For most cartoon sources recorded at 30 fps or less, start with 1920×1080 at 30 fps, H.264 video at a constant 10 Mbps bitrate, a 2-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC audio at 128 Kbps. Use RTMPS and Rec. 709 SDR. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations for 1080p30 H.264—not settings tested specifically on a cartoon feed. Before committing to a 24/7 run, test the actual loop, confirm your upload connection can sustain the bitrate, and plan for YouTube’s limits on long-stream archives.
Recommended OBS profile for a 1080p cartoon loop
| Setting | Starting value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 | Set this under Settings → Video. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Suitable as a starting point for source video at 30 fps or lower. Match the source when possible. |
| Video encoder | H.264 | A straightforward compatibility baseline for YouTube ingest. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding. |
| Video bitrate | 10 Mbps | YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p30. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps | YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo. |
| Connection protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. |
| Color | SDR, Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use HDR only if the source and full encoding workflow are deliberately configured for it. |
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations are organized by resolution, frame rate, and codec, not by content genre. The 10 Mbps recommendation is therefore not a cartoon-specific measurement. YouTube also lists progressive scan, two B-frames, and one reference frame in its advanced guidance. Check the current encoder settings guidance for available controls and workflow compatibility: YouTube live encoder settings.

Set the profile in OBS
- Set video size and frame rate: Open Settings → Video. Choose 1920×1080 output resolution and 30 fps for a source at 30 fps or less. If the source uses a different frame rate, match it when practical rather than creating unnecessary frame conversion.
- Configure the encoder: Open Settings → Output. If necessary, change Output Mode to Advanced so the encoder exposes rate control and keyframe controls. Select H.264, set rate control to CBR, bitrate to 10,000 Kbps, and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. OBS notes that service requirements and the available connection constrain the bitrate; do not select a rate your upload cannot sustain.
- Choose an encoder your system can sustain: If a supported hardware encoder is already available and stable, it can shift encoding work away from the CPU to specialized hardware. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, but the best option depends on the hardware and its stability. There is no need to buy a particular GPU based on this general guidance. See OBS hardware encoding guidance.
- Set audio: In OBS’s audio/output controls, use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps. OBS’s general overview discusses a different broad audio setting, but YouTube’s live-specific recommendation for stereo is 128 Kbps; use that for this YouTube profile. See OBS streaming overview and connection troubleshooting.
- Set SDR color: Use Rec. 709 and 8-bit for a standard SDR cartoon. Avoid enabling HDR unless the source, encoder, and rest of the workflow support it intentionally. YouTube’s current guidance identifies H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
- Select RTMPS and connect your stream: In OBS’s stream settings, choose YouTube and RTMPS if the encoder offers the choice. Use the stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; treat it like a password and do not share or publish it.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, so you do not need to create separate viewer resolutions in OBS. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
When to use 1080p60 instead
Use 60 fps only when the cartoon source is genuinely 60 fps and preserving its smoother motion matters. YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60, compared with 10 Mbps at 1080p30. The listed minimum H.264 rates are 6 Mbps for 1080p60 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30; the recommended rates are the relevant starting point for quality, provided your connection and computer can sustain them. YouTube’s table is not genre-specific.

| Profile | YouTube H.264 recommendation | Minimum listed by YouTube | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | The source is 30 fps or slower, or 30 fps is sufficient for the loop. |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps | The source is 60 fps and the computer and network can keep it stable. |
OBS cautions that 60 fps can demand more system resources than 30 fps and recommends testing capacity. If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, return to 30 fps or use a stable hardware encoder rather than assuming the higher frame rate is automatically better. See OBS hardware encoder guidance.
Check upload capacity and stream health
The encoder must be able to send the selected bitrate continuously, not just briefly. YouTube advises checking that outbound connection capacity is sufficient and testing the setup. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic for choosing bitrate; it is not a guarantee for a 24/7 stream. Base the decision on sustained stability and observed dropped frames, not a single speed-test peak. If connection problems continue, lower the bitrate and test again. See YouTube’s stream setup tips and OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting.

- Use a stable network connection and make sure competing uploads or backups will not consume the capacity your stream needs.
- Before launch, test with a representative section of the cartoon, including its typical audio and image movement.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect the preview and stream-health messages. While live, monitor audio and video quality.
- Confirm OBS is not reporting persistent dropped frames, and check that any local recording file is growing as expected.
For an operation that needs encoder redundancy, YouTube’s advanced tips include testing failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and confirm the player rolls over to the backup encoder. This is an optional high-availability procedure, not a requirement for ordinary creators. See YouTube live streaming tips.

A continuous 24-hour broadcast has an archive risk. YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, while streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a copy, record locally and verify that the recording is being written. You can also end and restart the broadcast in sessions shorter than 12 hours, accepting that the stream will have session breaks. YouTube explicitly recommends a local archive backup; see YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Check rights and channel rules before looping cartoons
Only stream cartoons and audio you have the rights or permission to use. A video being available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Copyright claims or takedowns can interrupt a stream or affect a channel. A long-running loop does not change the underlying rights question.
Also make sure the channel and stream meet YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization policies. Replaying material continuously is not, by itself, proof of original or monetizable content; assess whether you have the necessary rights and whether the channel offers sufficient original value under the policies that apply to it. Check current requirements in YouTube’s live streaming guidance and review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a loop.
