Use the Rust crate thirtyfour with Tokio to control Chrome through WebDriver, navigate to a URL, and save the returned PNG bytes. Rust does not have an official Selenium language binding in the sources cited here; thirtyfour is a Rust WebDriver client that implements W3C WebDriver. The example below uses its locally managed ChromeDriver workflow. Pin the crate version and confirm its screenshot method signature against that version’s documentation before compiling.
What you need
- A Rust project with Tokio enabled for the async entry point.
- Chrome or Chromium installed. For the managed example,
thirtyfourmanages a matching local ChromeDriver; its documented example still requires a compatible Chrome installation. - The
thirtyfourcrate. Its docs.rs listing was version 0.37.5 when consulted; check the current documentation and pin the version you use inCargo.toml. thirtyfour documentation.
The crate supports PNG screenshots of the browser and individual elements. The exact screenshot method signature is version-dependent and is not shown in the documentation extract cited here, so do not assume a method name from Java or Python Selenium examples.

Capture a website screenshot in Rust
This workflow opens a managed WebDriver session, loads a page, waits for a page-specific element, captures PNG bytes using the screenshot API for your pinned thirtyfour version, writes them to disk, and explicitly shuts down Chrome.
- Add and pin
thirtyfourand Tokio inCargo.toml. Enable Tokio’s macro and runtime features required by#[tokio::main]; verify the feature names and versions against the crate documentation. - Choose a screenshot method documented for that pinned version: browser-level capture for the current browsing context, or element-level capture when you need one element.
- Ensure the destination directory exists before writing the file.
Use this as a workflow skeleton, not a copy-and-run program: replace the marked screenshot operation with the exact call and return type documented for your pinned crate version.

use std::fs;
use thirtyfour::prelude::*;
#[tokio::main]
async fn main() -> WebDriverResult<()> {
let caps = DesiredCapabilities::chrome();
let driver = WebDriver::managed(caps).await?;
driver.goto("https://example.com").await?;
// Prefer waiting for a page-specific element over an arbitrary sleep.
driver.query(By::Css("h1")).first().await?;
// Replace with the screenshot call documented for your pinned version.
// let png_bytes = ...;
// fs::write("screenshot.png", png_bytes)?;
driver.quit().await?;
Ok(())
}
WebDriverResult covers WebDriver operations, but ordinary fs::write returns an I/O error. If you use ? on both, either map the I/O error into a common error type or return a broader error type from main. Ensure cleanup is attempted if navigation, waiting, capture, or file writing fails; a small helper or explicit error-handling path can call quit() before returning the original error.
Wait for the page you intend to capture
A successful navigation does not necessarily mean the content you want has rendered. Use thirtyfour’s element query or explicit waits to poll for a meaningful selector, such as the main heading or a results container. A fixed sleep can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one.
Rank #2
For pages whose content depends on client-side rendering or lazy-loaded images, select a readiness condition that matches the capture: an element becoming visible, a loading indicator disappearing, or the relevant content appearing. The crate documentation describes query-based polling and explicit waits. Review the version-specific wait APIs.

Selenium Manager is a separate driver-management facility documented by the Selenium project. It has shipped with Selenium releases since 4.6 and can discover, download, and cache drivers as a fallback when a Selenium binding has no driver supplied. Do not assume a Rust WebDriver client invokes Selenium Manager: thirtyfour documents its own managed-driver path. Selenium Manager documentation.
Screenshot scope: viewport versus full page
A standard WebDriver screenshot captures the current browsing context; it should not be treated as a guaranteed full-page capture. The Selenium documentation describes the screenshot command in terms of the current browsing context, and the cited thirtyfour listing establishes browser and element PNG capture but not full-page behavior. If you need a full-page image, verify that the specific client and browser combination explicitly supports it. Otherwise, a normal screenshot may contain only the visible viewport. An element screenshot is useful for a selected element, but it is not equivalent to capturing a whole long page.

- Session creation fails after a Chrome update: a manually installed ChromeDriver may no longer match Chrome. Coordinate their versions or use
thirtyfour’s managed driver workflow. Selenium Manager documentation describes a mismatch after Chrome upgraded from 113 to 115 while a manually downloaded driver remained at 113; those are an example of version drift, not current version guidance. Selenium Manager. - ChromeDriver cannot be found or started: for manual setup, confirm the driver exists for your platform, is executable, and is discoverable through
PATHor an explicit configuration. If the browser is not in a standard location, ChromeDriver options support specifying a browser binary path. Setup guide · Capabilities. - The screenshot is blank or misses page content: navigation may have completed before the target content rendered. Wait for a page-specific selector or other meaningful readiness condition before capturing.
- The file is not created: check the output path and create its parent directory first. Handle filesystem errors separately from WebDriver errors.
- The program hangs or shutdown errors disappear: call
driver.quit().await?during normal cleanup. The crate recommends explicit shutdown because relying on drop can block the async executor and hides shutdown errors. - Headless or container execution fails: Chrome flags and system-library requirements vary by environment. Verify them for the target platform rather than copying a universal flag list; the cited material does not establish one set of container requirements.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Capture time depends on browser startup, navigation, and the readiness condition you choose; there is no universal duration established by the cited documentation. Reusing a session for multiple pages can avoid repeated browser startup, while a fresh session gives stronger isolation between captures. In either case, explicitly quit sessions and choose waits that reflect the page’s actual content.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the standard WebDriver screenshot automatically capture the full page?
No full-page behavior is established by the cited client documentation; verify support for your exact browser and crate version.
Can I take a screenshot of only one element?
Yes. The thirtyfour documentation lists PNG screenshots for individual elements as well as the browser.
Does a Rust Selenium client automatically use Selenium Manager?
Not necessarily. thirtyfour documents its own managed ChromeDriver workflow; Selenium Manager behavior is documented for Selenium bindings.
