For an image of what is on screen, use macOS Screenshot. For a whole-page file that preserves webpage content, Safari can save a Web Archive—but that is not an image. Shortcuts’ “Run JavaScript on Webpage” action is for retrieving page data or changing page content, not a documented screenshot workflow.
Choose the right capture for what you need
| Your goal | Use | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Save the visible part of Safari as an image | macOS Screenshot | An image of the selected screen area or window; it is not a documented capture of the entire scrolling page. |
| Capture everything on the display | Shift-Command-3 or Screenshot’s entire-screen option | An image of the full display, including other visible apps and desktop content. |
| Keep a webpage with its graphics and links | Safari’s Web Archive option | An archive file, not a screenshot image. |
| Save the page’s HTML | Safari’s Page Source option | HTML source, not a rendered image. |
| Retrieve data from a page or modify it | Shortcuts’ Run JavaScript on Webpage action | Data or page changes, not a documented screenshot. |
Take a screenshot of Safari with macOS Screenshot
Open the webpage in Safari and bring the content you want to capture into view. Apple documents captures of the whole screen, a window, or a selected portion—not a single image that automatically includes the entire scrollable webpage.

- Capture the whole display: Press Shift-Command-3. The result includes the entire screen, not just the Safari page.
- Choose a window, region, or other capture setting: Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot controls. Select the screen, window, or portion option, then capture.
- Capture a selected area directly: Press Shift-Command-4, drag to select the portion, and release.
- Capture a window or menu: Press Shift-Command-4, then press Space. Click the window or menu. Hold Option while clicking to omit the window shadow.
Captures normally save to the desktop. To choose another destination, open Screenshot controls with Shift-Command-5, select Options, and change the save location. Some apps may prevent their windows from being captured.

If you need to preserve more than the visible screen, use Safari’s save formats. Neither format is an image screenshot.

- WIRELESS, RECHARGEABLE CONVENIENCE — Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad connects wirelessly to your Mac, iPad, or iPhone via Bluetooth. And the rechargeable internal battery means no loose batteries to replace.
- WORKS WITH MAC, IPAD, OR IPHONE — It pairs quickly with your device so you can get to work right away.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE — Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience. Its extended layout features document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys. The numeric keypad is ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
- In Safari, open the webpage and choose File > Save As.
- Choose Web Archive to save the page with its graphics. Links remain usable while their destination pages are still available.
- Choose Page Source if you need the HTML only.
- Save the file to your preferred location.
Safari may be unable to save some items that appear on a webpage. If the requirement is a long, scrollable image rather than an archive, the built-in screenshot steps above do not establish a whole-page image workflow.
What Shortcuts’ Safari JavaScript action does
Apple describes Run JavaScript on Webpage as a way to retrieve specific data from a website or modify webpage contents. Its documentation does not identify it as an action for capturing a rendered screenshot. Use Screenshot for images; use the JavaScript action for supported page automation.

Set up a Shortcut that runs JavaScript on the active Safari page
- In Shortcuts, create a shortcut and add the Run JavaScript on Webpage action (also described as running JavaScript on the active Safari tab).
- Enable Allow Running Scripts in Safari’s settings when prompted or required.
- Run the shortcut from Safari with an active webpage available as input.
- If the script returns data, call the completion handler as required by Apple’s action guidance. The JavaScript extension has a time limit, so keep work bounded.
This setup can extract or modify webpage content, but it does not turn the Shortcut into a documented screenshot tool. For exact behavior and compatibility, consult Apple’s Shortcuts for Mac user guide.

Screenshot controls and output can vary by macOS version and supported hardware. Apple also notes that some apps may prevent their windows from being captured. Check Apple’s current Take a screenshot on Mac instructions if controls or formats differ on your Mac.

Troubleshooting
- The shortcut cannot access a webpage: Run it from Safari while a webpage is active, and confirm the shortcut receives the Safari webpage as input.
- Safari blocks the script: Enable Allow Running Scripts in Safari settings, then try again.
- The JavaScript action times out: Apple documents a time limit for the extension. Reduce the amount of work or return only the data the shortcut needs.
- The screenshot contains only what is visible: That is the expected scope of the documented screen, window, and selected-area controls. Scroll and capture additional regions, or save a Web Archive if an image is not essential.
- A window or page item is missing: Some apps can prevent window capture, and Safari may be unable to save some visible webpage items. Try another supported capture scope or save format.
- You cannot find the image: Screenshots normally save to the desktop unless the destination was changed in Screenshot Options.
