Make the baseline and CI capture in the same environment before changing screenshot thresholds. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Once those inputs match, stabilize dynamic page content, inspect the visual diff, and update a baseline only when the UI change is intentional.
Why Playwright screenshots differ in CI
A screenshot baseline is tied to the environment that produced it. Differences across operating systems, browser builds, Playwright versions, settings, hardware, or headless mode can alter rendering even when the page code has not changed. Playwright recommends creating and comparing screenshots in the same environment. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance.

Other common sources are mismatched viewport or device scale, missing system fonts or dependencies, and page content that changes between runs. A stable, repeatable diff that corresponds to an application change may instead be a genuine UI regression—or an intended design update.

Fix the mismatch in the right order
- Record and compare both environments. Note the Playwright version, browser project and version, operating system or container image, headless mode, viewport, device scale factor, and relevant browser settings for the baseline run and CI. Hardware and power conditions can also affect rendering. Align environment differences before loosening comparison rules.
- Install the browser build for your Playwright version. Playwright browser binaries are tied to Playwright releases. After changing the package version, run the matching browser installation command and ensure CI has the required OS dependencies. Follow the browser installation guidance and CI setup documentation for your setup.
- Match the capture dimensions and scale. Keep the viewport and device scale factor the same. The page screenshot API uses device scale by default, so a high-DPI device can produce more image pixels than the CSS viewport suggests. Screenshot assertions have a scale option; use a consistent value across baseline and CI. See the Page API and PageAssertions API.
- Make page state deterministic. Wait for application-specific readiness, use stable test data, and control animations or other transient details. Screenshot assertion options can disable animations, hide the caret, and apply a stylesheet with
stylePathto mask or neutralize volatile regions. Keep styles narrowly scoped so they do not conceal real defects. - Inspect the actual, expected, and diff images. Use Trace Viewer to compare them and check browser and viewport metadata. Classify what changed: platform or font rendering, dynamic data, animation or timing, image dimensions or scale, or application UI. See Trace Viewer documentation.
- Adjust tolerances only for a demonstrated small variation. Playwright provides
maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, andthresholdoptions. A higher tolerance reduces sensitivity and can hide meaningful changes; document the reason and keep the setting as strict as the team’s signal permits. - Update snapshots only for confirmed intentional changes. Use Playwright’s
--update-snapshotsworkflow, review the generated images, and commit the baseline changes with the corresponding application change.
Match the remedy to the evidence
| Diff pattern or cause | Best first response | Trade-off to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Broad typography, antialiasing, or layout drift | Align operating system, browser and Playwright versions, and relevant environment settings. | Platform pinning improves consistency but does not resolve volatile page content. |
| Text wraps differently or glyphs change | Check fonts and system dependencies in the CI image. | Masking text can hide real content and layout regressions. |
| Image dimensions or edge sampling differ | Compare viewport, device scale factor, and screenshot assertion scale. | Changing the scale changes the captured image and must be reflected in the baseline. |
| Localized or intermittent regions shift | Stabilize test data and timing; disable animations or narrowly mask known volatile elements. | Broad masks can suppress the very changes the test should catch. |
| Stable difference matches a UI code change | Decide whether the change is intended; if so, review and update the baseline. | Accepting snapshots without reviewing them can normalize an unintended regression. |
| Small, understood rendering variation remains after environment alignment | Use a narrowly chosen pixel or color threshold. | Looser thresholds lower the chance of noisy failures but increase the chance of missed changes. |
Screenshot assertion controls to consider
Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before resolving a screenshot assertion. Its documented controls can further reduce volatility:

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call

Consult the current PageAssertions API for exact option types and supported values for your installed version. These controls address specific capture or comparison behavior; they cannot make different operating systems and browser builds identical.
Troubleshoot common CI screenshot failures
- Many tests show text or antialiasing differences: compare the host image, browser build, Playwright version, fonts, and system dependencies. Avoid widening thresholds until those inputs match.
- The diff image has different dimensions: check viewport and device scale factor, then verify screenshot scale. Device-scale capture can make pixel dimensions larger than the CSS viewport.
- Only a few regions flicker between runs: look for animations, blinking carets, timestamps, randomized data, or delayed content. Wait for the application’s readiness condition and use a focused stylesheet only for irrelevant volatility.
- CI fails after a Playwright package update: install the browser binaries corresponding to the new Playwright release and check the CI image’s dependencies.
- A tolerance change makes failures disappear: inspect the diff again and verify the environment first. A broad threshold can hide a real visual change.
- A consistent diff follows a design change: determine whether it is intended, review the new reference, then update and version-control the snapshot if appropriate.
