Route the playout system’s program audio into an encoder, pair it with a visual, and send the encoded stream to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The exact audio connection depends on the playout computer, its outputs, the encoder’s operating system, and any existing console or interface. Before announcing the stream, run a supervised end-to-end test—and confirm the station has rights for the YouTube simulcast and any replay.
How the signal gets from the playout system to YouTube
The usual signal path is:
Playout audio → capture or routing → encoder with a visual → YouTube Live

The playout system supplies the program audio; it does not necessarily produce a YouTube-ready stream itself. An encoder such as OBS captures or receives that audio, combines it with a visual, and sends the result to YouTube. A station-branded still image or a program view can serve as the visual.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose an audio route that fits the station
First identify where the playout software runs and what signal it can provide. Prefer a direct program feed over capturing sound from room speakers when a direct route is available; speakers add an avoidable capture step and may pick up room noise.

| Route | When it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Capture audio from the playout application | The playout app and encoder run on the same supported Windows computer. | OBS documents application audio capture as a beta source for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. Confirm that the specific app is available to capture and that no other audio route is duplicating it. |
| Use an existing console, mixer, or interface output | The station already has a program or broadcast output that can feed the encoder. | Identify the output connector, signal level, channel format, and the encoder’s compatible input. Confirm that the selected output carries the intended program mix. |
| Add an external audio interface | The playout system has an output but the separate encoder computer has no compatible input. | Match the interface’s inputs to the source connector and signal level, and check operating-system and driver support before buying. |
There is no universal interface requirement or verified model recommendation for this setup. Buy hardware only after confirming a real connection gap. If OBS is configured with an input or output source and the same device is also selected globally, audio may be captured twice and produce echo. OBS advises disabling global Desktop Audio when using its application-audio capture source to avoid duplication.
Set up and test the YouTube stream
- Verify live access. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the scheduled start.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the channel. Do not publish or share it publicly.
- Connect the audio and visual in the encoder. In OBS or another encoder, select the confirmed playout audio route and add a still image or other suitable visual. Listen to the encoder’s monitoring output, if used, and check YouTube’s preview for clear, non-duplicated audio.
- Enter the YouTube destination. Configure the encoder with the server URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMP as a typical server option. HLS is also available when the encoder supports it and is configured for it; YouTube says HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion. Choose a protocol the encoder supports and that fits the station’s latency needs.
- Run a supervised end-to-end test. Confirm that the feed appears in Live Control Room, the intended program audio is present, the visual is correct, and there is no echo or unintended desktop sound. Check levels and listen on the YouTube output, not only at the studio console. No particular station’s routing has been tested here, so verify the complete path on the station’s own equipment before scheduling a broadcast.
- Start and end deliberately. Use the YouTube go-live control when the workflow calls for it. Decide in advance whether YouTube’s replay is wanted and authorized. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; an archive is a separate rights and publishing decision, not just a by-product to ignore.
Clear rights for the live simulcast and replay
Permission to broadcast over the air, or to operate an existing web-audio stream, does not by itself establish permission for a YouTube live video simulcast or its retained replay. Before launch, have the station’s rights administrator or counsel check the actual licenses and restrictions for the station, the content, the territories reached, and any archive. Music can involve rights in both the musical composition and the sound recording.

YouTube Help, in “Copyright issues with live streams,” says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A detected match can result in a placeholder, interruption, or termination. YouTube also says that a licensed channel may need the rights owner to add it to a Content ID allowlist, and archived streams can receive Content ID claims after the live broadcast ends. A stream that starts successfully—or has no immediate claim—is not proof that all rights are cleared.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s discussion of sections 112 and 114 describes statutory provisions for certain sound-recording transmissions and ephemeral recordings. College Broadcasters, Inc. discusses college-station webcasting and rights in compositions and sound recordings. These materials provide U.S.-oriented context, not a determination that a particular station’s licenses cover YouTube. Rules and licensing arrangements can differ by jurisdiction; verify the station’s own grants rather than assuming an existing license applies.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No audio reaches YouTube | The encoder is listening to the wrong device, application, or output. | Check the selected OBS source or input device, confirm the playout is actually producing audio there, and verify the console/interface routing and connector. |
| Echo or doubled audio | The same device or signal is captured both as a source and through global audio settings, or two routing paths are active. | Remove the duplicate capture. With OBS application audio capture, disable global Desktop Audio as OBS advises; otherwise ensure the same device is not selected both globally and as a source. |
| Room sound, alerts, or other computer audio is on the stream | Desktop or microphone capture includes sound beyond the playout program. | Use a dedicated program feed or application capture where supported, then inspect every active audio source and test the resulting mix. |
| Encoder will not connect | The server URL or stream key may be incorrect, the selected protocol may not be supported or configured, or live access may not yet be enabled. | Copy the current URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream, check the encoder’s protocol settings, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live enablement. |
| Stream is interrupted or terminated after starting | YouTube may have detected matching third-party content, or the encoder connection may have failed. | Check Live Control Room notices and the encoder status. If a copyright match is reported, stop and resolve rights or Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner; do not simply restart with the same uncleared material. |
| Replay is claimed after the live ends | Archived video can receive a Content ID claim after the event. | Review the archive and the claim, and confirm that the station’s permissions cover retained YouTube video as well as the live transmission. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it is not a live input for a playout system or a way to go live from a camera. That makes it an option for authorized recorded programming, not a substitute when the requirement is to simulcast the station’s real-time playout feed. For its supported prerecorded-video workflow, upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live.
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
