Loki captures Storybook stories; it is not a general-purpose crawler that automatically screenshots arbitrary production URLs.
What Loki captures—and what it does not
Loki is used for visual regression testing of Storybook projects. Its documented workflow runs against stories available from a Storybook server or static Storybook input. That makes it useful for checking whether a component’s rendered pixels change, including text and layout, but it does not by itself diagnose or repair an Indian-script font problem.

For a representative test, create or use a Storybook story containing the actual Indian-language text and the same CSS and font-loading configuration used by the site component. Latin placeholder text is not enough: it cannot show whether the required script’s glyphs are available and rendered correctly.
Prepare the story so the font can be tested
Use real text and the site’s font setup
- Include actual words in the relevant script, not only Latin text.
- Use the same font-family and weight declarations, stylesheets, and font files as the component you want to protect.
- Check that language-dependent content and required network requests have completed before the screenshot is taken.
This fixture is a practical way to make the test representative; Loki’s documented capture workflow does not prescribe a particular Indian-language font, script fixture, or font-fallback fix.

Make asynchronous rendering deterministic
If the story loads content asynchronously, use Loki’s async-story callback pattern so the story signals when it is ready. Stabilize animations and other changing content as well. An intermittent screenshot is difficult to diagnose while the story is still changing; a longer general page-load wait is not a substitute for explicitly signaling that the content is ready.
Run Loki and verify the baseline
- Start the Storybook server or provide the static Storybook input that Loki will capture.
- Choose a browser or device target that matches the environment you want to protect. Keep it consistent between the baseline and later test runs.
- Run
yarn loki updateto create the initial reference images. - Open the generated screenshot and inspect the actual glyphs, spacing, and line wrapping. A successful command does not prove that the font rendered correctly.
- After code or styling changes, run
yarn loki test. Inspect the current screenshot and the visual difference image. - Approve a changed reference only after confirming that the new capture is correct. Loki’s suggested approval command, or
yarn loki approve, should not be used to bless a screenshot with broken glyphs.
Loki produces current screenshots and visual differences. A diff shows that rendered pixels changed; it does not identify whether the cause is a failed font request, CSS fallback, a browser or platform change, or another rendering difference.

Choose a consistent browser or device target
Loki’s documented targets include Chrome in Docker and local Chrome for web, as well as iOS and Android simulator or emulator configurations. Select the target that represents the environment you intend to test, then use the same target for the reference and comparison run. Browser, platform, and font availability can affect rendering, so screenshots taken in different environments may not be directly comparable.
If your concern is a mobile rendering issue, include a relevant mobile target rather than relying only on a desktop capture. The official Loki material supports multiple targets but does not rank particular Indian-language font and browser combinations.

Settings that help isolate the problem
Load timeout
--chromeLoadTimeout controls how long Loki waits for the page to load before taking a screenshot. Treat it as a general load-time setting: the documented behavior does not say that it waits for document.fonts.ready or guarantees web-font readiness. Make the story’s readiness explicit when font or content loading matters.
Capture region and output locations
chromeSelector can restrict the captured area. Choose a region that includes the text and enough surrounding layout to reveal shifts caused by a fallback font. Loki also allows configuration of reference, output, and difference locations. Keep reference images in version control or another consistent artifact system so later runs can compare against the intended baseline.

Difference engines
Loki allows diff-engine configuration. A difference image is evidence of a pixel change, not a font diagnosis. Start by opening the current capture itself; if the glyphs are already wrong there, investigate rendering and asset loading before changing comparison settings.
Troubleshoot broken or unstable glyphs
