To capture and compare game screenshots at full resolution, use a capture method that fits your game and platform, then check the saved original file’s pixel dimensions and format. Compare captures from the same scene and settings at their original pixel scale. “Full resolution” can mean the game’s render resolution, the display’s output resolution, or the image file’s dimensions; upscaling can make those values differ.
What “full resolution” means for a game screenshot
A game renders an image at a particular resolution, which may or may not match the resolution sent to your display. A capture method can save either of those stages, depending on how it works. The resulting image file has its own width and height in pixels, which you can verify directly.

This distinction matters when the game uses GPU upscaling. NVIDIA notes that GPU-level Image Scaling can leave software captures at the lower, pre-upscaled resolution. A screenshot that looks sharp on screen or in a thumbnail does not prove that the saved original has display-sized dimensions. NVIDIA’s Image Scaling documentation describes this capture limitation and the driver-level capture support it discusses.

Steam Overlay for Steam games
Steam’s Overlay can capture screenshots in games that support the Overlay. F12 is the default screenshot key; you can change it in Steam’s In-Game settings. Windows command-line capture with wdcapture
Microsoft’s GDK wdcapture screenshot command uses Windows Graphics Capture. Its documentation specifies PNG output for SDR and JXR for HDR, with options for a filepath and display selection; Windows 10 or later is listed as a prerequisite. Confirm that the game and application expose the content you want through this capture route. The wdcapture documentation describes its command options and formats.
AMD ReLive
AMD’s documentation describes ReLive screenshot and gameplay-capture support for compatible hardware and software. Capture resolution is configurable; for In-Game output, the documentation says it automatically matches the resolution used in the game. Check the capture configuration and current driver compatibility rather than assuming what the saved image will contain. AMD’s published FAQ includes a dated hardware compatibility list, so consult its ReLive FAQ for scope and current support.

NVIDIA Image Scaling
If GPU Image Scaling is enabled, ordinary software capture may record the lower pre-upscaled image rather than the upscaled display output. NVIDIA’s article names GeForce Experience’s Alt+F1 screenshot function as a supported driver-level route at the time it was published. Driver behavior and menus can change, so check current support for your GPU and software version before relying on that specific route. NVIDIA’s article on Image Scaling explains the distinction.

Some games offer a photo mode with a special high-resolution or “super resolution” capture setting. Check the individual game’s documentation or photo-mode options; the feature is not universal. NVIDIA documented such a feature for Tekken 7 in 2017, and noted that very large images may require a 64-bit application to view or edit. That example does not establish support in other games. Windows Snipping Tool can capture the full desktop, but Microsoft’s support page does not establish that it preserves a game’s render resolution or HDR pipeline. Treat it as a desktop capture option, then inspect the saved file. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions explain how to use it.
Set up a repeatable capture
- Choose a stable scene. Use the same location, camera position, and UI state for each capture.
- Record the current settings. Note the game resolution, graphics settings, and capture method. If you are testing anti-aliasing, sharpening, or upscaling, change only that variable between images.
- Capture with the chosen method. Use the same method for both images where possible. If you switch between in-game, driver-level, or desktop capture, record that difference.
- Keep the original files. Do not use a social-media upload or resized preview as the basis for checking dimensions or detail; services may alter the image.
Verify the saved image’s dimensions and format
Open the original file’s properties or inspect it in an image application. Record its width × height in pixels and its file format, then compare those dimensions with the game’s render and display/output resolutions. This confirms what was saved—not, by itself, which stage of the image pipeline the capture represents.

For HDR captures, check that the chosen route and format retain the intended HDR data. Microsoft documents JXR output for HDR in wdcapture; do not assume an SDR format or a preview preserves HDR information. Keep the original file for any later comparison.
Compare two captures fairly
- Match the scene and viewpoint: align the camera, visible content, UI state, resolution, and graphics settings unless one of those is the variable being tested.
- Use original files at 100% scale: compare at the images’ native pixel scale, or use an image viewer’s synchronized zoom so equivalent details appear at the same scale.
- Inspect meaningful details: compare crops around fine textures, edges, and other areas affected by the setting you changed.
- Disclose any resizing: resizing one capture changes the relationship between its pixels and the other image. If you resize for display, note that; do not present the resized view as a native-resolution comparison.
- Record capture differences: note the file dimensions, format, capture route, and setting changed. Different capture stages or formats can affect what the images show.
Video recording is not interchangeable with still-image capture. Steam’s Game Recording documentation says video may miss frames when gameplay starts or ends, or when resolution changes. That is a video-recording caveat, not evidence about the pixel dimensions of a still screenshot. Steam’s Game Recording help covers those conditions.
