Use a browser automation framework and capture the page with its full-document option. In Playwright, the essential call is await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });. For visual regression, run the same capture through Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(), after fixing the viewport, data and page state and controlling animations and volatile content. AI-generated HTML does not require a special screenshot method; it needs the same deterministic browser setup as any other site.
What “full page” means
A normal screenshot records only the current viewport. A full-page screenshot stitches the entire scrollable document into one image, including content below the fold. Playwright describes it as a screenshot of a full scrollable page “as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” That distinction matters when an AI-built site places sections, cards, forms or navigation below the initial viewport: a viewport image can look correct while the rest of the page is broken.

- Regression testing: compare the current render with a reviewed baseline and fail the test when the visual difference exceeds your configured threshold.
Use an element screenshot instead when the test concerns one component. A full document is often unnecessarily tall and can make small, unrelated changes harder to diagnose.

Choose based on your current stack, whether you want a built-in assertion, the scope you need to capture and how much control you have over dynamic regions. No framework is universally best for every AI-built site.
Prepare a stable test environment
Start the exact deployment or local build that you intend to verify. Keep the following inputs fixed between a baseline and a comparison:
- Browser engine and version.
- Viewport width and height, plus device scale factor.
- Locale, timezone and color-scheme settings.
- Route, authentication state and seeded test data.
- Feature flags and API responses that affect layout.
Use a deterministic test account or fixture rather than a live feed. AI-generated projects frequently include loading placeholders, random examples or time-dependent copy; those can create diffs even when the layout is unchanged.

Capture a complete page with Playwright
The following script navigates to a site, waits for a page-specific readiness condition and writes one full-document image. Replace the URL and selector with values from your application.

If your application has no readiness marker, wait for a stable heading, a populated table or another condition that represents the state under test; a navigation event alone does not prove that client-side data has finished rendering.

Capture only one component
For a focused check, take a locator screenshot. This avoids a very tall image and makes ownership of a failure clearer.

Return screenshot bytes instead of a file
A buffer is useful when an image-diff service, object store or test reporter accepts bytes directly.

Turn the capture into a visual regression test
Playwright Test adds the toHaveScreenshot assertion. It waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the result with the expected snapshot. That stabilization step reduces failures caused by a frame that was captured while the page was still settling.

Mask only content that is genuinely volatile
Mask a clock, rotating recommendation, avatar, advertising slot or other region whose changing value is not the subject of the test. Do not mask a heading, button, form field or layout area whose visual correctness matters. A broad mask can hide the very regression you are trying to find.
Disable motion without changing the product contract
Prefer the assertion’s animation control or a test-only style that freezes transitions. Keep the production layout, fonts and breakpoints intact. Removing an element merely to make a snapshot pass creates a test that no longer represents what users see.
Make AI-generated pages deterministic
Wait for application readiness, not just navigation
Single-page applications often render a shell first and fetch content afterward. Wait for a selector that appears only when the intended content is present, or wait for a known network response and then assert the rendered state. A generic timeout can be useful as a last resort, but it is less reliable than a condition tied to the page.

Control fonts and image loading
Font fallback changes line wrapping and therefore the height of a full-page image. Make the test environment use the same font files every run, and wait for critical fonts or images before capture. If the site lazy-loads images, scroll or trigger the application’s loading behavior before the screenshot, otherwise the baseline may contain placeholders.
Freeze data and personalization
Seed records, fix the clock where practical and use a known authentication state. Keep locale, timezone and feature flags constant. Personalised banners, rotating testimonials and random IDs should either be deterministic fixtures or narrowly masked.
Handle overlays and consent dialogs
Unexpected overlays can block actions and obscure content. Dismiss a dialog through the same user path your product expects, or configure a test fixture that starts with the dialog already handled. Do not hide an overlay with CSS if the purpose of the test is to verify that the overlay appears and is usable.
Reviewing and maintaining baselines
A changed image has three common causes: an intended design update, an unintended visual regression or a difference in the test environment. Compare the diff with the code and fixture change, then have a reviewer decide whether the baseline should move. Store snapshots with the test so that a baseline update is an explicit, reviewable change.

Keep capture dimensions stable. A different width can activate another responsive breakpoint, while a different device scale factor changes pixel dimensions. If you need several supported layouts, create separate projects or tests with named snapshots rather than allowing a single baseline to represent every viewport.
Puppeteer alternative
Puppeteer also exposes a Page.screenshot API. This is a practical choice when your existing suite already uses Puppeteer or when you plan to send the image to a separate comparison service.

await browser.close();The reviewed Puppeteer API documents page screenshots, but it does not establish a built-in equivalent to Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion. Add your chosen pixel-diff process, or select Playwright when the integrated assertion and stabilization behavior are important.
Run full-page checks in continuous integration
- Build the AI-generated site from the commit under test.
- Start it on a predictable local port or test URL.
- Install the pinned browser version used by the project.
- Run the test with fixed viewport, locale, timezone and test data.
- Upload the screenshot and diff as artifacts when a test fails.
- Require a reviewer to classify the change before accepting a new baseline.
Keep the browser project and operating-system assumptions documented. If the same page is rendered on multiple engines or operating systems, maintain separate baselines when font rasterization or engine differences make a single image inappropriate.

Troubleshooting full-page screenshot failures

Performance, reliability and storage considerations
A full-page image grows with document height and pixel density. Long landing pages can consume substantially more memory and storage than a viewport capture. Use a normal device scale factor unless high-density output is part of the requirement, and capture only the pages or components that answer a test question.
Full-page screenshots are most reliable when the document has settled before capture. Waiting for a readiness condition is usually better than adding an arbitrary multi-second delay. For pages with infinite scroll, define the tested boundary: a full-page capture can only include content that exists in the document at capture time, and an unbounded feed may never reach a stable height.
Keep artifacts for failed runs and a limited set of approved baselines. Retaining every passing image can make storage expensive without improving diagnosis. If you send buffers to an external diff service, treat screenshots as potentially sensitive test data and apply the same access controls as other build artifacts.

Practical decision checklist
- Use Playwright when you need browser-level interaction and a built-in visual assertion.
- Use a Playwright buffer when another system owns image comparison or artifact storage.
- Use Puppeteer when it already powers your automation and you are comfortable adding comparison logic.
- Use a hosted API when browser installation, consent cleanup, asynchronous jobs or bulk URL capture are the main operational burden.
- In every route, make viewport, page state, fonts, data and dynamic content explicit before treating a screenshot difference as a product defect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does full-page capture include content hidden behind a collapsed accordion?
Only content that is rendered in the document at capture time is included. Open or expand the state you intend to test before taking the screenshot.
Can I use one baseline for every browser engine?
You can, but font rasterization and engine differences may create noise. Separate projects and baselines are safer when the same pixels are not expected across engines.
What should a visual diff review approve?
Approve a new baseline only when the changed pixels match an intentional product change and the test environment is unchanged; otherwise fix the page or its fixtures.
