To turn a website quote into a shareable image, verify the exact wording and author, then place a short excerpt in a readable quote card, export it as an image, and share it with a source credit and link. If you want a screenshot rather than a designed card, capture the passage in your browser. A quote image is a file you share; making an image appear in a preview of your website link requires separate page metadata.
Choose the right kind of image
There are two common goals, and they need different approaches:

A designed card is usually easier to read on a phone and leaves room for attribution. A screenshot is quicker and can show the passage in its original page context, but it may include distracting page elements or small text. Choose according to whether context or readability matters more.

Verify the quote and check reuse rights
- Return to the original page. Check the quotation character by character, including punctuation, and confirm the author. Note the page title, author, publisher, and URL for your credit.
- Keep the meaning intact. Choose a short excerpt and retain enough context that cropping does not make the author appear to mean something different.
- Review permission and applicable law. Check the publisher’s reuse terms and consider your jurisdiction and intended use. Attribution is good practice, but it does not by itself establish permission.
For U.S. readers, fair use depends on the circumstances. The U.S. Copyright Office identifies purpose and character, nature of the work, amount and substantiality, and market effect among the factors. It also says there is no automatic safe word count or percentage. Even a brief excerpt may require permission, especially for commercial use or a highly creative work. See the U.S. Copyright Office’s Fair Use FAQ and its text of Section 107. Readers outside the United States should check local law and the source’s terms; these U.S. materials do not decide whether a particular use is lawful.

Make a quote card or capture the webpage
Design a quote card
- Start with a plain background and a clear text area. Add the exact quote, the author’s name, and a concise source credit, such as the publication or page title.
- Use images, fonts, templates, and other design elements only under licenses that permit your intended use. A design-tool license does not grant rights to the quoted webpage text or its images.
- Keep decoration secondary. The quote should remain the most prominent element, with attribution easy to find.
- Export the design as an image file and inspect the downloaded result at the size people are likely to view it.
Canva is one optional way to make a card: its documentation covers downloading published designs. Its content terms allow many personal and commercial uses, subject to the applicable licenses and third-party rights; using a Canva template does not clear rights to someone else’s writing or imagery. Review Canva’s content license agreement.
Use a browser screenshot
- Open the source page and navigate to the passage.
- Adjust the page so the quote and relevant context are visible. Remove unrelated browser or page clutter if your capture method allows it, without cropping away context that changes the meaning.
- Capture the visible area or the whole page, then inspect the image for legibility and attribution. Browser screenshot controls vary, so follow the instructions for your browser and device.
A screenshot preserves more of the source’s appearance, but it is not automatically easier to read or more permissible to reuse than a designed card. Adobe’s screenshot guidance concerns screenshots of Adobe applications specifically; it should not be treated as a general rule for website screenshots. See Adobe’s permissions guidance.

Check readability, accessibility, and export
- Contrast: Make text stand out from its background. Avoid placing the quote over a busy image.
- Viewing size: Check that the words and credit can be read at the image’s actual display size, not only while zoomed in during editing.
- Alternative text: Where the platform supports it, add alt text that conveys the quote and relevant attribution. When practical, include the quote as ordinary text in the post as well, so it is available beyond the image.
- Format: Choose an image format accepted by the destination and check that the exported file opens and displays as intended. Photoshop’s web export help describes JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WBMP options in Save for Web; Canva’s developer documentation describes downloadable design exports.

Sharing a standalone quote image
Upload the exported image to the post or message, include the author and source in the accompanying text when possible, and link to the original page. A link helps readers find the full context and makes the attribution useful.

Showing an image preview for your own webpage
If your goal is for a share of your webpage URL to show a preview image, the page needs metadata; the image file by itself is not enough. The Open Graph protocol identifies og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url as its four required properties, and says an og:image:alt description should match the image. Add appropriate tags in the page’s head, with og:image pointing to an image URL that the preview crawler can retrieve. For example:
