Start by identifying which layer ended the request; then tune page readiness and reduce unnecessary work. Microlink currently documents a 30-second request timeout for its free endpoint and 60 seconds for Pro, so the timeout configured in your own client must allow the API enough time to finish.
Why is my Microlink screenshot API request timing out?
Separate the caller’s deadline from Microlink’s browser work before changing settings. A client-side socket or request timeout means your application stopped waiting; a Microlink error means the service returned a failure; and a slow or blocked target is a separate page-access problem. The incident itself cannot be diagnosed from the word “timeout” alone: check the actual exception, response, error code and headers.
- Record the caller’s exception and elapsed time. If an HTTP response arrived, save its status, body and response headers.
- Check Microlink’s JSON status and any failure code or human-readable message. Its responses can report statuses such as
success, failorerror. - Compare the elapsed time with both your client timeout and Microlink’s documented plan limit: 30 seconds on the free endpoint or 60 seconds on Pro.
- Use the response and error code to choose a fix; do not automatically retry every failure as though it were a slow page.
Microlink’s SDK error reference describes fields including status, code, statusCode, description, URL and headers. Those details help distinguish a caller deadline from a service-side failure. A cURL example’s 30-second client timeout is an example configuration, not evidence that every caller or plan has the same client limit.
How do I increase the Microlink screenshot timeout?
Give your HTTP client enough time to receive the response, but do not expect its timeout setting to extend Microlink’s browser budget. Microlink’s documented request limit is 30 seconds for the free endpoint and 60 seconds for Pro. A wait inside the browser request must fit within that limit; the guide says a waitForTimeout larger than the overall request timeout is ignored.

For example, Microlink’s JavaScript-rendered screenshot guide demonstrates a request with a readiness condition rather than a large arbitrary delay:
curl 'https://api.microlink.io/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.example.com%2Freport&screenshot=true&meta=false&waitUntil=domcontentloaded&waitForSelector=.chart+svg'
Replace the example URL and selector with your target and an element that proves the content you need is present. The command illustrates documented parameters; it is not a tested recommendation for your site. See Microlink’s screenshot parameters and JavaScript-rendered screenshot guide for current syntax and plan limits.

Why is my screenshot blank even though the API returned?
A successful HTTP/API response does not prove that the desired page state had rendered before capture. For client-rendered sites, wait for a meaningful, stable element associated with the content, not merely an early navigation event. Microlink documents waitForSelector for this purpose and says its screenshot.element mode already waits for its target selector to be visible.
Choose a readiness condition that fits the page
| Condition | Use when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
waitForSelector |
A specific element indicates the data or visual state is ready. | The selector must match the actual page and state you need. |
waitUntil lifecycle event |
You need a broad navigation milestone. Documented choices include auto, load and domcontentloaded. |
A navigation milestone does not necessarily mean client-rendered content is ready. |
networkidle0 or networkidle2 |
Network quiet is a meaningful signal for the target. | Long-polling or persistent requests can prevent the page from becoming idle. |
waitForTimeout |
No stable selector or other useful readiness signal exists. | It always spends the specified time, even when a page is fast, and must fit within the request budget. |
Microlink’s guide advises that “Waiting for a condition is both faster and more reliable than waiting for a duration.” This is vendor guidance, not an independent performance test. If content appears only after scrolling or expanding a tab, use the documented interaction options and then wait for the resulting content selector. For full-page captures, lazy-loaded images may also need time or scrolling to appear.

How can I reduce avoidable screenshot work?
- Skip metadata when you only need the image. Set
meta=false. Microlink describes this as the biggest speed improvement for screenshot-only requests. - Disable JavaScript only when the page does not need it.
javascript=falsecan suit a server-rendered page already complete in its HTML, but will break captures that depend on client-side rendering. - Reduce image work only if the result still meets your needs. JPEG and a lower
deviceScaleFactorcan reduce output work at the cost of fidelity; JPEG does not preserve transparency. Microlink says the quality option applies to JPEG, not PNG. - Capture only what you need. Check whether the request needs a viewport, full page, or a selected element rather than doing broader capture work by default.
Inspect the returned screenshot data as well as the image itself. Microlink’s screenshot reference shows response data that can include a screenshot URL, dimensions, type and size. Confirm the expected field is present, then check whether the image contains the intended page state.
How do I distinguish quota errors and target blocking from timeouts?
Some failures need a different remedy from longer waits. Microlink’s API overview says the free plan allows 25 requests per day, reports rate-limit headers x-rate-limit-limit, x-rate-limit-remaining and x-rate-limit-reset, and returns HTTP 429 with ERATE after the limit is exceeded. Check the reset information or use an appropriate key or plan rather than retrying immediately.

The same overview says a free-plan request to a target behind antibot protection can return EPROXYNEEDED. Microlink documents automatic residential-proxy use for recognized antibot or CAPTCHA blocking on Pro. This is an access issue, not a reason to increase a page wait. Its SDK error reference also lists EBRWSRTIMEOUT and ETIMEOUT as timeout-related codes.
For Pro authentication, Microlink says to send the token in the x-api-key header to pro.microlink.io; do not expose that key in frontend code. Keep credentials on the server.

When should I use a different approach?
Microlink says its hosted service is not intended for following links across thousands of pages, driving a live interactive browser session, or fetching static HTML that needs no rendering. Its API overview points to a crawler, local Puppeteer or Playwright, or a plain HTTP client for those distinct jobs. These are task-fit alternatives, not claims that another option will always be faster.

ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its capture process accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status.
Example request (replace the URL and API key):

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a longer client timeout increase Microlink’s request limit?
No. It only allows your application to wait longer; Microlink’s documented request limit remains plan-bounded.
Can I fix an ERATE response by adding a longer wait?
No. ERATE indicates the documented free-plan daily request limit was exceeded; check the rate-limit reset information.
Should I use network-idle waiting on every page?
No. A page with long-polling or persistent requests may never become idle; use a page-specific readiness condition where possible.
