To trace value afterward, follow the specific output being spent into a later transaction—not an address as though it were a person. You can do this lookup with public information; never enter a seed phrase or private key.
What you need before you start
- The TXID: Ask the sender or service for the transaction ID. It identifies one transaction record; it is not a receiving address. [Bitcoin Core transaction lookup]
- The right network: Make sure the explorer is set to Bitcoin mainnet if that is where the payment was sent. A transaction on another network will not appear in a mainnet search.
- The expected payment details: Have the intended receiving address and amount available so you can compare them with the transaction’s outputs.
A wallet login is not required to look up a public transaction. Use only public identifiers such as a TXID or address; an explorer has no legitimate need for your seed words or private keys. [Bitcoin.com guide to checking a transaction without a wallet login]

How to check a Bitcoin transaction
- Open a block explorer that supports Bitcoin and select Bitcoin mainnet if the service offers a network selector.
- Paste the TXID into the explorer’s search field and open the matching transaction record. Explorer layouts and displayed fields differ by provider. [Blockchain.com Explorer]
- Review the status and block or confirmation information. If the record is unconfirmed, it has not yet been included in a block. If it is included, it has one confirmation; each later block adds another.
- Inspect the inputs and outputs. Find an output with the expected receiving address and amount. Transactions can combine multiple inputs and create multiple outputs, so do not assume one input equals one sender or one output equals one recipient. [Bitcoin Developer Reference: Transactions]
- Check the fee and other displayed fields if they matter to your question. An explorer may show details such as inputs, outputs, fee, timestamps, and confirmation status, but the exact presentation depends on the service. [Blockchain.com Explorer]
How to interpret confirmations
An unconfirmed transaction has not yet been included in a block. Inclusion gives it one confirmation; each subsequent block adds one. Bitcoin blocks are found approximately every ten minutes on average, but mining is probabilistic, so that average is not a promised wait time for any particular transaction. [Bitcoin.org FAQ]
There is no universal confirmation count that makes every payment safe. The recipient decides what is sufficient for its own risk and policy. A displayed status is also time-sensitive: a transaction may gain confirmations, and an unconfirmed transaction may not be visible to every service or node.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How to follow the movement of an output
Bitcoin transactions spend earlier outputs and create new outputs. To follow a particular unit of value, start with the exact output in the transaction you found, then look for a later transaction input that spends that output. The link between them is the prior transaction ID plus the output’s index, often called an outpoint. [Bitcoin Developer Reference: Transactions]
- Open the transaction that received the payment and identify the output of interest by its address, amount, and output index.
- Open or search for the transaction that spends that specific output. Its input references the earlier transaction and output index.
- Inspect the later transaction’s outputs to see where the value was assigned next. If one output is later spent, repeat the process using that output’s outpoint.
This traces on-chain outputs, not a person. A transaction records inputs and outputs, not names, and an address alone does not establish who controls it or who received value in the real world. Multiple inputs and outputs can also make a simple one-sender-to-one-recipient interpretation misleading.

What to do if the TXID is missing or results disagree
- Recheck the TXID: A mistyped character can prevent a match.
- Check the network: Confirm that the transaction was intended for Bitcoin mainnet and that the explorer is showing that network.
- Compare another explorer: A second provider can help distinguish a display issue or data-source difference, though it remains another third-party view.
- Use a synchronized Bitcoin Core node if you need a more independent view: Bitcoin Core provides wallet, command-line, and API/RPC access, but requires setup and synchronization. Its transaction lookup documentation explains that unconfirmed transactions may lack block information; a transaction outside the node’s mempool may be unknown to that node. [Bitcoin Core gettransaction RPC] [Bitcoin.org: Bitcoin Core]
A missing explorer result by itself does not prove that no transaction was broadcast. First verify the identifier and network, then compare another data view or consult your own synchronized node.

Which way to verify should you use?
| Option | Best for | What it shows | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public block explorer | A quick, one-off lookup | Transaction details such as inputs, outputs, fees, and confirmation status, depending on provider | Convenient, but the provider’s data sources and display determine what you see. [Blockchain.com Explorer] |
| A second public explorer | Checking a missing or unexpected result | A separate provider’s rendering and observed status | Useful as a cross-check, but still a third-party service. |
| Bitcoin Core node/RPC | Greater independence from public explorer services | Blockchain and wallet transaction data available to that node | Requires installation and synchronization; a node’s view of unconfirmed transactions depends on its mempool.
