For a one-off capture or a recurring job configured in GrabzIt’s web interface, start by importing cookies from a signed-in browser session. For an automated application, supply the session cookies through GrabzIt’s server-side API. The right method depends on how the target site authenticates; a screenshot service cannot use your signed-in browser session unless you provide the relevant session state or use an authentication method the site supports.
Choose an authentication method that fits the site
- Cookie import: Best starting point for a manual capture or a recurring capture set up through GrabzIt’s web interface. GrabzIt describes its Cookie Importer as the easiest and most reliable way to replicate a user’s session, and says an imported file can include cookies from subdomains. GrabzIt’s support article
- Cookies set through the API: Suited to automated workflows, especially when the session changes or must be selected by your application. Use a server-side integration: browser JavaScript cannot access HTTP-only cookies commonly used for sessions. See the support guidance and Node.js API reference.
- Submit page HTML: GrabzIt’s support article describes sending the page HTML through its JavaScript API. This works only if the referenced CSS, JavaScript, images, and other resources can also be accessed by the capture process. Support article
- Post a login form: A limited option for capturing the page immediately after the login form, or when successful login redirects directly to the desired page. It is not a general-purpose way to automate every login flow. Support article
- HTTP Basic Authentication: Use this when the site presents the browser’s basic-authentication prompt; GrabzIt documents supplying the credentials for that case. Support article
Import cookies for a manual or web-interface capture
- Sign in to the target site in a browser and open the page you need to capture. Make sure the account is authorized to access that page.
- Export the signed-in session’s cookies in the Netscape cookie-file format supported by GrabzIt. The file is plain text; each line represents a cookie and includes fields such as its domain, path, expiration, and value.
- In GrabzIt, use the Cookie Importer to import the file for the capture. Follow GrabzIt’s current interface and account documentation for the exact upload controls.
- Run the capture and inspect the result. If it shows a login page or omits authenticated content, check whether the session has expired and whether cookies for relevant subdomains are included.
Authentication can depend on several cookies, not just the one that appears most obvious. A site may set separate cookies for its application, authentication, or API subdomains. GrabzIt warns that omitting required subdomain cookies can lead to incomplete captures or a redirect to the login screen. Use the smallest set of cookies that the page needs, and prefer a dedicated, low-privilege account for automated capture.

Supply session cookies from an application
For recurring automated captures, use the cookie-setting methods in the GrabzIt API for your chosen language. The Node.js reference documents custom cookie methods and capture-status checks for processing, cached, or expired captures: GrabzIt Node.js API. Consult the matching language reference for exact method names and parameters; names shown in one library should not be assumed to apply to another.

Obtain the session cookies through an authorized server-side flow, then pass only the cookies required for that capture. Do not try to read HTTP-only session cookies from client-side JavaScript; they are intentionally unavailable to page scripts. Keep both the session data and GrabzIt credentials on the server, and avoid logging cookie values.

Protect API credentials and session data
GrabzIt’s API uses an application key and secret. Its API overview advises keeping them safe and says access can be restricted by domain and IP address. For its JavaScript API, GrabzIt recommends authorizing permitted domains so copied client-side code cannot freely consume account resources: JavaScript API documentation. Never put an application secret in browser code.
GrabzIt states that imported cookie files are transmitted over HTTPS, stored securely, used only for captures initiated by the account holder, and inaccessible to other users. That is the vendor’s own security statement, not an independent assessment. For sensitive systems, use a dedicated low-privilege account and follow your organization’s data-handling requirements.

Set the output and capture dimensions
GrabzIt supports screenshots and other conversions, including PDF and DOCX, through its API suite. API overview Output and dimension parameters can differ between language libraries. For example, GrabzIt’s ASP.NET image-capture documentation lists JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, and TIFF, describes BrowserHeight = -1 for a full-length screenshot, and says output width and height can be set to -1 to match browser dimensions. Treat those as ASP.NET-specific parameter names, not universal API syntax.

Troubleshoot login-page and incomplete captures
- The result is the login screen: The session cookie may have expired, the export may be missing a required cookie, or a required cookie may belong to an authentication or application subdomain. Sign in again, export the current session, and include the cookies the site needs.
- The page loads but authenticated sections are missing: Check for additional cookies and for restricted resources such as scripts, stylesheets, or images. HTML submission will not help if the resources it references are inaccessible to the capture process.
- The login form is submitted but the target page is not captured: Form posting is documented for the page directly after login or a successful login redirecting to the desired URL. For a more complex flow, use the site’s supported session-cookie approach instead.
- Browser code cannot access the session: HTTP-only cookies are not available to client-side JavaScript. Move cookie handling to a server-side integration.
- The site uses a different authentication challenge: Basic authentication is relevant to the browser’s HTTP basic-auth prompt, not every login screen. The documented approaches do not establish that every MFA, bot-check, or site-specific flow will work; test only with authorization and do not assume compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same cookie file for captures indefinitely?
Not necessarily. Session cookies can expire or be replaced, so a capture that worked earlier may later return the login page.
Does importing cookies guarantee that every logged-in page can be captured?
No. The target site’s session design and access to the page’s rendering resources determine whether capture succeeds.
