Satellite internet usually works through cloud cover and light precipitation, but heavy rain, snow, hail, or severe storms can weaken the signal and cause slowdowns or temporary dropouts. If service fails while the sky over your home is clear, weather at a distant network gateway may still be involved. Check your provider’s outage information first, then inspect your equipment safely after hazardous weather passes.
How bad weather affects satellite internet
Satellite internet relies on a radio link between your terminal and a satellite, as well as network infrastructure on the ground. Severe weather can weaken that radio link; snow or ice accumulating on a terminal can also interfere with reception. The effect depends on the provider, equipment, location, and storm conditions, so no single weather threshold or outage duration applies to every service.

Clouds and light precipitation
Viasat and Hughesnet say ordinary cloud cover and light rain generally should not interrupt service; Hughesnet also says fog should not affect it. These are provider descriptions, not guarantees for every installation or weather event.
Heavy precipitation and severe storms
More intense weather is likelier to cause trouble. Viasat says a very severe thundershower or heavy snowstorm may cause a temporary loss of service. Hughesnet identifies heavy thunderstorms and heavy snow or ice storms as possible causes of intermittent connectivity or temporary loss. Starlink says moderate to heavy rain, snow, and hail can cause momentary dropouts. [Starlink Help Center]

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Why a clear sky at home may not mean clear service
A local terminal is only one part of the connection. Viasat and Hughesnet say weather at a distant gateway can affect service even when conditions at a subscriber’s home are clear. Starlink also identifies storms near local ground stations as a possible factor and says its network can route traffic around some storm systems to reduce their impact.
What to do when satellite internet goes out
- Check the provider’s app and outage information. Look for service alerts and outage history before assuming the dish or router has failed. Starlink recommends checking app alerts and outage history. Viasat lists its app and automated phone system; it also offers an outage map for California customers. Current status can change, so use the provider’s current channel.
- Record the symptoms. Note when the problem began, whether service is completely offline or merely slow, and whether it coincides with rain, snow, hail, or high winds. If interruptions recur, note their timing and check the app’s outage history. Starlink recommends tracking patterns such as weather and Wi-Fi setup when investigating intermittent problems.
- Wait for hazardous weather to pass, then retest. Weather-related signal loss may clear as conditions improve. If snow or ice is visibly covering the terminal, remove it gently only if the equipment is safely accessible and the provider’s guidance supports doing so. Do not climb onto a roof or handle exposed wiring in dangerous conditions.
- Check power and connections. When it is safe, confirm the modem, router, and terminal have power; make sure accessible cables are seated and show no visible damage. Look for storm damage, water, or debris around outdoor hardware without putting yourself at risk. Follow the instructions for your specific equipment rather than disconnecting unfamiliar wiring.
- Use the provider’s diagnostics and restart instructions. Viasat advises customers to check power and wiring, reboot the modem and any separate router, and run the modem diagnostic in the My Viasat app. Starlink’s guidance includes checking cables, connections, and visible hardware damage. Use your provider’s own procedure for your equipment.
- Separate a satellite outage from a home Wi-Fi problem. If the provider reports a working connection but devices still cannot get online, check whether the issue affects one device or the whole home and review the router or Wi-Fi setup. Starlink advises checking for obstructions in its app and considering Wi-Fi setup; Viasat notes that router or computer issues can also prevent access. A mesh Wi-Fi system may help with indoor dead spots, but it will not repair a weather-interrupted satellite link.
- Contact support if service stays down or damage is visible. Use the provider’s current support channel if the connection does not return after weather improves, diagnostics do not resolve the problem, or equipment appears damaged. Avoid replacing parts based only on a weather-related dropout.

| Provider | Weather described as a possible problem | Recovery or troubleshooting guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Viasat | Cloud cover and light rain or snow generally should not interrupt service; a very severe thundershower or heavy snowstorm may cause temporary loss. Weather at a gateway can affect service under clear local skies. | Viasat says recovery is automatic and that weather outages typically do not last more than 20 minutes. That is Viasat’s stated typical experience, not a guarantee or a benchmark for other providers. Its troubleshooting guidance includes checking outage notices, power, wiring, rebooting the modem and any separate router, and running the My Viasat app diagnostic. |
| Hughesnet | Cloudy skies, light rain, and fog generally should not affect service; heavy thunderstorms or heavy snow or ice storms may cause intermittent connectivity or temporary loss. Gateway weather can matter when local skies are clear. | Hughesnet says service restores automatically when the weather clears. Its support guidance does not state a universal recovery time. |
| Starlink | Moderate to heavy rain, snow, and hail can cause momentary dropouts. Storms near local ground stations may also matter; the network can route around some storm systems to reduce impact. | For lingering trouble, its guidance points to app alerts and outage history, safe removal of snow or ice, obstruction checks, cable and connection inspection, and checking for visible hardware damage. Contact support if those steps do not resolve the issue. |
When a cable or other equipment may be relevant
Weather attenuation is not fixed by buying a replacement cable or adding Wi-Fi equipment. Consider hardware only when the symptoms point to that component: for example, visible cable damage or a suspect connection. Starlink recommends using its official cables to avoid compatibility problems; verify the cable type, connector, and terminal generation for your equipment before ordering. A surge protector is an optional measure for safeguarding against unexpected power surges, not a way to prevent rain-related signal loss or restore an interrupted satellite link.
