A screenshot records one rendered search-results page in one session—not a universal or permanent ranking—so preserve its context and compare what is actually visible in each capture.
Plan a comparable desktop-and-mobile capture
Before opening DevTools, choose the search query and the market and language you want to examine. Treat each query and market as a separate observation. Search results can vary between sessions, so hold conditions steady as much as practical and document the conditions that could help another analyst interpret or reproduce your capture.

- Use the same query for the desktop and mobile screenshots.
- Keep the market and language context consistent.
- Choose a repeatable desktop viewport and a repeatable mobile viewport or device preset; record their dimensions.
- Note the capture date and time, whether you were signed in, and any unusual personalization state.
- Save the screenshots separately and label them with the query, date and time, market or locale, device class, and viewport dimensions.
These are audit practices, not a way to eliminate every source of search variation. The screenshots show what appeared during those particular capture sessions.

Capture the SERP in Chrome DevTools
Set up the desktop capture
- Open the target search page in Chrome and enter the query for the market you are auditing.
- Open Chrome DevTools and turn on Device Mode. Set the desktop viewport to the dimensions you chose for the audit and record them.
- Decide whether the question is about the initial search experience or the entire rendered page. Capture the visible viewport for above-the-fold analysis. Choose a full-size screenshot when you need to inspect the whole page.
- Use the Device Mode screenshot menu to capture the screenshot. Save it with a descriptive filename that includes the query, date and time, locale, device class, and viewport dimensions.
Chrome documents Device Mode as a way to simulate mobile devices and capture either the visible viewport or a full-size page. In device-specific mode, the screenshot menu can also include a device frame when that context is useful. See Chrome DevTools: Simulate mobile devices with Device Mode.

Repeat at a mobile viewport
- Keep the query and market context the same, then switch Device Mode to the chosen mobile viewport or device preset.
- Record the mobile viewport dimensions and capture the visible viewport or full page according to the audit question.
- Save this as a separate file and record the session details, including sign-in state and any unusual personalization.
Emulation helps make viewport comparisons repeatable, but it does not establish that every browser- or hardware-specific behavior will match a physical phone.
Choose the right screenshot scope
- Visible viewport: Use this to assess what a searcher sees immediately, including the content above the fold and the first visible results.
- Full-size page: Use this when the audit needs the rest of the rendered SERP. A tall screenshot is less useful for judging the initial above-the-fold experience.
- Device frame: In device-specific mode, include a frame only if it adds helpful context to the saved evidence.
Chrome’s Device Mode documentation gives the screenshot menu instruction: “To capture a screenshot of the whole page including the content that isn’t currently visible in the viewport, select Capture a full size screenshot from the same menu.” See the Device Mode documentation for the current workflow.

Compare desktop and mobile observations
With query and market held as steady as possible, compare the two screenshots for presentation differences rather than treating either image as a definitive ranking record. Keep the raw captures and a short observation log together.
- Viewport dimensions and the amount of content visible above the fold.
- Number and ordering of the organic results that are visible in each capture.
- Snippet length and where text is truncated.
- Paid placements and other visible SERP features.
- Differences in how a result is presented between the captures.
Google says it uses the mobile version of a site’s content, crawled with a smartphone agent, for indexing and ranking. Mobile presentation therefore belongs in a competitor SEO audit. Google also describes responsive design as serving the same HTML and URL across devices while allowing the display to vary by screen size; a visual difference between mobile and desktop does not by itself establish that the underlying content or URL differs. Know what the screenshots can and cannot establish
A screenshot is evidence of one rendered observation, shaped by its query, market, viewport, capture time, and session. It can document visible layout and search-result presentation, but it cannot alone prove a universal rank or explain why results vary. Preserve the metadata alongside the image so readers of the audit can understand its scope.
Device Mode is an emulation-based check. If a consequential mobile usability finding depends on device-specific behavior, verify it on a physical phone as well. Emulation is useful for consistent viewport checks, but it does not prove that all hardware and browser behavior will match. When Lighthouse belongs in the workflow
Use Lighthouse only if the work also calls for a page-quality or performance report. Lighthouse defaults to mobile emulation and provides a desktop preset; its configuration includes form factor, screen emulation, and user-agent emulation. A Lighthouse report is a different artifact from a saved screenshot of search results, so do not substitute one for the other. See Lighthouse’s emulation documentation.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The desktop and mobile images are hard to compare: Check that the query and market context match, and that each screenshot’s viewport dimensions are recorded. Re-capture with consistent settings if needed.
- The screenshot omits lower-page content: Capture a full-size page from Device Mode’s screenshot menu rather than only the visible viewport.
- A tall screenshot obscures the initial view: Save a separate viewport screenshot for above-the-fold analysis; use the full-page capture for page-wide inspection.
- An emulated result seems device-specific: Treat it as a simulation-based observation and verify consequential behavior on a physical phone.
- A performance report is being mistaken for SERP evidence: Save the actual search-results screenshot separately. Lighthouse reports page quality or performance and are not screenshots of the search-results page.
- Another session shows different results: Keep both captures with their timestamps, locale, viewport, sign-in state, and other relevant context. The images record separate observations, not a guarantee of identical results.
