Use your computer’s built-in screenshot tool to capture Google results, then decide whether the date and time should appear in the image or just be associated with the saved file. On Windows, Snipping Tool captures the screen; on Mac, screenshots are saved with a date-and-time filename by default. Neither approach makes a timestamp tamper-proof, and Google results can vary by time, location, language, device, and personalization.
Choose how the timestamp should appear
A timestamp in a filename is easy to retain with the original image, but it is not visible in the image itself. A visible stamp can be added as an annotation after capture, or you can include the system clock in the screen area. If you annotate the image, label the time as device-recorded capture time and keep an unmodified original where possible. The platform instructions cited below explain screenshot capture and filename behavior; they do not establish that an on-image stamp proves when an image was made.

Capture Google results on Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open Google and run the search you need to document.
- Arrange the page so the search query and relevant results are legible. Keep browser or other context in view if it matters to the record.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Select the region, window, or full screen you want to capture. Microsoft documents these capture modes in its Snipping Tool instructions.
- Save the capture from Snipping Tool. Microsoft documents Ctrl + S as a save shortcut. Record the capture time and time zone separately if you need them and the filename does not make them clear.
The Windows instructions establish a way to capture and save a snip; they do not provide a guaranteed visible timestamp overlay.

Capture Google results on a Mac
- Open Google, run the query, and position the page so the query and results are readable.
- Use the built-in Screenshot app or a supported screenshot keyboard shortcut to capture the relevant region or screen.
- Keep the default saved filename if you want its date-and-time association. Apple says screenshots save to the desktop by default with a name containing the date and time, in the format “Screen Shot [date] at [time].” See Apple’s screenshot instructions and the Mac user guide.
- Add a visible annotation only if the time needs to be readable without checking the filename; keep an unmodified copy when possible.
Record enough context to make the screenshot interpretable
A Google results screenshot records one search session, not a permanent or universal ranking. Google says results can differ with time and context, including location, device, recent searches, and personalization. Newly available content can also change results within minutes or hours. For a useful record, save or note:
- The exact search query.
- The capture date, time, and time zone.
- Country or region and language, where relevant.
- Device type and whether personalization may have been active.
- The original, unannotated image if you also create a copy with a visible timestamp.
If someone repeats the search later, provide the query and relevant context, but do not promise that their results will match yours exactly. A wider capture may preserve more context; a tighter crop can make the results easier to read but may omit information that helps explain what was searched.

Common problems and fixes
- The timestamp is not visible in the image: A filename timestamp is not rendered into image pixels. Add an annotation after capture or include the system clock in a wider capture.
- The capture leaves out the query or relevant results: Reposition the page and use a wider region or full-screen capture. Check that the query remains legible.
- The saved Mac filename has no date and time: Apple documents date-and-time names by default. Check that the file was saved through the built-in screenshot workflow and that its name has not been changed.
- Another person gets different results: Differences can arise from timing, location, language, device, or personalization. Share those search details rather than treating the screenshot as a universal result.
- You need to show a time but preserve the original: Keep the original file and create a separately labeled annotated copy. Do not present the annotation as tamper-proof evidence.
What a timestamp can and cannot establish
A visible label or filename can help associate a screenshot with a stated capture time, but neither alone proves when the screenshot was created or that it has not been altered. The cited platform guidance documents capture and naming behavior, not forensic authentication. For a record others can interpret, preserve the original and include the query, time zone, and search context.
