For repeatable full-page captures, use Playwright and set fullPage: true in page.screenshot(). For visual regression, compare later captures with a saved baseline using Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot(). Treat AI review as a separate step: the screenshot and comparison produce visual evidence; a vision model can then assess that evidence against a clearly stated checklist.
Choose the right way to capture the page

A full-page screenshot covers the page’s scrollable extent; it does not prove that every interactive state, transient overlay, or lazy-loaded item has been exercised. Choose a readiness condition and viewport that match the state you intend to inspect.

Capture a full page with Playwright
Install Playwright in a Node.js project, then install its browser. The following example captures a page and saves the image to full-page.png.

}fullPage: true requests the full scrollable page, not just the initial viewport. The chosen viewport still matters because responsive layouts can change what the page looks like. The example waits for network activity to settle, but no single wait strategy fits every site: pages with polling, streaming, or persistent requests may never become network-idle, while a quiet network does not necessarily mean an animation or delayed content has finished. Use a page-specific condition where appropriate, such as waiting for a key selector.
Reduce noise without hiding defects
Playwright’s screenshot API documents animation handling and locator masks. Use them selectively for content that is expected to vary, such as a timestamp or personal account detail. A mask can also conceal a real layout or rendering bug, so keep the masked area as small as possible and review what it covers.

In a Playwright Test suite, toHaveScreenshot() compares a new screenshot against a reference. On the first run, Playwright creates the reference; later runs compare against it. Review a newly created or changed reference before accepting it so that an unintended change does not become the expected design.

});Follow the Playwright setup instructions for your project and run the test with your normal Playwright Test command. The assertion can take the full-page option so the checked image corresponds to the whole scrollable page.
Keep the comparison environment consistent
Playwright cautions that rendering can vary by host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep baseline creation and later checks on matching environments wherever possible; otherwise, environmental differences can look like product changes. See Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance.
Use AI as a distinct review layer
Capture and screenshot comparison are not themselves AI interpretation. If you send an image to a vision model, specify what it should check—such as a missing heading, a visibly overlapping element, or an unexpected blank section—and provide relevant context. Keep the model’s interpretation separate from the browser test result: the former is a review of the image, while the latter is a capture or reference-comparison outcome. Have a person inspect ambiguous findings and update a baseline only when the visual change is intentional.
Alternative capture routes
Firefox Developer Tools for an occasional manual image
When you only need a one-off image, Firefox’s Developer Tools screenshot tool can capture an entire page or an element. Follow the current steps in Mozilla’s screenshot documentation. This avoids adding an automated test setup, but it is not a repeatable comparison workflow by itself.

Chrome DevTools Protocol for protocol-level automation
Page.captureScreenshot in the Chrome DevTools Protocol supports format, JPEG quality, clipping, and capture beyond the viewport. Consult the Page domain reference for parameters and protocol behavior. This route is useful when your automation already speaks the protocol; for ordinary browser tests, Playwright provides a higher-level page screenshot API.
Troubleshoot common capture and comparison problems

The image shows only the visible viewport: confirm the screenshot call includes
fullPage: true. Without it, the standard capture is not a request for the entire scrollable page. -
The page is blank or missing content: check that navigation succeeded and wait for the specific content your test needs before capturing. A completed navigation is not a universal guarantee that every site’s deferred content has appeared.

The test hangs while waiting for network idle: a page that keeps making requests may not reach that state. Replace the generic wait with a condition tied to the content or state being tested.

Screenshots differ across runs or machines: compare browser version, operating system, settings, headless mode, hardware, and power conditions; align the capture environment before treating the image difference as a product regression.

A dynamic area creates noisy diffs: consider an animation option or a narrow locator mask, then verify that it does not hide a defect you intend to catch.

A changed baseline looks suspicious: inspect the old and new images and confirm the change is intentional before updating the reference. A baseline is an expectation, not proof that the page is correct.

Does a full-page screenshot include content that only appears after scrolling?
It captures the full scrollable page, but it does not guarantee every lazy-loaded or interactive state has been triggered. Test the page’s loading behavior and intended state explicitly.
Does Playwright provide AI visual judgments?
The cited Playwright screenshot and comparison documentation describes capture and reference-image comparison, not AI-generated interpretation. Add a vision-model review as a separate step if needed.
