded conditions, then save a Chrome DevTools screenshot of either the visible viewport or the full page. A screenshot is one observation—not a permanent ranking record—because Google results can vary by time, location, language, device, recent searches, and personalization.
Capture a repeatable Google SERP screenshot in Chrome
- Fix the query and target market. Decide the exact search phrase, country or location, and language before opening Google. Preserve spelling and punctuation across later captures.
- Set the viewport. In Chrome, open DevTools and enable Device Mode to simulate a chosen device or viewport. Capture desktop and mobile separately if both are relevant. Device Mode is a simulation, not a guarantee of how every real device or user will render the page; see Chrome DevTools Device Mode.
- Search and wait for the page to render. Keep the actual Google interface intact. Do not manufacture, remove, or alter result content when creating evidence images. Google’s guidance asks that Search be shown naturally and realistically: Google Search Guidelines.
- Capture the result page. In DevTools, open the screenshot menu and choose a viewport screenshot for what is currently visible, or “Capture a full size screenshot” to include content beyond the viewport. Chrome documents both options in its screenshot guide.
- Save an unchanged original. Use a stable filename, for example
2026-10-03_brand-query_us-en_mobile.png. Keep the original image. If you crop or annotate a copy for a report, identify it as an edited derivative. - Record the capture conditions. Add the exact query, timestamp and time zone, target country or city, language, viewport or simulated device, signed-in status, personalization setting if known, and any visible location or personalization notice.
What to record so comparisons are meaningful
Google says results can change based on time, location, language, device type, recent searches, and personalization. Disabling personalization does not eliminate every contextual difference, such as area, language, or device type. Record the conditions with each image and avoid describing one capture as a universal result for all prospective customers. See Google’s explanation of why results may differ.

- Search setup: exact query, date and time, location, language, and signed-in or personalization state.
- Device and layout: viewport dimensions or simulated device, visible result features, and page structure.
- Competitor visibility: domains and pages shown, their visible order, and whether ads or enhanced result blocks appear.
- Change over time: differences between captures made with the other recorded settings held as consistent as practical.
These are practical comparison axes, not a formal scoring system or a complete explanation of Google’s ranking. A screenshot documents what appeared for one query under one set of conditions.

How to interpret a capture for SaaS competitor analysis
Use the image to document visible evidence: which competitor pages appeared, where they appeared on the captured page, and which SERP features occupied space. When comparing dates, distinguish an actual observed difference from an explanation for it. If the query, location, language, viewport, or personalization state changed, note that alongside the comparison rather than attributing every difference to a competitor’s SEO work.

Keep full-page and viewport captures distinct in your notes. A viewport image answers what was visible without scrolling; a full-page image documents content farther down the page as well. Neither establishes that every searcher received the same result.
Google screenshot use: check the intended publication context
Google’s Search Guidelines state: “You don’t need to ask permission to use screenshots of the Google Search page and search results pages in print for educational or instructional purposes.” That statement is specifically about print for educational or instructional purposes; it should not be generalized into blanket permission for online, commercial, or promotional use. Review Google’s current guidance and the rights relevant to your intended use.

Troubleshooting capture problems
- The screenshot differs from a previous capture: compare the query and recorded time, location, language, device, signed-in state, and personalization conditions. Google results are context-sensitive.
- The capture cuts off content: use “Capture a full size screenshot” instead of a viewport capture when you need content below the fold.
- The mobile image does not match a particular person’s phone: Device Mode simulates a device and viewport; it is not an exact representation of every physical device, browser state, or user.
- You need to inspect how your own page renders to Google: use URL Inspection in the Search Console property you own and run a live test. It cannot inspect competitor SERP placement.
- You plan to publish the image promotionally: do not rely on Google’s print-focused educational or instructional permission statement. Check the current Google guidance and address third-party content rights before publication.
