How to Capture a Webpage in Dark Mode as a Full-Page Screenshot

Set a page’s dark color-scheme preference in DevTools, reload, inspect the result, and capture the full page in Chrome or Firefox.

To capture a webpage—not just the browser interface—in dark mode, emulate the dark color scheme in DevTools, reload the page, then use the browser’s full-page screenshot command. In Chrome, choose Capture a full size screenshot in Device Mode. In Firefox, use its full-page screenshot tool or run :screenshot filename.png --fullpage in the DevTools console.

Before you start: dark browser theme is not dark webpage rendering

A browser’s dark interface changes the appearance of its menus and toolbars; it does not necessarily change the webpage. To darken the page, ask the site to render its dark styles using the prefers-color-scheme: dark preference. This only produces the site’s authored dark appearance if the page supports it.

If a site has no dark theme, Chrome’s Automatic dark mode can generate a dark treatment. It is separate from preference emulation and may alter colors or images in ways the site’s designers did not intend. Inspect the page before saving the screenshot.

Chrome: emulate dark mode and capture the entire page

  1. Open the page and DevTools. In Chrome, open the target webpage, then open DevTools using the browser menu or the keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
  2. Set the page’s color-scheme preference. Open the DevTools Rendering tab. Under Emulate CSS media feature prefers-color-scheme, select prefers-color-scheme: dark. Chrome also exposes color-scheme emulation in the Elements panel’s Styles pane. See Chrome’s CSS media feature emulation documentation.
  3. Reload the page. Reload after setting the emulation so the page can respond to the dark preference.
  4. Check the result. Scroll through the page and look for light sections, unreadable text, or dynamic content that has not updated. If the page remains light because it has no authored dark theme, use the separate Automatic dark mode option if available. Chrome describes this as an automatically generated dark theme for light-themed sites; it also sets prefers-color-scheme to dark. Review Chrome’s documentation on automatic dark theme and other rendering effects.
  5. Capture beyond the viewport. Open Device Mode, then use Capture a full size screenshot. This captures page content outside the currently visible browser area. Chrome documents the Device Mode controls in its Device Mode documentation.

Preference emulation or Automatic dark mode?

  • Use preference emulation when the site has a dark theme and you want its own styles to appear.
  • Use Automatic dark mode when the site is light-only and you want Chrome to generate a dark appearance. The generated treatment can differ from a carefully designed dark theme.

Firefox: emulate dark mode and take a full-page screenshot

  1. Open the page inspector. In Firefox DevTools, use the page inspector’s color-scheme controls to emulate light mode, dark mode, or no emulation. Mozilla notes that no emulation follows the operating system preference; matching that preference may mean an emulation does not visibly change the page. Details are in Mozilla’s page inspector documentation.
  2. Inspect the page’s appearance. Confirm that the webpage itself has changed to dark mode. A change to Firefox’s own interface is not enough.
  3. Capture the full page. Use Firefox’s screenshot tool and choose the full-page option, or open the DevTools console and run :screenshot filename.png --fullpage. Mozilla documents the full-page screenshot tool and command in its screenshot guide.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can return a webpage screenshot through one GET request, including WebP output:

Troubleshooting

  • The page is still light: Verify that prefers-color-scheme: dark is selected and reload. The site may not provide dark styles; try Chrome’s Automatic dark mode if you want a generated treatment.
  • Only browser menus look dark: That is the browser interface theme. Change the page’s color-scheme emulation in DevTools instead.
  • The screenshot only shows the visible area: Use Chrome’s Device Mode command Capture a full size screenshot, or Firefox’s full-page option or --fullpage command.
  • The page looks different after capture: Dynamic content may load or change after the initial render. Inspect the page before saving, and allow it to finish loading before taking the screenshot.
