Device Mode is an approximation, not a substitute for checking a real phone. Before reusing another company’s website content, check the relevant terms and rights notices; a public page is not automatic permission to reuse every asset.
Choose screenshots that support the pitch
Start with the pages that substantiate the proposal rather than capturing a site indiscriminately. Depending on the pitch, that might mean the homepage, a product or service page, a pricing page, a contact path, or a form. If a slide contrasts the existing site with an agency concept, identify which image is current-site evidence and which is a proposed design.

Decide what the slide needs to show before capturing: a page overview, the full flow of a long page, a particular component, or a mobile-sized layout. This choice determines the capture method and helps avoid screenshots that are too broad to read or too tightly cropped to establish context.

Capture screenshots in Chrome DevTools
Chrome DevTools provides several capture scopes. Its command labels may change with Chrome updates, but the documented workflow distinguishes visible viewport, full-page, selected area, and selected node captures. Set up a repeatable desktop or mobile viewport
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode. Choose a named device preset or enter a responsive width and height. For a desktop capture, set the desired viewport dimensions rather than relying on an unspecified window size.
- Check the page at the intended zoom and scroll position, and wait for the relevant content to load.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu, type screenshot, and choose the visible-area screenshot command for the current viewport.
For mobile slides, capture the mobile-sized viewport separately. Chrome’s documentation describes Device Mode as a “first-order approximation” of how a page looks and feels on a mobile device: it simulates a desktop browser viewport, not the full behavior of a physical handset. Label such images as simulated, and inspect on a real phone before making claims about device-specific behavior.
Capture a long page
When the slide needs to show content beyond the current viewport, open the Command Menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot. The result includes the page beyond the visible screen. Check that lazy-loaded images and other below-the-fold content actually appeared before using the image as evidence.

Capture a region or one page element
- Region: Open the Command Menu, search for “screenshot,” choose the area screenshot command, then drag over the part of the page to capture. Chrome’s documentation notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked.
- Element: In the Elements panel, select the relevant node, then choose Capture node screenshot from its context menu. This is useful for a component such as a navigation menu or call-to-action, while keeping the capture tied to the selected page element.
Make the evidence readable and comparable
For a set of screenshots intended to compare pages, devices, or a before-and-after concept, keep the capture conditions consistent: URL, date, viewport width and height, zoom, scroll position, and relevant page state. These are practical editorial controls, not an official Chrome standard.
Use a short caption such as example.com/pricing · desktop · 1440 px or example.com/pricing · mobile simulation · 390 px. Include the source URL and capture date in a caption or speaker notes where appropriate. Crop to focus attention, but retain enough context to identify the page and interaction. Do not edit page content so that the image appears to show a state or feature that was not present.

Automate recurring captures with Chrome Headless
For a repeatable command-line capture, Chrome Headless documents the --screenshot and --window-size flags. This example requests a mobile-sized viewport; it does not establish that the rendered page is equivalent to a real phone or that all content has loaded.
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com/Before putting automated output in a client deck, confirm the browser version, intended page state, and loaded assets. Check rights before putting another site in a deck
A website being publicly viewable does not by itself establish permission to reproduce all of its content. A page can contain separate works—such as text, software, photographs, graphics, and music—with different rights holders. Review the relevant website terms and rights notices, and obtain permission where required. For a disputed or high-stakes use, seek qualified legal advice; the facts of a particular deck matter.
The Government of India’s Presentation Gov portal says its own material may be reproduced after proper permission, should be accurately reproduced and not used in a derogatory or misleading context, and should be prominently acknowledged. Its terms also exclude third-party copyrighted material unless permission is obtained from the rights holder. Those are terms for that portal, not a general legal ruling for every Indian website or pitch deck. See Presentation Gov Terms of Use and IP India for copyright context.

Accessibility context for public-sector sites
The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and apps include accessibility guidance referencing WCAG 2.1, responsive presentation, and using actual text instead of images of text when the technology permits. This is relevant context when evaluating government websites; it should not be generalized as a blanket legal mandate for every private business website. Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot of a publicly accessible website automatically be reused in a pitch deck?
No. Public visibility alone does not establish permission to reuse the page’s text, images, or other embedded works. Check the applicable terms and rights notices and obtain permission where required.
Does Chrome Device Mode prove how a site works on a particular phone?
No. Device Mode simulates a viewport in desktop Chrome. Check on an actual handset before making device-specific claims.
