How to Capture a Website Screenshot After Images Load in Playwright

Wait for Playwright’s current HTML images to load and decode before capturing; learn how to handle lazy loading, failures, full-page shots, and visual tests.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture a Playwright screenshot after a page’s HTML images are ready, wait for navigation, trigger lazy loading if needed, then wait for each relevant image to load or fail and decode successful images before calling page.screenshot(). A navigation milestone such as load alone does not guarantee that images inserted or changed later by application code are ready.

Wait for images before taking a screenshot

This JavaScript example launches Chromium, navigates to a URL, scrolls through the page to trigger common lazy-loaded images, waits for the HTML images present at the readiness check, decodes successful images, and saves a full-page PNG. Install Playwright with npm install playwright; if you have not installed its browser yet, run npx playwright install chromium.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

async function waitForImages(page) {
  await page.evaluate(async () => {
    const images = Array.from(document.images);

    await Promise.all(images.map(async (img) => {
      if (!img.complete) {
        await new Promise((resolve) => {
          img.addEventListener('load', resolve, { once: true });
          img.addEventListener('error', resolve, { once: true });
        });
      }

      // A failed image can still have complete === true.
      if (img.naturalWidth > 0 && typeof img.decode === 'function') {
        try {
          await img.decode();
        } catch (error) {
          // This example accepts a partial screenshot if decoding fails.
          console.warn(`Could not decode image ${img.currentSrc || img.src}`, error);
        }
      }
    }));
  });
}

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });

    // Optional: scroll to encourage images using native lazy loading to load.
    await page.evaluate(async () => {
      const step = Math.max(1, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8));
      for (let y = 0; y < document.body.scrollHeight; y += step) {
        window.scrollTo(0, y);
        await new Promise(resolve =>
          requestAnimationFrame(() => resolve())
        );
      }
      window.scrollTo(0, 0);
    });

    await waitForImages(page);
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Replace https://example.com with the page you want to capture. The scroll is useful for long pages, but it is not a universal lazy-loading trigger: a site may load content only after a particular interaction or app-specific state. If scrolling, clicking, or waiting for application data inserts or replaces images, perform those actions first, then call waitForImages(page) again immediately before the screenshot.

What the image check guarantees—and what it does not

Load, error, and decode are different states

The code waits for each image’s load or error event when it is not yet complete. It then checks naturalWidth: a broken image may report complete even though it has no usable image data. For images with a positive intrinsic width, decode() waits until the image data is ready to use. Decoding can reject if the request failed, the source changed during decoding, or the data is corrupted; decide whether that should abort your capture or be logged and accepted as a partial result. MDN documents decode() behavior and failure conditions.

The check is a snapshot

document.images includes the HTML image elements present when the check starts. It does not automatically account for images that the page inserts afterward. Nor does it cover every visual asset: CSS background images, canvas drawing, video or other media, and content inside frames may need separate, page-specific readiness checks. If the page exposes a reliable ready indicator, wait for that state as well as image decoding.

Choose a navigation and readiness condition

Condition What it tells you When to use it
load The document’s load event has fired. It does not establish that later client-side image requests, lazy images, or post-navigation replacements are finished. A reasonable starting point for ordinary navigation; follow it with explicit checks when image completeness matters.
networkidle Playwright defines it as no network connections for at least 500 ms. It observes network activity, not image decoding or whether the intended page state has been reached. Do not treat it as a general image-ready signal. Playwright marks this option discouraged for tests.
Explicit image readiness Waits for the current HTML image elements to load or fail, then decodes successful images. Use when the screenshot must contain the images currently rendered by the page.
Application-specific readiness Waits for a known app state, such as a loading indicator disappearing or required content appearing. Use when the app inserts images after data rendering or an interaction.

Playwright’s Page API documents navigation milestones and notes that networkidle is discouraged for tests. A quiet network can occur before an image is decoded, while persistent connections or background requests can prevent the network from going idle.

Capture the full page or a viewport

Use fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page; omit it or set it to false for the current viewport. Full-page mode changes the capture extent, not the readiness of the resources. Trigger lazy loading and finish the image check before taking the screenshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
// Viewport only:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });

The Page API also documents screenshot settings such as output path, animation handling, and scale (css or device). Choose those settings to match the intended output and keep them consistent when comparing captures.

For visual regression tests, wait for stable output too

For a one-off image file, page.screenshot() is the direct capture method. In Playwright Test, expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the result. That helps with visual stability, but it is not a guarantee that every intended image has loaded; combine it with application readiness and image checks where needed. See the PageAssertions API.

Visual baselines can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep the environment consistent when maintaining screenshot comparisons. Playwright’s Visual comparisons guide discusses these sources of rendering variation.

Troubleshoot missing, broken, or late images

  • The screenshot has blank spaces where lazy images belong: scroll through the page before the image check, or use the site’s own interaction or readiness signal to trigger those images. Then check again.
  • An image is broken but the wait completes: complete can be true on failure. Inspect naturalWidth; decide whether a zero-width result should fail the job, be logged, or be allowed in a partial screenshot.
  • The screenshot misses images added after the check: run the check again after the app has finished rendering or after actions that can insert or replace images.
  • The image loads but appears unfinished in the capture: make sure the code calls decode() on successful images. If decoding rejects, handle the error according to whether a partial capture is acceptable.
  • The image is a CSS background, canvas, media element, or frame asset: the HTML image check does not cover it. Add a readiness check appropriate to that asset or page.
  • networkidle never arrives or arrives too early: do not use it as a proxy for image readiness. Persistent connections can keep network activity open, and network quiet does not prove image decoding or application completion.
  • Visual tests vary between runs or machines: stabilize the browser environment and settings, and distinguish screenshot stability from the app’s own readiness.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Send one GET request with a URL to retrieve a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture process accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
