A locator screenshot captures the matched element; a page screenshot captures the page. The two approaches produce different results, so choose based on whether you need the iframe’s content alone or its placement alongside surrounding page elements. Capture a specific element inside an iframe
This TypeScript example uses Playwright Test, navigates to a page, selects a payment iframe by test ID, finds a heading inside it, and saves that element as a PNG:

Prefer user-facing locators such as roles and labels, or an explicit test ID, over selectors tied to fragile implementation details. The inner locator is resolved within the selected frame. Capture the iframe body or the parent page
Save the iframe body
When you need a broad capture of the frame’s rendered document, use a body locator:

Include the iframe in the surrounding page
To show how the iframe appears to a visitor within the parent page’s viewport, capture the page:

- Select the intended iframe explicitly. When a page has several frames, use a stable ID, name, or test ID to distinguish the target.
- Use a stable locator inside the frame. A meaningful role, label, or test ID makes the target easier to identify and maintain.
- Let locators wait for the target. Playwright locators resolve when used and support auto-waiting and retryability. Avoid using a fixed sleep as your default synchronization strategy.
- Resolve ambiguity rather than guessing. Frame locators are strict when a selector matches multiple frames. Narrow the iframe selector so the code cannot target the wrong one.
- Check the installed binding and version. The examples here use JavaScript/TypeScript. Playwright documents
page.frameLocator()as added in v1.17; other language bindings and older releases can have different syntax or feature availability. Confirm the API against your installed version in the Page API documentation.
Common iframe screenshot problems
The screenshot contains the whole page, not just the frame
page.screenshot() captures the parent page. To capture only iframe content, use page.frameLocator(...) and call screenshot() on an inner locator.
The capture omits surrounding page content
An element screenshot is limited to the matched element. Use page.screenshot() if the parent page’s context and iframe placement need to appear together.

Playwright reports that the frame selector is ambiguous
The selector may match multiple iframes. Identify the intended one with a more specific stable selector, such as its ID or test ID.

Check that the chosen iframe and inner selector identify the rendered target on the page. Prefer a user-facing role or an explicit test ID, and use Playwright’s locator waiting behavior rather than adding an arbitrary delay first.
The code works in one setup but not another
Verify that the installed Playwright release supports the API and that you are using syntax for the language binding in your project. The examples above are for JavaScript/TypeScript; the corresponding APIs differ across bindings.

Can I capture just one element inside an iframe?
Yes. Select the iframe with frameLocator(), locate the element within it, and call screenshot() on that locator.
Does fullPage: true capture the full iframe document?
It requests a full-page screenshot of the parent page. To target content within the frame, take a screenshot of an inner frame locator instead.
