Chrome DevTools can capture a selected area, one page element, the visible browser viewport, or the entire page—including content below the fold. Choose the capture method based on what you need: use the Command Menu for an area, the Elements panel for a single element, or Device Mode for viewport and full-page screenshots.
Choose the right screenshot type
| What you need | DevTools method | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| A rectangular part of the page | Capture area screenshot | The region you drag over |
| One page element | Capture node screenshot | The selected DOM node |
| What is currently visible | Capture screenshot in Device Mode | The current emulated viewport |
| The full page | Capture a full size screenshot in Device Mode | Page content beyond the viewport |
These are built-in Chrome DevTools workflows; you do not need a separate screenshot application for them. Chrome documents these and other DevTools screenshot approaches in its screenshot guide.

Capture a selected area
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+I or right-click the page and choose Inspect.
- Keep DevTools docked to the browser window. Area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+P to open the DevTools Command Menu. Alternatively, open DevTools’ Customize and control DevTools menu and choose Run command.
- Type screenshot, then choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag over the region you want to capture. Chrome saves the resulting image as a download.
The Command Menu provides the drag-to-select workflow; see Chrome’s Command Menu documentation, last updated September 4, 2024.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Capture a single page element
- Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
- Find the element in the DOM tree. If you are not sure which node corresponds to the page item, use the element picker in DevTools and click the item on the page.
- Right-click the desired DOM node and choose Capture node screenshot.
Chrome saves a node screenshot to the Downloads folder on Windows and macOS. This captures the selected node, rather than a manually drawn rectangle or the whole page. See Chrome’s guide to viewing and changing the DOM.

Capture the visible viewport or the whole page
Use Device Mode when you want the current viewport or a full-page capture. The full-size option includes content that is not currently visible on screen.
- Open DevTools and click Toggle device toolbar to enter Device Mode.
- In the device toolbar, select More options.
- Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the full page.
Device Mode also lets you choose a device preset or adjust the viewport before capture. A device preset changes the emulated page viewport; it does not turn a Windows laptop into a physical mobile device. See the Device Mode documentation for the controls and behavior.

Check the result and solve common problems
- “Capture area screenshot” is unavailable or does not work: make sure DevTools is docked, then reopen the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P and select the command again.
- The screenshot cuts off content below the fold: use Capture a full size screenshot in Device Mode instead of Capture screenshot, which is for the visible viewport.
- You captured the wrong part of the page: use the area method for a drawn rectangle, or select the specific DOM node and use Capture node screenshot when you need just one element.
- You cannot find a node: use the Elements panel’s element picker to identify the visible item, then right-click its corresponding node.
- You cannot find the downloaded image: check Chrome’s download list and the Windows Downloads folder. Chrome’s DevTools guide specifically names Downloads as the save location for node screenshots.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need repeatable captures from code rather than a one-off screenshot in DevTools, ScreenshotNeo returns a website screenshot with one GET request. The example below saves the response as a WebP image; replace the target URL and supply your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
